How to Get to Harbin: The Complete Guide

Dreaming of exploring Harbin and its legendary International Ice and Snow Festival? This city in northeast China, the capital of Heilongjiang, attracts millions of visitors every winter who are left spellbound by its monumental ice sculptures.

But how do you get there from the UK? Trip.com reveals all the options: connecting flights from London, connections via the hubs of Beijing and Shanghai, and most importantly, how to easily reach the unmissable Ice and Snow Festival once you arrive!

💡Fun fact: Harbin is nicknamed the "Moscow of the East" due to its Russian architecture and extreme winter temperatures, which can drop as low as -30°C!

How to Get to Harbin from the UK ✈️

How to get to Harbin from the UK?

Bad news for those of you in a hurry: no airlines currently offer direct flights between London and Harbin (or any other UK city). That’s right—the 8,200 km distance between the two cities means you’ll always need at least one stopover!

The main airlines flying this route include China Southern Airlines, China Eastern Airlines and Air China. These carriers typically offer stopovers in their respective hubs: Beijing, Shanghai, or sometimes Guangzhou (we’ll tell you more about that just below).

Connecting flights: fares and duration

Generally speaking, the total journey time is between 13 and 19 hours, depending on the length of your connection. Flights with a short 2 to 3-hour stopover in Beijing or Shanghai remain the fastest options.

As for the cost, you can expect to pay around £549 return in April, though prices can soar during the peak winter month of March when the ice festival is in full swing.

📌 Trip.com Top Tip: Book your tickets at least 3 months in advance to snag the best deals, especially if you're travelling between December and February for the festival. We recommend allowing for a layover of at least 2 hours 30 minutes to give yourself plenty of time for security checks and terminal transfers if needed.

How to Get to Harbin from Beijing 🚄

Beijing is the main hub for reaching Harbin from international destinations. You have two great options: catch a flight or take the high-speed train, which allows you to discover the stunning landscapes of Northeast China.

Option 1: Flying from Beijing (the fastest way)

Flights from Beijing to Harbin are frequent and plentiful, with departures from both of the capital's airports: Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) and the new Daxing Airport (PKX).

Here’s everything you need to know:

  • ✈️ Flight time: just 2h 30m
  • 📅 Frequency: more than ten direct flights every day
  • 💰 Prices: starting from around £60 one way
  • 🏆 Our recommended airline: China Southern Airlines (excellent punctuality)
Which airport should you choose? Daxing Airport (PKX), which opened in 2019, is located about 56 km from the centre of Beijing, roughly a 1 hour and 5-minute journey. If you're arriving on an international flight, be sure to check which airport your connecting flight departs from to avoid any nasty surprises.

Option 2: High-speed train (the authentic experience)

For those who prefer travelling overland and discovering the landscapes of Northeast China, the high-speed train is a fantastic alternative.

Here’s everything you need to know:

  • 🚄 Journey time: 4h 33m for the fastest trains (G901, G905, G909)
  • 📅 Frequency: 17 daily trains from Beijing to Harbin, and 18 in the opposite direction
  • Timings: departures from Beijing are between 08:00 and 16:05
  • 💰 Fares: 513-602 CNY (approx. £55–£65) for second class
  • 🚄 Departure stations from Beijing to Harbin: Beijing Railway Station, Beijing West Railway Station, and Beijing Chaoyang Railway Station.
  • 🚄 Your Harbin adventure begins at one of two main train stations! Trains will whisk you away to either Harbin Railway Station (the central hub) or Harbin West Railway Station. Just a heads-up, Harbin West is a touch further out from the bustling city centre.

This means super convenient transportation and a plethora of dining options. Staying at New Paris Hotel was a perfect experience [strong]! The location is absolutely fantastic, right by a subway station, making it super convenient to get to Central Street, nearby shopping areas, and really, anywhere you want to go 🚗. The hotel's decor is European retro, giving off a grand and elegant vibe, and the crystal chandeliers in the lobby create an amazing atmosphere [sun]. Our room was clean and spacious. The buffet restaurant had a rich variety of options, from barbecue and seafood to crayfish – it felt like a feast 🦞. Plus, there were plenty of desserts, all fresh and delicious, and the dining environment was very comfortable 🍰. The service was thoughtful and attentive. It truly was a one-stop, worry-free experience for travel, dining, and accommodation. This is definitely my top choice for staying in Harbin!

This hotel, over a century old, boasts a rich historical ambiance with its Tsarist Russian court design. The lobby is resplendent and dazzling, featuring crystal chandeliers, oil paintings, wine cabinets, and an ornate wrought-iron garden, all showcasing the luxury of the Russian aristocracy. I even donned a 19th-century outfit to experience what it felt like to be a Countess. The hotel service was impeccable. Upon check-in, someone immediately guided us on a tour and provided explanations, including a ride in the century-old elevator. Our luggage was delivered directly to our room, and they were incredibly accommodating, helping us take photos in the court costumes without any hesitation. When we checked out, they even brought our bags to the car – truly doorstep service, highly commendable! This is a highly recommended hotel that is well worth experiencing.

Whether it's an emergency requiring immediate attention or accompanying a friend or family member for check-ups and treatments, it saves a significant amount of travel time and cost, making it convenient and efficient. Choosing the right hotel for this Harbin trip was absolutely crucial! I'm definitely giving a five-star rating to the Atour Hotel (Bingxue Big World Longchuan Road Metro Station). The room experience was fantastic! Cleanliness and tidiness are a given, and the bedding was so soft and comfortable; sleeping on it was incredibly restorative. After a long day of exploring, just lying down felt incredibly therapeutic. Additionally, the hotel's public areas are very stylishly designed. The lobby's book bar is perfect for reading and relaxing, and there's a laundry room and gym, all fully equipped – the attention to detail is truly impressive. This stay far exceeded my expectations; I couldn't find a single fault with the location, service, or room quality! Next time I'm in Harbin, I'll definitely choose this Atour again. Excellent location! Just a 5-minute walk to the nearby pedestrian street, and easy to get anywhere by taxi. It's 15 minutes to Central Street, 15 minutes to Saint Sophia Cathedral, 15 minutes to Zhonghua Baroque, 25 minutes to the Siberian Tiger Park, and 40 minutes to Volga Manor. Basically, all the tourist hotspots are nearby, and yet it's still quiet despite being centrally located. Metro Line 2 can take you everywhere, including Sun Island! Outstanding service! 'Lucky,' the Housekeeping Manager, is an absolute gem. She confirmed our arrival a day in advance, and she even sorted out my double booking, which was my own mistake – she's amazing, so kind and professional! And 'Xuemei' from the Housekeeping Department is also fantastic; her warm and enthusiastic service made us out-of-towners feel completely at ease and comfortable. We stayed for 8 days and 7 nights and didn't want to leave. We'll definitely come back to this place next time, it's brilliant! My beloved gym is also really well-equipped, with all the basic machines for both cardio and strength training! Delicious and varied breakfast! Freshly made wontons, a mix of Chinese and Western dishes; breakfast starts at 6:30 AM. We ate it for several days and never got bored, it was so good! Especially the lady who blanched vegetables for me, haha, she catered perfectly to my lighter Southern palate. ❤️ And the chubby, adorable young lady who checked our room numbers every morning at breakfast was so warm and comforting! Great value for money! In the off-season, it's 400+ RMB, and during peak season, it's 600-800 RMB. For this level of service and facilities, it feels like staying in an international chain hotel for the price of a guesthouse.

My stay was great! The hotel was clean and tidy overall, and the lobby was grand. The room was meticulously cleaned, no weird smells or unhygienic spots. It had smart controls, which were easy to use. The mattress was just right, not too soft or too firm, and the duvet was soft and skin-friendly, making for a very comfortable sleep. Seine House was a warm and comfortable place to stay, especially after being out in the cold. The staff were very helpful and genuinely friendly, and they went out of their way to prepare a vegetarian breakfast for us, which was much appreciated. The rooms have a European Russian style decor with solid wooden furniture, giving the space a classic and cosy feel. The rooms were very clean with no noticeable dust, which made the stay even more comfortable. They are spacious, well heated, and felt like a real relief after long days outdoors. The bed was comfortable, there was a bathtub, and a humidifier was provided, which really helped with Harbin’s dry winter air. The overall atmosphere is homey rather than hotel like. The location is very convenient, close to Central Street (Zhongyang Street) and Zhongshan Street, and also near the cable car that crosses the Songhua River to Sun Island. It is worth noting that the hotel is officially non smoking throughout, but some guests did not follow the rules, and the smell occasionally drifted into the corridors and rooms. This was not due to the hotel’s policy, but rather guest behaviour. Overall, Seine House offers spacious, clean rooms, thoughtful service, and a warm, character filled stay in a good Harbin location, with only minor discomfort caused by guests not observing the non smoking rules.

Honestly, I'm a bit reluctant to give a good review because the Executive Lounge here is just so subpar right now. And the loud noise in the morning was really annoying, though the duty manager did apologize and offered juice, a small gift, and a cute little tiger plushie, so I guess I'll let it go. Maybe it's the off-season, or they're cutting costs and boosting efficiency. But frankly, the Executive Lounge in Shenyang, also in the Northeast, was much better. The ground floor greeter was very friendly and proactively helped with my luggage. The breakfast was excellent, offering Evenki milk tea and freshly made dumplings, a better experience than what I had at the Ritz-Carlton Fuli. The hotel lobby is on the 42nd floor, so you have to transfer elevators at the 42nd floor to get to and from the rooms.
