Overview of Rome at sunset (source)
If you're thinking of having a quick trip to scratch that travel itch, a quick getaway could be just what you need. And if you're looking for a day trip, Rome could just be the ideal place. Rome wasn't built in one day, but you can certainly view a lot of it in 24 hours.
Italy is a country rich in history, art, and food, and the capital is a simply wonderful experience. If you plan wisely, you can create a Rome itinerary that covers all the main attractions.
Read on to see how you should spend one day in Rome.
The Colosseum with clouds in the background (source)
A good place to start. The Colosseum is the city's most popular tourist attraction, so you can bet that it'll fill up with visitors quickly throughout the day. You'll want to wake up extra early to ensure that you're there when the doors open and the crowds are still manageable.
It can be beneficial to stay in a nearby hotel, such as Imperial Rooms. It's only a 4-minute walk away from the Colosseum, so it'll be easy to head over as soon as you're ready.
You can either walk through the ancient amphitheatre on your own or book a guided tour to learn more about this amazing piece of architecture. Grabbing a "skip the line" ticket is a good idea as well, as you won't have to waste precious time queuing.
If you get done with the Colosseum early, then you can also visit the nearby Roman Forum. Walking through the plaza will show you the ruins of the Roman Empire.
Overview of the Palatine Hill on a beautiful day (source)
Whether or not you see the Roman Forum, the next stop in your late-morning itinerary is the Palatine Hill. The climb isn't too arduous, and the rewarding panoramic view at the top makes the physical activity well worth it.
In addition, near the hill there's the Piazza del Campidoglio, which is a stunning square designed by Michelangelo in the 16th century. In the centre is an equestrian statue of Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, although it's only a replica. Fun fact: the original is actually safeguarded in the nearby Capitoline Museums. Be sure to visit the statues of Dioscuri (Castor and Pollux) along the sides of the Cordonata.
When you're in the area, be sure to visit the architectural wonders of the Palazzo dei Conservatori, Palazzo Senatorio and Palazzo Nuovo.
If you want to rest up either before or after your visit to the Palatine Hill, then get yourself a room at Kolbe Hotel Rome. Its central location places you only 10 minutes away from Piazza del Campidoglio by foot.
The outside of a Roman trattoria (source)
When your stomach's rumbling, then it's time to go to a Roman trattoria. You can find these all over Rome, so it won't be difficult to taste some authentic local dishes.
Some classic menu items to try include pasta carbonara, cacio e pepe, and pizza Romana. If you're in a group, or you're travelling with your partner, then this is the perfect time to order one of everything to share!
If you aren't sure where to go, then booking a food tour can be a great idea. Experienced guides can take you to all the best spots, and they'll combine it with sightseeing too.
Overview of Vatican City during the day (source)
Once you've rested and digested your delicious lunch, you should head over to Vatican City, which is the smallest independent state in the world. There are numerous artistic and religious treasures waiting for you here.
Visit St. Peter's Basilica to see the largest church in the world where Saint Peter and other popes were buried. It has gorgeous Renaissance architecture and houses Michelangelo's famous La Pietà. Do note that there's a strict dress code to enter, so double-check it to ensure you won't be refused entry. In general, you'll probably want to cover up your shoulders and legs.
Then, check out the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel. The former has an extensive collection of art accumulated by the popes throughout the centuries, leaving you with many historical artefacts.
However, the real highlight is the Sistine Chapel, where you can gaze up at Michelangelo's incredible frescoes on the ceiling. Take in the Last Judgment, which will make your jaw drop in amazement.
The Pantheon's front (source)
The Pantheon is a can't-miss attraction for any Rome itinerary - but before you walk there, stroll through the Piazza Navona first. It's renowned for its 3 Baroque fountains and lively atmosphere that's sure to put a smile on any face. If you have time, consider touring the excavations below the piazza.
Soon, you'll reach the Pantheon, an exquisitely-preserved ancient Roman temple dedicated to the gods. This architectural masterpiece has one of the biggest domes in the world, and several kings of Italy are buried here.
Admission used to be free, but as of early July 2023, visitors must pay for an entrance ticket to go in. Also, the lines can be long, but generally, they move fast, so you won't have to wait long to get into the Pantheon. It is a place of worship though, so it may be occasionally shut to the general public.
The Trevi Fountain at night (source)
End the day by walking to the famous Trevi Fountain. It might seem like an odd choice to go in the evening rather than the daytime, but we have our reasons for suggesting a nighttime visit.
Not only is the crowd thinner, but the fountain appears more mystical too. It's beautifully lit to draw your eyes to the best parts of the fountain. Plus, the water looks otherworldly.
For good luck and to ensure you return to Rome in the future, toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain. The proper way to do this is to stand facing away from the fountain, then toss a coin with your right hand over your left shoulder into it.
After throwing in your lucky coin, head over to the Spanish Steps, a popular gathering spot with a beautiful staircase. It's a great place for people-watching if that's what you like. Then rest up in your bedroom at Royal Suite Trinità Dei Monti, that lies mere steps away.
