Let's start with the hotel's location, which is excellent. Turn right out of the hotel and you're on Central Street within 20 meters. Turn left and walk a few hundred meters to the popular Hongzhuan Morning Market. It's about 2 kilometers from St. Sophia Cathedral, the Flood Control Monument, the riverside cable car, and the cruise ship terminal, where you can take a boat to Sun Island. There are many old, highly-rated restaurants nearby; I highly recommend Lao Chu Fang (Old Kitchen) for its amazing dishes, and it's just dozens of meters from the hotel, making it very convenient.
The highlight, however, is the hotel itself, which is steeped in history. It's a protected cultural relic, a century-old mansion that seamlessly blends modern amenities with its historical charm. Staying here, you get to experience its rich past while enjoying contemporary comfort and convenience. This trip was a self-driving tour with four childhood friends and our mothers. The hotel's butler-style service made us feel right at home from arrival to check-out.
Given the hotel's prime location, parking is scarce and managed by the city with separate fees. I had informed the front desk beforehand that we were traveling with four elderly ladies. To my surprise, upon arrival, a helpful staff member (a handsome young man!) immediately assisted with our luggage, helped us check in, and escorted us to our rooms. Similarly, at check-out, they helped load our luggage into the car. The front desk staff (a lovely young lady) even arranged a parking spot for us in advance. Just wrapped up our stay at the Shangri-La Hotel, Harbin Songbei, and I have to say, the professionalism and warmth of the entire team left a lasting impression. I simply must share my genuine gratitude.
From the moment we arrived, the experience exceeded expectations. We got there a bit early, and Linda from the Executive Lounge, who was assisting at the front desk, along with her colleague Chris, quickly and enthusiastically processed our early check-in. Manager Ma even went above and beyond, kindly upgrading our room. This thoughtful 'welcome gift' made us feel incredibly valued.
The service at the Executive Lounge, in particular, was exemplary. At one point, I accidentally knocked over a glass, and Linda immediately came over, showing genuine concern for my well-being and handling the cleanup calmly and considerately. Later, when I needed an ice pack after laser treatment, a male colleague from the lounge proactively and swiftly brought me one, solving my immediate problem. On our departure day, we were unable to return on time due to business in the southern part of the city. Sunny and Daisy from the lounge were incredibly understanding and actively helped us arrange a late checkout. This level of flexibility and thoughtfulness, putting the guest's needs first, was truly moving.
Throughout our stay, we experienced not only high-standard facilities but also a well-trained, collaborative team. Getting straight to it, from check-in to check-out:
First off, the high-speed elevators are incredibly smooth, which is a huge plus. I timed it, and it took less than a minute to get from the underground parking to the 42nd floor. Since the lobby is on the 42nd floor, and you have to go through it to switch elevators to the guest rooms, having such efficient elevators for frequent use is really important.
Secondly, the Chinese restaurant has a pretty good selection of dishes, and the taste is quite good for a five-star Chinese restaurant. It leans a bit salty, which might be because of the colder northern climate needing stronger flavors. The dim sum, however, was just okay, and I hope they can improve it. The prices are relatively reasonable, and the staff at the Chinese restaurant are very professional and provide excellent service. It would be even better if it were on the 43rd floor instead of the 5th.
Now, about the room: The view from the scenic room is fantastic, the bedding is comfortable, and the wide sofa and double sinks are great for families. I just wish they'd add a spotlight near the entrance as it's a bit dark there.
In the evening, the executive lounge would be a perfect spot to watch the sunset and enjoy a drink. Unfortunately, I was with my kids, so I didn't get the chance, but I'll definitely go next time.
Finally, before checking out, I tried the hotel breakfast. It's quite interesting because it's open until 1 PM, which is incredibly thoughtful! The variety of dishes is also very rich.
Due to my travel plans, I only stayed one night, but if I have more time next time, I'll definitely bring my kids to stay for a few more days.From£64
