FAQ – Taking the Train from Hangzhou Stations

  • Which station should I use to go to Shanghai?

Use Hangzhou East Railway Station. It runs direct G‑trains every 10–20 minutes during the day. The journey takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour, and tickets start from 73 CNY (~£8). By far the most frequent and easiest connection from Hangzhou to Shanghai.
  • Which station should I use to go to Beijing?

Again, Hangzhou East is your best bet for fast daytime travel. Direct G‑trains take around 5½–6 hours, with tickets from 440 CNY (~£49).
If you prefer an overnight sleeper to save on accommodation, Hangzhou Central Station runs T/K‑category night trains that take about 14 hours.
  • Which station should I use to go to Chengdu or Xi’an?

Head to Hangzhou West Railway Station. It operates direct high‑speed G‑trains to Chengdu (~6½ hours) and Xi’an (~7½ hours). These routes are not available from Hangzhou East.
  • Can I buy train tickets without speaking Chinese?

Yes. Ticket counters at major Hangzhou stations have English‑speaking staff.
But the smoothest option is Trip.com – the app/website is fully in English (and other languages). You’ll get an e‑ticket linked directly to your passport, and at the station you simply scan your passport to board. No paper ticket, no phone calls, no language hassles.
  • Are the stations open overnight?

Hangzhou Central Station stays open all night to serve sleeper trains. Hangzhou East and Hangzhou West normally close after the last departure, around 23:00.
  • How do I get from Hangzhou East to West Lake?

Take Metro Line 1 to Longxiangqiao Station, then walk about 10 minutes. The whole trip takes roughly 25–30 minutes and costs around 4 CNY (~£0.45).
