My wife and I booked a table for evening dining last week. We used to live the in the village around 10 years ago but never got around to dining here. We now live nearly an hours drive away but decided to take the trip anyway as we love our good food. My wife made the booking via email which was as simple as agreeing a time and informing of how many people for. It’s a lovely building tucked back off of the main road, parking was a little tricky as spaces are limited and shared between diners and people staying. The staff on arrival were great and explained that the lounge was full as asked if we would mind going straight to our table, which wasn’t a problem. We were there for 3 courses but received some tasty nibbles when we sat down and a lovely taster to start. The chef clearly knows their food. The only issue we had was when we came to order. The main section on the menu had no vegetarian option at all. This is very strange and something I’ve never seen lacking on any menu. When the waitress, a lady we hadn’t seen already that evening, came to our table to take our order, we asked what the veggie option was. We were met with a confused look and was informed that any dietary requirements should have been made clear when making our booked. We informed the waitress that this was not made clear to us when booking and that being vegetarian is not a dietary requirement. Also, written at the bottom of the menu it said, “please let your waitress know of any dietary requirements”, so clearly this could be made known at the time. It was very unprofessional to blame the customer for this, but I will give the waitress the benefit of the doubt because she did do her best to see what alternative she could arrange for my wife. The dish my wife received in the end, although a plate of sides, was very tasty and was like a plater. Again, the chef clearly knows their food. It’s a real shame that a veggie option is not always on the menu as the food was really good, and for this reason we sadly won’t be returning. I would however, encourage anyone who eats meat and fish to try this place for food at it was lovely and good value.

A warm welcome from Richard on arrival followed by a slice of home made cake , a real nice touch, the double room we stayed in was very comfortable and well equipped. The staff are a credit to the hotel and cannot do to much for you and make you very welcome at all times. We have saved the food until last as this was definitely our highlight due to the high end quality , we both loved it

Recommended by a friend who lives locally. Very warm professional welcome on arrival. Called before we arrived to see if we wanted to book for dinner. We had Room 26 at the top which was massive! It was very clean, very comfortable, warm, nice blend of modern with character and some great in room touches (tea, coffee, bottled water in reusable water bottle, fruit and some biscuits and flapjacks too!) Kettle, TV and stereo. I professionally environmentally audit accommodation, so I spotted a couple of very minor maintenance issues and improvements (e.g. bathroom got very steamy due to extractor fan grate needing cleaning!) which the owners took as feedback with great grace to improve with housekeeping for the next guests. The breakfast was truly amazing, freshly cooked and extremely tasty; with a comfortable and welcoming dining room. You choose the night before by ticking on a menu. Car parking was plentiful. Would we stay again? Without hesitation, and so should you too if you’re in the area! Well done to the Plantation House team, I hope it’s a great year for you all.

I usually seek out a rural-ish hotel, in a village or small town with plenty to see within walking distance. This however is another, like the Brace of Pheasants in Dorset that stands alone. There is a pub or two further in the village and some sort of store, none of which I saw. Having just had the Scandi break at Christmas, rural seemed like a good idea for a weekend mid-way between two overseas adventures. We were swayed by the tiny Plantation Hotel and its promised luxury. After all, a hotel with White Company toiletries has to deliver comfort - although I’m slightly put off by the name. The room oozed boutique country with Georgian windows framed by trees and two small armchairs placed looking out. On the lux side, we are promised underfloor heating in the bathroom, which is definitely needed. It wasn’t on though. I expected everything to be comfortable as soon as we walked in. Maybe it’s a sign of the times so no energy is wasted. After all, the quality service was evident as soon as we walked in and we discovered they had booked us a single occupancy room. When we walked upstairs, we find the room to be decent sized and before we had a chance to open the wardrobe, someone was up re-laying the coffee table for two and bringing in the extra towels and robes. No slippers but the bedroom part is carpeted and I remembered to bring some. Sadly none of these items are as super luxurious as the White Company but are good. Our confirmation says 2 so we are surprised to see a bill for a double occupancy surcharge at the end of our stay. We decided to pay and argue later and got it back from ********** immediately. It took effort to work out how to warm up the bathroom from its frozen state. Another thing you never see these days is a little card with instructions on how everything works. We found the switches for the towel rail and heating down at the skirting board level. The radiator in the room only seemed to come on in the evening so we didn’t have control of that but managed to keep warm in early February, mainly by spending most of our days out. So once everything is working, the bathroom has everything; a deep long bathtub with taps in the middle, rather than 1 so you have to turn them both just right for a warm bath. Curiously there is no overflow which strikes me as a bit dangerous! Overhead there’s an excellent detachable shower overhead (unused except to rinse the bath), a heated towel rail, a decent round sink with space around and underneath for a small number of toiletries. The tap was quite far for me to reach but other rooms may differ. The room has 2 bath towels, 2 hand towels, 2 face towels and a much-needed bath mat for the yet-to-be-warmed floor. The two robes hang here too along with two glasses. Vanities include cotton buds, cotton wool, shower cap, and the little White Company toiletries, shower gels, and conditioner. The shampoo, body lotion and liquid soap are attached to the wall, along with another shower gel.

Best hotel by far, has a colonial feel, personal service was excellent. Although an excellent evening meal 3 courses for £46 may be a surprise.

We live locally, but had never dined at The Plantation House so thought we’d give it a go. Where do I start? The lady working front of house (sorry, I wish I had asked your name), greeted us, took our coats and escorted us through to the lounge. She could not have been more pleasant or efficient. I used to manage a similar establishment and know the value of such an outstanding staff member. The lounge was sophisticated and elegant but still cosy. We were then shown through to a small restaurant, perfect in size. The food came out at the right speed and was very good. The service throughout was faultless. I look forward to our next visit.
