Phuket is one of those destinations where your trip begins the moment you step off the plane, with that very special tropical warmth you feel as soon as you leave the terminal. With 17 million passengers in 2024, Phuket Airport (HKT) is Thailand's third-largest airport and welcomes almost all visitors to the island. It was modernised in 2016, is currently being expanded, and is located in the far north of the island, in Mai Khao.
Would you like to learn more about the airport, its terminals, transport links, and the services available on-site? Then you've come to the right place! ✈️
HKT Airport, operated by Airports of Thailand, is located in the north-west of the island right by the sea in Mai Khao. Its location has earned it a certain fame among photographers: from the nearby beach, you can photograph landing planes almost at sand level, an image that is widely shared on the internet.
Visitor numbers rose by 23% in 2024, driven by the return of Asian travellers and new long-haul connections. Over sixty airlines serve around eighty destinations from there.
The most important distances to keep in mind, as they will determine your entire journey:

What makes Phuket Airport special compared to other airports in the country? It has three terminals! You should definitely keep that in mind, as some travellers lose a lot of time on their departure day because they didn't check beforehand (especially with connecting flights). Here you'll find everything you need to know!
This is the newest terminal (opened in 2016) and by far the largest. Its opening relieved the pressure on the airport, which was previously bursting at the seams: before that, queues at security during peak season would stretch for dozens of metres!
Terminal 3 is the former international terminal, which was rebuilt and renovated after the opening of T2. The atmosphere here is calmer, but the volume of traffic remains high: the Phuket-Bangkok route is actually one of the busiest in the country.
The most unassuming terminal. It opened in February 2014 and only operates during peak season to handle the extra traffic from charter flights (European winter connections, seasonal Russian flights).
Unlike the other two terminals, it isn't located right next door: you'll need to take a free shuttle bus or allow about twenty minutes to walk there.

Thailand awaits you with fine sandy beaches, turquoise waters and brilliant sunshine. Click here to find out more about Trip.com's offers and plan your trip even more easily.
This is the real issue in Phuket, which is rarely addressed clearly enough on websites and in guidebooks: the airport is located a long way from the beach resorts. If your hotel is located on the beaches in the south, you should allow for at least 45 minutes of travel time, and sometimes significantly more depending on traffic conditions.

Thailand's entry requirements have changed twice in less than two years. Here, you'll find out what really applies today.
Important update: On 19 May 2026, the Thai Cabinet decided to end the 60-day exemption that had been in place since July 2024. The country is returning to a 30-day exemption for 54 nationalities, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and most EU countries. The regulation will come into effect 15 days after its publication in the Royal Gazette.
As of 1 May 2025, the old TM6 paper form has been replaced by the TDAC (Thailand Digital Arrival Card). It is mandatory for all foreign travellers.
HKT leaves almost nothing to be desired, and the selection in the international terminal is particularly impressive.
