The hotel is directly opposite the exit of JR Hakodate Station and just across the bus stop area.
Basically, all Hakodate attractions can be reached by bus. It takes about 15 minutes to walk back to the hotel from the cross street. If you are too lazy to wait for the streetcar after eating clown burgers for dinner, you can take a slow walk back.
The room is clean. You need to swipe your room card at the hotel entrance after 11 pm to enter. There is a ramen shop downstairs (within 10 steps from the hotel entrance) and Nemuro Hanamaru (30 steps from the hotel entrance). It is recommended to eat during off-peak hours.

JR Inn Hakodate is particularly outstanding in several aspects: great location which is directly connected to JR Hakodate station so people would not get wet even it’s raining, special offer on extra pillows with different material, relaxing open area which allows people to rest after bathing (please see photos attached), amenities such as washing machine and microwave etc, the unique view of JR railway in room. Just one thing: The space in my room became very limited after I opened my 26’ luggage on the floor. Overall the hotel is perfect!

I am very satisfied with my 2 days stay in this hotel.
There are things that make the hotel a standout which are
1. Location and convenience . Walking distance to Jr station and the fact that it is right next to hakodate morning market offers the guest wide variety of choice for traditional jap seafood breakfast. You can get a variety of seafood and fresh fruits like strawberry n melon from the market. There are quite a number of restaurants where u can enjoy sashimi and seafood don.
2. Beautiful view from the hotel lounge and hotel room. The view was simply picturesque
3. Facilities. Both indoor n outdoor onsen available for the guests. U can enjoy soaking in onsen while enjoying the nice view it offered. Bringing comfort to the body and pleasure to the eyes at the same time.
Washing machine, cooker and microwave oven is available in the room. It brings great convenience to travellers where we can wash clothes in own room without leaving the room
4. Friendly and polite staffs
5. It has own private parking that is charged at 1000 yen per night

The Smile Hotel Premium Hakodate Goryokaku is a typical Japanese business hotel, so although the photos of the rooms may look as though the rooms are reasonably spacious, in reality it’s just a typical business hotel, with minimal space. While this should not be a big issue for many guests, if you’ve not experienced it before, be ready for a rather space limited experience. Having said that, the room was quite clean and apart from some scuff marks on the walls, it presented quite well. It’s also important to note, that since it’s a business hotel the bathroom is quite small, with the bathroom wash basin protruding into the bath tub & shower area and the toilet was clearly designed for significantly smaller users. Apart from changing towels, providing new slippers and replenishing coffee & tea supplies, there was no servicing of my room over the duration of my 3-night stay. This is all normal, so be ready for it.
The biggest annoyance was that there was no air conditioning available during the period I stayed. This is hotel policy at this time of the year, and the management clearly think that guests have no right to control the temperature, and therefore enjoy some level of comfort in their room. Because of this, on my first night the room temperature was approximately 25°c (although I couldn’t turn the air conditioning on, the control unit displayed the actual room temperature), which when combined with the fact that the bed has an arctic standard duvet (or futon - whatever you want to call it), the temperature of the room was NOT conducive to restful sleep. When I enquired about this the next morning, the front desk clerk bluntly said “open the window”, which of course I had tried to do during the night, but for some reason the handle to open and close the window had been removed, making it impossible to open the window. The clerk kindly offered to go to my room and open the window (presumably using a special tool) once I had left the room for the day, which he did. The difference in room temperature was quite noticeable when I returned that the evening, but why this policy in the first place, and the belligerence and attitude of management about guest comfort is beyond me.
The other issue was the WiFi, which was patchy and unreliable on my floor. The only way I could connect any of my devices (2 phones & 1 tablet), was to go to the lobby, connect and then return to my room. Once a connection had been established, I was able to reconnect whenever I returned to my room, however the strength of the WiFi signal varied considerably when making calls using various apps (e.g., WhatsApp, Line and FB Messenger) and therefore the call stability was unreliable with calls frequently dropping out. When I mentioned this to front desk staff, they offered to reset the WiFi on my floor, however it made little difference.
The above matters (air conditioning and WiFi) are all things that are taken for granted these days and are expected of any reasonable hotel, so to experience the difficulties outlined indicates to me that the hotel management is not really serious about guest satisfaction or comfort.
Draw what conclusions you will from this review, but from my perspective, it’s is unlikely I would stay at this hotel again when I next return to Hakodate.

Excellent location as the hotel is right in front of the Hakodate JR station. The hotel also came with free hot spring accessible for all guests. However the room is quite small with little room for packing luggages. The toilet is also small. There is free coffee that allows you to take away at the ground floor (note the coffee machine is opened in the morning 6-10am, and then available 3pm- 10pm).

Always stayed here when I travel to Hakodate and as usual the hotel doesn't disappoint! Good location just beside the red brick warehouse, near the hakodate tram station and also the Mt Hakodate Ropeway. There are plenty of food options nearby, and you can walk to Hakodate JR station from the hotel. Beds are spacious, and there is even a mini area for you to chill and relax after a long day of sightseeing. Definitely recommend for budget conscious travellers!

Thank you for your thoughtfulness!! I appreciate it. The large public bath was also very nice, you could choose your shampoo and body shampoo, and the massage chair was free. The breakfast buffet had a wide variety of items and was delicious. After dropping off my daughter, we were able to relax until a little while before check-out. The view of Goryokaku from the 12th floor was beautiful🤩. Dinner was also nearby, so it was convenient. Thanks to the parking, we were able to park in the hotel's parking lot🅿️, and we even received a service voucher when we told them we would be going out twice. We would definitely use it again!! My child and I were very grateful for your thoughtfulness~Thank you very much😊!!

We stayed in the annex!
It was a stylish building with an old-fashioned design.
The interior was old, but
there was a fire tv in the room, so we were able to watch YouTube and movies!
For breakfast, side dishes (which changed daily?) were already on a mini tray, and we could help ourselves to the rest!
Everything was delicious!
Thank you very much!

Great
Pphua.scI personally feel this hotel is a good starting point especially if you love exploring by walking.
From Hakodate Train Station, it is about a 5-10 min walk. Along the way, you'll find a number of food options (kaizen-don selection) at Hakodate Asaichi that is best for breakfast/lunch and also Lucky Pierrot (local restaurant burger chain with wide selection) across the street. There is also a Lawson's convenience store nearby.
The hotel is within walking distance (<5 min) from the Morning Market (where you can get all the preserved seafood for souvenirs) and also the must-try Uni Marumaki's (price range Y3500 and up for the recommended items). Further up, after about 20 minutes walking, is the Red Brick Warehouses (Lots of souvenir shopping and some of the more-branded food to try between meals - cakes, ice cream etc). The Hakodate Seafood Market is also around this area where fresh sashimi is available. I was surprised to find similarly priced oysters (Y900 for 2) here that's of better quality than at the Morning Market.
I've concentrated so far on the plentiful food options nearby because the breakfast buffet had very, very limited options and limited seating (see last photo). The main option I could recall was a selection of onigiri with different flavours, some western-type food, and bread. I think it's fine because Hakodate is really a foodie's place so you should try eating outside the hotel (especially sashimi and kaizendon).
The hotel itself is very clean and has all basic amenities that serve it's purpose.
NnomadwannabeLocation is perfect, right across the station. Room size is good for Japanese standards. Breakfast selection is great! Everyday there's different food and yummy. Really good. Microwave at the ground floor and there's free flow drinks. Staff are friendly and always greet you when you're at level 1.
XXiaoxiangzhuqiongyingTransportation
The hotel is close to the airport. It takes about ten minutes to get there by taxi from the airport, which is very convenient. There are buses and trams for travel, but Hakodate is very small, so it is not expensive to take a taxi. Next to it is the Tropical Botanical Garden, where you can see monkeys taking a hot spring bath, which is very cute. There is also the popular Ichijiwen Ramen, but we didn't go because there were too many people.
Service
The hotel has a Chinese waiter who is very enthusiastic and helped us a lot. The hot soup at the front desk is delicious, and a cup of it is very cold in winter. There is also free coffee to drink, which is very comfortable.
Facilities
Booked a Japanese-style room with sea view, and someone will make the bed in the evening, very comfortable tatami. The sea view is very beautiful, and the hotel's open-air hot spring can overlook the sea view. There is also a foot bath facing the sea at the door, which is very comfortable to relax before leaving.
Food
Dinner and breakfast are both buffets, sashimi and barbecue are delicious, and Hokkaido beer is also very good.
Hakodate Hot Spring Hotel with a good overall impression.
AAnonymous UserA small Japanese-style hotel, opposite the tropical botanical garden, the location is not facing the main street and is very quiet. Although the room is old, it is clean and comfortable. The hot spring is good, and the ingredient list shows that it is 100% natural hot spring. Because there are few people, about 5 or so, the service quality is very high. I knocked over my plate in the restaurant, and the staff quickly brought me a towel and a clean bathrobe. I was really touched. Breakfast is very average, but there are no shops around to solve the problem. There is free sparkling wine coffee and milk ice cream from afternoon to evening.
AAnonymous UserHakodate is one of the main cities on Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island. Looming over the town is 334m-high Mount Hakodate. The mountain's summit, reachable by aerial ropeway gondola, offers dramatic nighttime views. At its base is Motomachi, a neighborhood of steep streets with Western-style, early-20th-century buildings. A city landmark is the grand Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward, built in 1910.
AAnonymous UserConveniently located, close to the train station, public transport stops and a shop. Excellent breakfast. The room is small, but clean and comfortable. Stayed for one night and did not find a disposable razor or toothpaste inside - nothing critical, but it was unexpected. I recommend.
JJunghwanThe hotel is an hour away from Hakodate station. It is an old styled hotel but well kept. Their bath is superb and we enjoyed using it. The receptionists didn’t speak English and they had instructions in English instead.
They don’t provide any water. You need to purchase them for 100yen each. I asked for Japanese room but they gave me beds instead.
I had pleasant stay and would consider visiting again
KKa ManOur group of three temporarily added one more night and had to have one more room. The hotel staff kindly confirmed and arranged the room again and again. Originally only booked a smoking room and a lower floor room, but the hotel gave us a non-smoking and high-floor room. The location of the hotel is very convenient to take the tram to various attractions. I will definitely recommend friends to Hakodate to choose them. The breakfast is also very suitable for my taste and many choices. I am very satisfied with this hotel experience.
MMiss JojoThe Japanese-Western style room overlooks the sea, and the breakfast and dinner buffet has a variety of options. There is also a karaoke book. The hotel is far away from the hotel by electricity. Nearby, you can go to the botanical garden to watch monkeys bathing in hot springs.
Iizm0930I stayed here when I went to Hakodate for a live show.
It was about a 10-minute walk from Hakodate Arena, it has a hot spring, a hotel with an ocean view, and there is a 24-hour Hasegawa store within walking distance, and it was a great choice.
The sunlight pours in through the large windows, so even though it is late January in the middle of winter, you don't have to turn on the heater.
You can relax with the sound of the ocean in the background.
The open-air bath is like an infinity pool, and the ocean is right in front of you, so you can stay in it forever.
The bus to Hakodate Station leaves almost right in front, there is a convenience store nearby, and the 24-hour Hasegawa store is just a short walk away, so it is very convenient.
There is no need to rush to get on public transportation after the arena live show, you can drink at a nearby izakaya until the sun sets and then go home, and the front desk is open 24 hours a day, so it was reassuring.
Whenever I go to Hakodate, I always stay around Hakodate Station, but this was such a great encounter that I think I will stay at this hotel in the future!
