How to Get to Great Wall of China from Beijing

The Great Wall of China is undoubtedly the must-do activity on any trip to Beijing. Every year, millions of visitors flock to this wonder of the world, which stretches for over 21,000 km across northern China.

The good news? Getting to the Great Wall has never been easier! High-speed trains, budget-friendly public buses, comfortable tourist shuttles, or private cars... there are plenty of options, and each has its own advantages depending on your budget, time, and travel style!

In this comprehensive guide, Trip.com brings you the best ways to travel between Beijing and the main sections of the Great Wall (Badaling and Mutianyu), with all the practical info you need for an easy comparison: prices, journey times, departure points, pros and cons!

Which Great Wall Section Should You Visit from Beijing?

Before we talk about transport, you first need to decide which section to visit – because, let’s face it, the Great Wall is absolutely massive! Beijing gives you access to several different sections, each with its own unique character and specific transport options.

Badaling: the most accessible, but also the most touristy

Badaling: the most accessible, but also the most touristy

Badaling is undoubtedly the most famous section of the Great Wall. Here’s a summary of everything you need to know:

  • Distance from Beijing: 70 km (1–1.5 hours)
  • Difficulty level: Easy
  • Crowd levels: Very high

Badaling is the most visited section of the Great Wall. Perfectly restored and equipped with all the modern amenities you could need (including cable cars, toilets, and restaurants), it’s easily accessible by high-speed train in just 20–30 minutes.

The only downside? The crowds, particularly at weekends and during Chinese public holidays.

Mutianyu: fewer crowds and even better scenery

Mutianyu: fewer crowds and even better scenery

Here’s a quick summary of what you need to know about Mutianyu:

  • Distance from Beijing: 73 km (1.5-2 hours)
  • Difficulty level: Moderate
  • Crowd levels: Moderate to high

Mutianyu is often considered the best section for international visitors. Beautifully restored and offering breathtaking views, it’s less crowded than Badaling and features a star attraction: a 1.5 km toboggan ride down! It’s our number one recommendation if you have the time.

The Other, Less-Trodden Sections

  • Juyongguan (50 km): a historic fortress with easy access, perfect for avoiding the crowds.
  • Simatai (120 km): the only section open at night with stunning illuminations
  • Jinshanling (130 km): a hiker's paradise, wild section

Facilities: European-style architecture, very upscale. Hygiene: Quite good. Ambiance: The aromatherapy was very pleasant. Service: Excellent and professional. Especially at night, under the lights, it truly felt like a castle. Enjoying breakfast outdoors in the European-style courtyard was delightful. The nearby Hongxing Hutong and Zhihua Temple are great for a city walk, and it's a short bike ride to Yonghe Temple. You can also experience the delicious food of Guijie within 20 minutes. Every year, I visit Universal Studios in Beijing, and the year before last, I accidentally stayed at the Sofitel. I added Leo on WeChat because of an issue I had, and ever since, I contact him in advance to help arrange our stays. This year was no different, and everything was perfectly arranged again. It's now our go-to hotel in Beijing. The rooms are spacious enough for a family without feeling cramped. The only minor downside is the lack of a screen mirroring option, which isn't very convenient, but everything else is excellent. Plus, the subway is just a few minutes' walk away!

My stay was absolutely fantastic, truly living up to five-star hotel standards! The Millennium Hotel Beijing boasts a incredibly convenient location with excellent transport links nearby, making it perfect for both business trips and leisure travel. The hotel's overall ambiance is upscale and grand, with a modern and elegant lobby design. My room was spacious and spotless, the bedding was comfortable, and the soundproofing was excellent, ensuring a very restful stay. What truly stood out was the exceptional service from the hotel staff. From the friendly and efficient front desk during check-in to the attentive room service, everyone was professional, warm, and meticulous, making me feel right at home. The breakfast spread was extensive, offering a wide variety of both Western and Chinese options, all of excellent quality. The gym and pool were also very well-maintained, highlighting the hotel's complete and top-notch facilities. This stay truly exceeded my expectations; both the amenities and service demonstrated international five-star hotel standards. I will definitely choose to stay here again on my next visit to Beijing and will highly recommend it to friends and colleagues!

We stayed here during the May Day holiday, and it was quite busy. There was a minor hiccup initially: I had requested a room with a good view when booking, but upon arrival, the designated 13th-floor room with a view wasn't ready. They offered a 11th-floor room with a fire door instead. The front desk staff was very accommodating, saying I could change rooms anytime if I wasn't satisfied. The 11th-floor room did offer a view of the CCTV Tower, but having an internal door made me feel a bit uneasy, so I asked to switch again. They then arranged a quiet room on the 19th floor. The staff throughout this process were incredibly friendly, and their service was prompt and excellent. The room itself was simply decorated but had great facilities, and the water pressure was strong. Even with the May Day crowds, food deliveries were quite timely. The only downside was the exorbitant parking fee. It's 10 yuan an hour for underground parking with no cap. After one night, my parking bill came to 225 yuan. Compared to the room rate of over a thousand, the parking fee was quite painful. Those who need parking should be prepared!

After comparing several hotels for our family trip to Beijing, we finally settled on the Xinqiao Hotel, and it made our entire trip comfortable and hassle-free – a solid five-star rating! 📍The location is absolutely fantastic. Right outside, you'll find Chongwenmen Subway Station for lines 2 and 5. It's just a 10-15 minute walk to Tiananmen Square, Wangfujing, and Qianmen, and only a few subway stops to the Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven. The surrounding New World and Guorui malls offer plenty of dining and shopping options. Plus, it's very close to Beijing Railway Station, making travel incredibly convenient, especially when traveling with kids. 🛁The room was full of pleasant surprises. The entire room features natural hot spring water drawn from a thousand meters underground, so all the water for washing is natural spring water, making showers wonderfully relaxing. The room was impeccably clean, the bedding was soft and dry, and the mattress was just the right firmness. It was quiet and peaceful at night. We stayed in a family duplex suite, which had two floors and two bathrooms, offering ample space – perfect for a family of three. The amenities were complete, and they even thoughtfully provided children's toiletries and slippers. The attention to detail was exceptional.

It offers instant access to the subway, with Line 1 providing direct routes to Universal Studios and Xidan. Popular spots like Nanluoguxiang and the Temple of Heaven are just two subway stops away, making city-wide travel incredibly convenient. Tiananmen Square and the Meridian Gate of the Forbidden City are a mere 10-15 minute walk, meaning you can catch the flag-raising ceremony without the hassle of a taxi or traffic. This is my second trip to Beijing this year, and I chose to stay at the Livefor hotel in Chongwenmen again with my son. I guess that makes me a repeat customer, right? 😁 Overall, I'm quite satisfied. The location is super convenient, just a few minutes' walk from Chongwenmen subway station, making getting around incredibly easy. There are malls right downstairs and across the street, so with a child, I don't have to venture far. Cleanliness is my top priority when choosing a hotel, which is why I've picked Livefor twice. Next up is the bedding, especially the pillows – they're just the right firmness, ensuring a really comfortable sleep. The soundproofing is also good; once the window is closed, you can't hear any outside noise, and it's very quiet at night. My son loved the mini-fridge in the room; he bought some drinks and cheese, and he really enjoyed that. The service was also excellent and thoughtful. Check-in was quick, the staff were friendly and gentle, and they were always ready to help with any issues. All in all, the transportation, accommodation, and dining experiences were all great, offering good value for money. I'll definitely prioritize staying here again on my next visit to Beijing.

While there was an initial misunderstanding due to a hygiene concern which caused distress on our first night stay that I had to escalate the matter through Trip.com, the hotel manager turned the experience around. The night before check-out, we had a genuine and positive conversation at the lobby. She was humble and openly acknowledged her shortcomings and appreciated for helping her learn and grow as a leader. Good to know that a manager willing to take accountability and desire to improve. Every hotel staff we have interacted with are professional and friendly. Aside from the good service recovery, we loved the hotel's convenience: 1. The hotel is perfectly located within walking distance to Wangfujing Pedestrian Street (shopping and food). 3. The fun robot that delivers food right to our doorstep! The concierge staff were very prompt and welcoming, opening car doors and guiding guests to the front desk. The front desk staff were also very friendly. The hotel breakfast offered a wide variety of options. The lobby bar had excellent value for money for lunch, and there was live music in the evenings. The fitness center is open 24 hours (after 11 PM, you access it by swiping your room card). The gym space is huge, with a full range of equipment and daily group classes. My first time here was over 10 years ago for a company meeting, and I stayed in the bamboo house then. Unfortunately, I was too busy with work those two days and didn't get a chance to truly appreciate the scenery. After that, I only stopped by once for a meal in passing. This time, my experience was excellent. I really felt that this is a great place to completely unwind and escape the hustle and bustle, while still being not too far from the city center. The only minor downsides were that the facilities are a bit old, and it would have been perfect if the windows were cleaned more thoroughly. Also, the wild Great Wall that used to be accessible for climbing is now closed, which was a slight disappointment. But overall, these points are negligible. Finally, a big thank you to Olivier, Manager Wang Yuanyuan, and their colleagues for their warm hospitality and thoughtful care, which made our two days here wonderful and unforgettable.
