Shosoin and Shosoin Exhibition

Nara Todai-ji Temple's Shosoin was built in the 8th year of the Tenpyo Shoho era (756 AD). It was built because Empress Komyo donated all the beloved items of the late Emperor Shomu to the Great Buddha of Todai-ji Temple (Vairocana Buddha) and all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. This marked the beginning of the history of the "Shosoin Treasures". After that, the treasures offered by the royal family, together with the Buddhist instruments, ritual items, and ancient documents mainly used for the eye-opening ceremony of the Great Buddha of Todai-ji Temple, formed the large-scale Shosoin Treasures we see today. The treasures include the daily necessities and collections of emperors and nobles, as well as the household registration of ordinary people. There are many types and quantities of treasures, many of which come from overseas, especially from the Tang Dynasty. Therefore, Shosoin can also be regarded as a microcosm of ancient culture centered on the culture of the Tang Dynasty in China. The Shosoin, which houses these treasures, is located in the northwest of the Great Buddha Hall of Todai-ji Temple. It is a wooden structure with a simple and unadorned design. In 1946, the first Shosoin Exhibition was held at the Nara National Museum. Since 1947, the Shosoin Exhibition has become a regular exhibition held every autumn and continues to this day. The Nara National Museum also built a new building for this purpose, with a design inspired by the Shosoin. Photography is not allowed in the Shosoin Exhibition Hall, but there are high-quality exhibition catalogs available for purchase. Nigatsudo todaiji 🙏🛕

#fallingseason #helloautumn #timetotravel To the east of Todaiji Temple, Nigatsudo is a smaller temple also part of Todaiji, but an important complex in its own right. At sunset, it offers one of the most beautiful scenes in all of Nara. You can approach from a path in front of Todaiji, which leads up cobbled steps flanked by ancient stone walls, or from the back of Todaiji, where the path leads to a covered wooden staircase. Either way, as you reach the top, the magnificent wooden structure of the main hall looms above you. As the sun sets and the lanterns are lit, the views over Nara are unbeatable. The Nigatsudo is best known for Omizutori, a fire and water ceremony on March 12 every year, where huge flaming torches are held out from the temple balcony. The next day, sacred water is drawn from a well under the temple, which is said to have healing properties. The ceremony has been held here without a break since 752.

Todai-Ji Temple is a popular landmark which you should visit if you are in Nara. It tis extremely Impressive and considered the worlds largest wooden structure. It is so convenient that this site was walking distance from the metro station, and also it is close to other places of interest. #celebratewithtrip This is an Owl cafe located at Nara station, Nara prefecture. I have had the most wonderful experience in this cafe! You get to pet the beautiful owls and if you’re lucky enough, you can catch their feeding time~ The owls are nice and calm when we were petting them. So cute! You could also get to wear protective gloves and have them rest on your arm. It was so cool! Highly recommend!

Mt. Kasuga Primeval Forest

#naratrip This forest is part of UNESCO world heritage and it's a beautiful hike. If you're coming from Nara Park, you can enter the trail from just east of the restaurant Mizuya Chaya. Going around the whole forest took us about four hours. It will take you to the Wakakusayama hilltop, the Uguisuno-taki waterfall, and then along the southern edge of the forest. Some more detail: The full circuit is about four hours trek, mostly gravel path or asphalt, but quite a bit of incline in some places. Going from the trail entry to the hilltop takes about an hour, where you'll want to pause to enjoy the view, then another hour or so to get to the waterfall, and another hour and a half trek to the edge of the forest in the southwest. It's possible to meet cars along the way, but we never did, only two mopeds and two bikes along the full circuit. We met a handful of other hikers as well, mostly Japanese. It's perfect to spend a morning or afternoon. If it's a hot day, don't be discouraged, as the path is almost completely in shade from the trees and the forest is pleasantly cool even on a hot day. I recommend taking a lot of water along, as we did not see any water taps along the way. There are two restrooms we went by, one on the hilltop (where there are also vending machines with drinks), and one at the reststop on the southeast edge of the forest.
