Beach
Island/Peninsula
VALVClosest to Phuket is Racha Yai. The island is mostly inhabited by muslim farmers and fishermen. This island is also where all the accommodation is located. The main beach, on the island’s northwest coast, is Ao Tawan Tok (also known as Ao Bungalow), which is located in a u-shaped bay. The sand here is snow white and has the consistency of talcum powder. There are a few bungalow resorts and restaurants located here, including the 5-star The Racha.Like many islands in the area, Racha Yai is popular with day-trippers from Phuket and Ao Bungalow can get a little busy in the afternoons. However, at night the island is pretty quiet with only a few restaurants and bars. The lack of bright lights means that the night sky is light up with stars, great for stargazing on the beach.

For most people, New Years evokes memories of large celebrations. Perhaps it’s watching the ball drop in New York’s Times Square, perhaps it’s the fireworks from Sydney Harbour Bridge. In Thailand and other places throughout Southeast Asia, New Years is an excuse to have a massive water fight. Thailand’s traditional New Years festival, known as Songkran, is observed every year from April 13-15. To understand Songkran is to gain an appreciation of Thailand and Thai culture. In this travelogue, we explore the traditions around Songkran and delve into some recommendations for great places to participate in the festivities. Make sure you’ve got a change of clothes, because we’re going to get wet.

Phuket Travel Tips

About Phuket

The wide, beautiful beaches, white sands and emerald waters make Phuket the “Pearl” of the Andaman Sea. The zig-zagging west coast is dotted with three major beaches, Patong, Karon and Hat Kata, the main destinations for most tourists. The island is characterized by colorful entertainment experiences and rich nightlife. If partying isn’t quite your thing, you might choose to take a visit to Kamala Beach, famous for its cleanliness, or even Hat Surin for its privacy. An established tourist island, facilities and resorts are already quite developed, making this coastal village a delight to visitors both young and old.
