Top 10 things to do in Athens

Few cities in the world can offer historical heritage - not to mention romance - in quite the same way as Athens. This city is practically an open-air museum, every step offering spectacular insights of the great civilizations that inhabited these lands thousands of years ago. If you like ancient history and classical art - not to mention Mediterranean hospitality - spending your holidays in the Greek capital is one of the best decisions you can make. Book yourflights to Athensand hotel as soon as possible, where you will have the opportunity to enjoy these top 10 superb things to do in Athens, Greece (if we do say so ourselves).

1. Acropolis

Whatever you do on your Greek vacation, you can't go home without visiting this iconic landmark that stands tall among the rolling hills of Athens - the Acropolis will allow you to truly experience the greatness of the Greco-Roman world. Although the Parthenon is one of the most famous monuments, it is only one of the long lists of temples, sanctuaries and theatres that nestle within this site of historical wonder. Keen archeology fans will also get to see the 2000-year-old Odeon of Herodes Atticus and the breath-taking Porch of the Caryatids.

2. The Hymettus Mountains

Fancy escaping the busy streets of Athens? Head to the eastern border of the city, where you can lose yourself in a stunning natural backdrop that is the Hymettus Mountain range. If you want to do a bit of exercise, the winding 16 km-long range is the ideal place to go for a leisurely hike or practice climbing - proof that you can both go on vacation and keep fit.

Stop to drink in the Athens scenery from its viewpoints and discovering hidden gems such as the Kaisariani Monastery, a small sanctuary with some truly spectacular frescoes in the middle of the forest.

3. Philopappos Monument

One of the wonderful peculiarities of Athens is that it has several hills distributed in different parts of the city from which you will have impressive panoramic views. In addition to climbing Mount Lycabettus and the sacred mount of the Acropolis, the Philopappos Monument, atop Mouseion Hill, is well worth a leisurely walk - not only for its views, but for all the monuments it can boast. Don’t be in a hurry to reach the top, because as well as the monument itself you can visit the 12th century church of Agios Dimitrios Loumbardiaris, and the so-called Prison of Socrates - a kind of mysterious cave with various theories about its origin (but did it really house the famous philosopher?).

4. National Garden of Athens

The National Garden of Athens, together with the Pedion Areos Park, is one of the largest landscaped enclosures in the city. In this oasis in the middle of the city, you can take a walk under the shade of its lush trees, rest by its beautiful pond and visit the botanical museum to see all kinds of native plants. To take advantage of the visit, you can continue the walk through the gardens of the Zappeion, with its stunning fountain and numerous statues, then amble across Vasilissis Olgas street to visit the Temple of Zeus, another of the essential monuments of Athens.

5. National Archaeological Museum of Athens

To continue your deep-dive into the art and history of old Greece, you have to make sure you visit the Archaeological Museum of Athens. Among its more than 60 rooms, spread over two floors, you will find ancient pieces that will transport you to another era. Admire objects from the Cycladic and Mycenaean civilizations, sculptures recovered from the countless archaeological sites across the country, or vessels illustrated from the 2nd to 4th century B.C. Highly recommended for all museum - not to mention archeology, history and art - lovers!

6. Temple of Poseidon

Even though we technically must leave Athens - 70 km to be precise - you won't regret taking the short excursion to the southernmost tip of the Attica region to visit the Temple of Poseidon, one of the true monuments to the Golden Age of Athens.

Located at Cape Sunio, just over an hour’s drive from the center of Athens, the columns of this icon from the 5th century BC stand on a small peak, where you will have spectacular views of the Saronic Gulf. Watching the sunset from this enclave is sure to be an unforgettable experience.

7. Vouliagmeni Beach

Although the Greek islands are the most popular destination to enjoy the country's beaches, the west coast of Athens is a great option for a dip during your Greek getaway. After the popular beaches of Faliro, Alimos and Glyfada, which can be reached comfortably by tram from the center of Athens, we find the exclusive beach of Vouliagmeni, a paradisaic haven surrounded by calm waters. Nearby you will find upscale restaurants, a marina, and the Vouliagmeni Suites Athens, a fabulous 4-star hotel with a pool and sea views.

8. Agora of Athens

Alongside the Acropolis, one of the other outstanding sites in the city is the Agora of Athens, a large enclosure that served as a political, religious, and commercial center centuries ago. Two of the most remarkable monuments are the Temple of Aphrodite Urania and the Hephaestion, but the Stoa of Attalos, the building that today houses the Agora Museum, is our top tip. Its collection includes Athenian sculptures, small but precious objects found in excavations in the area, and a variety of historical pieces related to the democratic and legislative system of classical Greece. Fascinating, no?

9. Syntagma Square

Without a doubt, one of the places that you cannot miss during your holiday in Greece is Syntagma Square. This sprawling central architectural delight lies in front of the Greek parliament, and is famous for hosting the changing of the guard every hour, when the Presidential Guard perform a unique ceremony to pay homage to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. After experiencing the event, take the opportunity to drink in the sights of the popular Plaka neighborhood, or stroll through the lively shopping streets of the center to Monastiraki Square - another of the many must-sees of Athens.

10. Byzantine Monastery of Daphni

Lying 11 km north-west of Athens, this UNESCO World Heritage-listed monastery is yet another slice of history. Take the opportunity to see original Byzantine art and - although some areas have been damaged over time - you can book a visit to see the colorful frescoes and mosaics that decorate the walls and interior domes. Fun fact: this 11th-century monastery was built on the site of a sanctuary, originally built in honor of the god Apollo.

Along with all this ancient beauty, the comparatively low number of tourists, its location next to a wooded area and the tranquility of its outer cloister, this could be a golden opportunity to harness some inner peace.

THE HOTEL IS LOCATED IN AN EXCELLENT LOCATION IN KARAISKAKI SQUARE, CLOSE TO TRANSPORTATION (METRO, BUS, TAXI). VERY NEAR THE AREA OF PSYRI, MONASTIRAKI, CENTER. REGARDING SERVICE: negatively 1. ORIGINALLY, WE WERE GIVEN A ROOM WITH A SIDE VIEW OF THE ACROPOLIS. AFTER I NOTICED THEM AND THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY WOULD FIX IT BY THE AFTERNOON, THIS WAS ONLY AFTER MY REPEATED CALLS TO THE RECEPTION. THE NEW ROOM WAS WITH AN EXCELLENT VIEW OF THE ACROPOLIS OF ATHENS - JUST AS I PAID FOR. 2. THE FIRST ROOM WE GOT HAD A ”BLOWN” BATHROOM DOOR WHICH WOULD NOT CLOSE. 3. THE CLEANLINESS OF THE FLOOR WAS UNACCEPTABLE, WITH A LOT OF FLUFF, WHICH WASN'T PICKED UP ANY OF THE FOLLOWING DAYS. POSITIVE 1. THE DIRECT SERVICE OF THE RECEPTION TO THE ROOM QUESTION THAT ARISED IN THE AFTERNOON. 2. THE FRIENDLY SERVICE OF ALL THE STAFF AT BREAKFAST 3. LARGE VARIETY OF BREAKFAST FIXTURES 4. COFFEE MACHINE WITH CAPSULES, IRON IN ROOM

This hotel was very nice it was very clean and comfortable parking was made available however you must reserve your parking space prior to arrival. The cost is €10 per day which was very reasonable considering we were only there for two nights as we landed in Athens and our main Location would be Santorini. The breakfast was good could have had a few more choices but overall very well satisfied. The rooftop bar was amazing. We were given a welcome beverage at the rooftop bar which was very nice the sunset view of acropolis from the hotel was nice I guess the only thing I did not like about the hotel was the actual area in which it was located. The entire hotel staff was very kind and considerate and always willing to assist and help with any questions that we had.

This is an amazing hotel with an amazing staff. We were greeted and assisted with everything upon our arrival (check-in, bags, etc.) and everyone was very hospitable. The rooms are comfortable and are always clean. We did not use the rooftop pool, but the views were stunning from there (we could see the Acropolis), where they also have a restaurant and a bar. We ate at the restaurant and hung out at the bar some nights which was nice (good food and drinks), but be prepared to pay top hotel prices. The location of the hotel is convenient - it is right across from Syntagma Square, a popular meeting place for many scheduled activities. We also felt we could easily access surrounding neighborhoods, restaurants, and bars by walking from the hotel. Overall a great place to stay!

The location is not very good. It takes five minutes to reach Constitution Square and 20 minutes to the Acropolis. It is within walking distance from Plaka. Next to it is the Women's Street, where there are various restaurants and supermarkets. The attitude of the waiter is very good, the room is okay, the family room is two completely independent rooms, and the public area at the door is also enclosed as a connection (suitable for luggage), which is very suitable for older children or elderly people of the same shape, without interfering with each other . The only thing is that the power of the hair dryer is too small and the breakfast is basically not changed.

Great location in walking distance to the Plaka and the Acropolis. The roof top terrace is sensational with spectacular views across Athens and to the Acropolis & worth staying just for this experience. Dinner and breakfast are both served on the terrace & the food is very good. The hotel looks smart but showing some wrinkles around the edges. My room was quite large with a good sized outside terrace. But the room has a great shortage of power points for plugging in devices and I had to use the bedside lamp plug. The bed is two twins which I don’t like & the bath / shower had nowhere to hang the shower hose & the bath was very narrow. The wifi is very slow. There are a few English channels on the TV. The hotel is very popular with tour groups & so gets quite crowded, busy and noisy. But a pleasant stay, conveniently located with the terrace restaurant view the outstanding feature.

Close to the subway, opposite the park, quiet, rooms are large enough. There are 3 stops from Constitution Square. The service is warm and attentive. I did not eat breakfast at the hotel. The quality is not clear. I will consider living next time.

Booked two rooms for a three day stay and both rooms were comfortable and quiet. The bathroom in my room was smaller than my daughters but for me it was fine. Small bath but I managed to use it. The staff are great and breakfast was a good start to the day ahead. Nice coffee. Our flight back to the uk was cancelled due to air traffic control going on strike and the hotel let us stay another night without any fuss even letting us stay in the same rooms. All in all I have no regrets booking this hotel and for the price it’s a great choice. Reception booked our taxi to the airport and it was a fixed price of 40 euros.

The company we received before helped us make a reservation for a few days, and then I didn’t want to move around, so I continued to renew the subscription at his house. The overall service is good, the front desk is very enthusiastic, and the front desk has different snacks every day to entertain guests for free; buffet breakfast It’s not bad; the traffic is a 15-minute drive from the hotel to Syntagma Square, the room is relatively clean, and the room facilities are up to three-star standards in China, everything else is OK.

Excellent location. Walking distance to all attractions, if you are a walker. Wonderful staff, very polite and helpful. Elevator a little slow :) but it gets you to the floor requested. The room is big and bed very comfortable. Everything was in perfect working order (and we even got to watch one game from the world cup!!). House was in everyday to make the room. Shower very large and grsate water pressure! I didn't like the breakfat, but it was just me. My wife called me ”spoiled” :) Thank you for accomodating us!

Stayed for 5 nights, the location is perfect as there is a metro station right outside the hotel, which will take you to most of the major tourist sites. The hop on hop off bus stops right outside the hotel also, so if you are a tourist it's easy to get around from the hotel. As four ladies alone, we felt very safe and would get taxi's to and from hotel to go out in the evenings, which the helpful staff are happy to book for you. The breakfast is brilliant with lots of choices so you never get bored. We stayed in a standard room which was small but perfectly formed, with lovely decor and all the amenities you will need. The best thing about this hotel is the amazing rooftop pool, bar and restaurant. Our taxi driver from the airport told us it was amazing and many locals will go there particularly at the weekends. Staff are so friendly especially Denisa our lovely waitress, food and drinks are varied and very nice. I would stay here again if I'm coming to Athens.

We returned to this hotel for a second visit because it is so nice. Rooms are modern and comfortable. The view is unsurpassed: you have the Acropolis on one side and the Temple of Olympian Zeus on the other. The location is perfect for sightseeing. It is a five-minute walk to the Acropolis Museum. Lower floor, street side rooms can be a little noisy, so you might consider some ear plugs or asking for a room on a high floor. Breakfast is amazing! There are hot foods and cold foods and lots of pastries, all quite good. I especially enjoyed the Greek items: spanakopita, tiropita, dolmas. The elevators are tiny and can be bottlenecks at times.

This is an extremely nice hotel situated in a perfect location. Our stay and review are based on a Superior room You would be hard pressed to find an Athens hotel in a better location. You are right in the middle of all the action with shops and restaurants nearby. You are spoilt for choice. Although in a busy area we found the excellent double- glazed doors/windows kept any noises out and it was not an issue at all. Our Superior room came with a kettle and tea/coffee making facilities although that is not listed on their website. It may be worth e-mailing them if this is important to you. There was air-con but in March there was no need to make use of it so we cannot comment on its efficiency. The toilet/bathroom came with those tiny bottles of shampoo and body wash which we refuse to use on environmental grounds so we brought our own and used that. There was a sign saying that if the used towels were hung up then it was assumed that we were happy to reuse them. The cleaners replaced them daily regardless. The rooms were kept very clean. This hotel has much going for it. We grabbed a deal here at a very attractive price which included breakfast. The breakfast arrangements were in a fairly small area but we felt that a good selection was provided considering the space limitations. Plenty of fresh vegetable choices and delicious too. The Tomatoes and Cucumber just tasted so much better than we are used to. Cereals, bread, cakes, fruit and coffee from a machine. We looked forward to our breakfast every morning and didn’t grow tired of it. Minor gripes (being very picky). The over the bath shower was a mini battle in so much that it was prone to shoot water out onto the floor if you weren’t being careful. It could have been better but all we had to do was to adjust our showering habits and all was ok in the end. Our room had a balcony facing out to the street below. It would have been nice for a couple of chairs out there rather than just a large pot plant and the air-con unit for company. I did notice that no other balconies on other building had chairs out so perhaps that is just the Athens way. We had a Fridge in our room. Very welcome. A very close mini supermarket was the cheapest place we could find to buy water. E0.39 for 1.5 litres as I recall. We loved this hotel. All the staff were so nice and so helpful. I can’t remember all of their names but Irena and Eva come to mind. They helped make our stay wonderful. It had a curiously homely feel about the place. March time was a great time of the year as it was a pleasant day time temperature with it getting a bit chilly in the evenings. You could still dine outdoors but with a patio heater nearby. We loved Athens and have decided to return next March with the flights already booked. We will stay at the Plaka Hotel again. 5 stars from us

Absolutely loved this hotel. Although it doesn't look like a hotel when you arrive and the street it's on looks dodgy, it was fabulous. The rooms were clean, spacious and quirky. The best feature of the hotel was the rooftop terrace and bar. Absolutely AMAZING views of the Acropolis from there both at day and night. Would highly recommend
