How to Get to Great Wall of China from Beijing

The Great Wall of China is undoubtedly the must-do activity on any trip to Beijing. Every year, millions of visitors flock to this wonder of the world, which stretches for over 21,000 km across northern China.

The good news? Getting to the Great Wall has never been easier! High-speed trains, budget-friendly public buses, comfortable tourist shuttles, or private cars... there are plenty of options, and each has its own advantages depending on your budget, time, and travel style!

In this comprehensive guide, Trip.com brings you the best ways to travel between Beijing and the main sections of the Great Wall (Badaling and Mutianyu), with all the practical info you need for an easy comparison: prices, journey times, departure points, pros and cons!

Which Great Wall Section Should You Visit from Beijing?

Before we talk about transport, you first need to decide which section to visit – because, let’s face it, the Great Wall is absolutely massive! Beijing gives you access to several different sections, each with its own unique character and specific transport options.

Badaling: the most accessible, but also the most touristy

Badaling: the most accessible, but also the most touristy

Badaling is undoubtedly the most famous section of the Great Wall. Here’s a summary of everything you need to know:

  • Distance from Beijing: 70 km (1–1.5 hours)
  • Difficulty level: Easy
  • Crowd levels: Very high

Badaling is the most visited section of the Great Wall. Perfectly restored and equipped with all the modern amenities you could need (including cable cars, toilets, and restaurants), it’s easily accessible by high-speed train in just 20–30 minutes.

The only downside? The crowds, particularly at weekends and during Chinese public holidays.

Mutianyu: fewer crowds and even better scenery

Mutianyu: fewer crowds and even better scenery

Here’s a quick summary of what you need to know about Mutianyu:

  • Distance from Beijing: 73 km (1.5-2 hours)
  • Difficulty level: Moderate
  • Crowd levels: Moderate to high

Mutianyu is often considered the best section for international visitors. Beautifully restored and offering breathtaking views, it’s less crowded than Badaling and features a star attraction: a 1.5 km toboggan ride down! It’s our number one recommendation if you have the time.

The Other, Less-Trodden Sections

  • Juyongguan (50 km): a historic fortress with easy access, perfect for avoiding the crowds.
  • Simatai (120 km): the only section open at night with stunning illuminations
  • Jinshanling (130 km): a hiker's paradise, wild section

My friend was visiting China and I booked this hotel for them in Beijing. The location is excellent, very convenient for transport, and the service was attentive. Wangfujing Pedestrian Street is just a few steps away, and it's also very close to attractions like Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. There are all sorts of restaurants in the area. Overall, it was a fantastic experience.

Destin's service was friendly and responsive to our needs. The room had good natural light, was quiet, and allowed for excellent rest. The location was superb, making getting around hassle-free. It was a very pleasant stay and definitely deserves a five-star recommendation!

I stayed at the Grand Millennium Beijing for two weeks, and overall, it was decent. The only standout positive was the two housekeeping ladies; they were absolutely amazing. For the last eleven days of my stay, 'Zhao Juanjuan' was my attendant, and she was incredibly thorough and attentive. She folded my clothes neatly every time. She remembered all my habits and room preferences, diligently helping me each day with my requests. She even helped air out cigarette smells, opened and closed windows according to my schedule, dealt with strange odors from the bathroom drain, and scrubbed the bathtub daily. Basically, she was always responsive to my needs, incredibly kind, and always enthusiastic to help. If I ever return to the Grand Millennium Beijing, I'd specifically want to stay on the floor she services. However, the hotel's policy on food delivery was frustrating. They wouldn't allow any deliveries to be left at the concierge, not even non-food items. It was really annoying. They only permit deliveries to be left in outdoor lockers, which means in winter, all your food gets cold. What's more, they have staff dedicated solely to pressing elevator buttons, so why can't they assign someone to bring deliveries up? There are no robots either, which was a real pain. I put up with it because I could see the 'Big Trousers' (CCTV Headquarters) from the lobby downstairs. Also, there was a persistent cigarette smell throughout the room, even in the bathroom. Another issue is that the hotel's decor is quite dated. There was a sewage-like smell from the sink, which made me want to gag while brushing my teeth in the morning. Everything else was fine. If you're looking for a newer hotel at a similar price, you could try the NUO Hotel Beijing or the Jing Guang Centre Hotel. But if you want to stay near the 'Big Trousers,' then the Millennium or Rosewood are your best bets.

Hotel Jen Beijing has been my top choice since 2019; whenever I visit Beijing, I only stay here. The rooms are clean and bright, and the floor-to-ceiling windows offer fantastic views—one side showcasing the dazzling lights of Jianguo Road Bridge, and the other, the CCTV Tower, creating an amazing ambiance at night. The sofa bed is perfect for guests with children, and the staff are warm, energetic, and provide thoughtful, attentive service. The location is superb, with direct access to China World Mall, making dining, shopping, and entertainment incredibly convenient. It's also super easy to get to the China World Summit Wing Observation Deck for night views. I always feel safe and comfortable here, and I'll continue choosing this hotel in the future.

Capital Hotel is located in a central area, making it easy to walk or take a taxi to various attractions. It's about 1 km to popular spots like Wangfujing. The subway station is a bit further, which can be a trek if you're hauling luggage. The room itself is very spacious, probably over 40 square meters, with an entryway that includes a small seating area. Beyond a dividing wall, there's a wardrobe and a bathroom with a bathtub. The layout is a little different from typical hotels, but the view is excellent – you can even see the Great Hall of the People from the room. The underfloor heating was quite warm at night. The hotel also boasts a beautiful long corridor and trees, with floor-to-ceiling windows offering fantastic views. Check-in service at the front desk was excellent; they provided detailed information about the hotel's amenities and activities. The luggage storage service was very responsible, noting down the number of items and contact person. Overall, a fantastic experience.

The location is excellent, very close to the subway station. The service was attentive, and the hygiene was good – everything was clean and tidy, even if the facilities weren't brand new. However, for a hotel costing 900 yuan a night, the breakfast was incredibly cheap. Out of four hot dishes, three were instant sausages, and there was even spoiled cold mixed tofu skin (fuzhu) – the top layer was dried out and discolored, looking like it had been sitting there for days. Because of the great location, I stayed for six days, but from the second day onwards, I ordered breakfast delivery. I'd bring my takeout to the restaurant just to have some of their plain congee, which unfortunately lacked century egg and lean pork, despite being labeled as 'century egg and lean pork congee.' The buns in the picture are from my delivery.

This hotel's location is absolutely fantastic! You can walk to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, and Wangfujing shopping area is right outside the door, making it incredibly convenient for getting around, shopping, and sightseeing. The room's cleanliness was exceptional; it was spotless, pristine, and the bedding was soft and comfortable. The bathroom was fresh and odor-free, showing great attention to detail – a truly reassuring and comfortable stay. The breakfast selection was rich and varied, offering a full range of Chinese and Western hot dishes, pastries, fruits, and drinks. The ingredients were fresh, and the flavors were delicious, ensuring a satisfying start to each day. The front desk staff were warm and attentive, making check-in and check-out efficient and quick. The hotel environment is quiet with excellent soundproofing, providing a peaceful retreat amidst the bustling city. The overall living experience was superb. Upon check-out, they even thoughtfully prepared a souvenir, adding a nice touch and showing genuine hospitality. The value for money is outstanding. I stumbled upon this hotel and ended up staying for eight nights. The longer I stayed, the more I felt like I'd discovered a hidden gem. The rooms are spacious with floor-to-ceiling windows offering great views. But the absolute best part is the hotel's fantastic location! It's only about 100 meters from both Line 2 and Line 5 subway stations, and within 100 meters, there are three shopping malls. This makes it incredibly convenient for dining, buying fruit, shopping, and even enjoying Peking duck. The hotel service is also excellent. They have a dedicated delivery table in the lobby with staff specifically assigned to watch over food deliveries to prevent loss or mix-ups. On my last day, even after checking out, I was resting in the lobby, and a staff member brought me hot water – I was truly touched.

I booked this as a Novotel, but before check-in, I was told it had changed names. This might indicate some issues – perhaps the hotel didn't meet Novotel's standards. The hotel is quite old but well-maintained, with no obvious problems. The outdated design itself isn't a huge deal, but I genuinely can't understand the bathroom door's design – the handle pinches your hand, and the door doesn't close securely. For the price, the location is quite good. Within a few hundred meters' walk, you'll find Dengshikou Subway Station (Line 5) and Jinyukou Station (Line 8). Wangfujing Pedestrian Street is about a 15-minute walk away. I didn't use the hotel's breakfast. There are plenty of breakfast options on the way to Dengshikou Subway Station.

The front desk service was excellent. They cleaned the rooms daily at a set time and thoughtfully provided children's toothbrushes and slippers for our kids. We booked two rooms, and after a prior request, they arranged for them to be next to each other. The central air conditioning provided powerful heating, and each room was equipped with a humidifier. I'd recommend bringing short-sleeved shirts if you're visiting soon. There's a bus stop just 300 meters away; you don't always have to take the subway in Beijing, the bus is a great option too!

Overall, a good hotel when it comes to location, general cleanliness, and soundproofing, but not really friendly towards foreigners. The staff at the front desk really need to improve their service and attitude, they were quite unapproachable and unfriendly. They also didn’t provide clear instructions during check-in. Nothing on how to access amenities for example. Also, when I tried getting the late-night snack, they were just ignoring me on their phones. It’s only when another local guest indicated they should serve me first that they finally took notice. I felt uncomfortable approaching them with questions after my first encounter with them. The only time they suddenly cared was during check-out when they tried to pressure me into leaving a 5 star review on the spot while they watched. It would be better if they just gently remind people to leave a review if they wish to. For breakfast, there were lots of options but they should really label things and clearly indicate dietary restrictions like meat or allergens. It seems like this is not a thing in China but if you are catering towards foreigners, not everyone can just eat anything. Lastly, for anyone who is really sensitive to smoke, I asked for a smoke-free room but could still smell it, especially in the shower. Not sure if the smell is coming through from other rooms, but either way you will catch a whiff.

Had a slight hiccup before check-in, but everything was resolved smoothly. Qiqi's service was excellent. The room wasn't huge, but thankfully it was clean and odor-free. After reading other reviews, I decided not to take the shuttle. It's not far from the subway station, and it's only three stops to Universal Studios by metro. The room was great, with beautiful views, and room service was also good. However, when I asked the front desk about the children's activities during Chinese New Year, they told me to ask the restaurant. The restaurant said they weren't sure either. For the sushi-making activity for kids, we were told during the sachet-making activity in the afternoon that we could join in the evening. But when we went to join later, they said we had to dine at the restaurant to participate. In the end, after staff went back and forth, we were finally allowed to join – it was quite chaotic. Neither the restaurant nor the room was warm; the air conditioning didn't help. Only after staff brought a space heater did the room warm up a bit. Overall, the service feels incomplete and needs improvement.

FAQ - Get to to Great Wall of China from Beijing

  • When should I book train tickets to the Great Wall?

It’s best to book in advance—especially during Chinese public holidays (Chinese New Year, Golden Week 1–7 October) or weekends. You can easily reserve tickets on Trip.com up to 30 days ahead.
  • Badaling or Mutianyu: which Great Wall section should I choose?

Badaling is the easiest to reach (just 20–30 minutes by train) but tends to be crowded. Mutianyu offers better scenery, fewer crowds, and even a fun toboggan ride—it’s our top recommendation. Short on time? Go with Badaling. Have a full day? Mutianyu’s well worth it.
  • What’s the cheapest way to get to the Great Wall from Beijing?

Bus 877 to Badaling is the most budget-friendly (70p–£1.15), but it’s slow and often packed. For Mutianyu, take public bus 916 + H23—it costs just £1.75–£2.20 but takes around 3 hours. For the best value, the high-speed train to Badaling (£1.75–£3.50) is hard to beat.
  • What’s the most comfortable option?

A private transfer is the ultimate in comfort (door-to-door, Wi-Fi, luggage space), but it’s also the priciest (£100–£166 return). For a good balance of comfort and cost, the high-speed train to Badaling or a tourist bus to Mutianyu are both solid choices.
  • Can you visit the Great Wall in winter?

Absolutely! Winter (December to February) means far fewer visitors and stunning snowy landscapes. Just wrap up warm (temperatures can drop to -10°C) and wear non-slip shoes—the steps can get icy.
