Back from Hami: My perspective on spending changed after a 3-day trip
Just got back from Hami, and I really have to say: this little city hidden in eastern Xinjiang is perfect for those on a budget who still want to see stunning scenery! 🥹
For many, the first places that come to mind when visiting Xinjiang are Kanas, Yili, or Nalati, but Hami gave me a completely different feeling. It’s not crowded here; instead, you get vast Gobi deserts, snow-capped mountains, poplar forests, the scent of melons and fruits, and a slow-paced frontier lifestyle.
In August, Hami has plenty of sunshine ☀️ during the day, but the air is dry and crisp, not humid like in the south. Standing in the vast wilderness, watching the distant mountains roll, you suddenly feel your worries shrink.
If you love off-the-beaten-path travel, photography, and experiencing nature without spending a fortune, Hami is definitely worth a trip! 💛
✨ Highlights
🌄 1. Barkol Grassland: The ultimate summer healing spot
I love the relaxed vibe here! In August, the grassland is lush green, with snow-capped mountains in the distance and soft grass underfoot. Cattle and sheep wander slowly by—every photo you take looks like a desktop wallpaper 📸.
Sitting on the grass, feeling the breeze, I really felt like I had successfully escaped the city.
🌌 2. Ghost City: Nature’s masterpiece
Seeing the Yardang landforms for the first time was breathtaking. The wind blowing across the desert has carved them into all sorts of strange shapes. Especially in the evening, when the sunlight paints the rocks gold, it’s so beautiful it doesn't feel real.
I recommend going in the afternoon; otherwise, the midday sun is too strong, and it’s hard to keep your eyes open for photos.
🏜️ 3. Hami Dahaidao: Pure wilderness vibes
This place is perfect for those who love road trips and adventure.
The whole route is filled with Gobi, sand dunes, and uninhabited landscapes. Even a phone photo looks like a cinematic shot. Standing on that vast land, you truly feel the scale of Xinjiang.
🍈 4. Hami melon experience: Sweet to the core
How can you come to Hami and miss the Hami melons? August is peak fruit season. There are many melon stands along the road with affordable prices, and every one you buy is sweet and juicy.
Sitting in the shade, eating a piece of cold, refreshing Hami melon—this kind of happiness is so simple.
🚗 My 3-day, 2-night budget travel itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Hami > King's Palace > Hami Old Street > Taste local food
After arriving in Hami in the morning, I don't recommend rushing off; take some time to soak in the city atmosphere first.
The King's Palace is great for a leisurely stroll to learn about the local history and culture. In the evening, take a walk through the Old Street, enjoy the evening breeze, and grab some local snacks to kick off your trip ✨.
Day 2: Barkol Grassland > Barkol Ancient City > Grassland sunset
Head toward Barkol in the morning.
The scenery changes noticeably along the way, transitioning from the city into grasslands and mountains.
Spend the afternoon taking photos and walking on the grassland, watching clouds drift over the mountain peaks, and waiting for the sunset in the evening 🌅.
You can choose to stay in a local guesthouse nearby; at night, you can look up and see a sky full of stars.
Day 3: Explore the Dahaidao area > Return to Hami
Leave early in the morning for Dahaidao.
I recommend setting aside plenty of time here because there is so much scenery along the way—stop and take photos whenever you see a spot you like.
Return to the city in the afternoon, buy some dried fruits, and wrap up this off-the-beaten-path journey.
🏡 Accommodation recommendations
You don't need to look for luxury accommodation in Hami. For budget travel, you can easily choose cost-effective guesthouses or local inns.
If you want convenience for dining and shopping, stay in the city center; it's easier to go out and explore at night.
If you want to experience the natural scenery, choose unique accommodation near Barkol. Staying by the grassland and waking up to the morning sun is a much better experience 🌿.
I personally recommend staying one night in a unique guesthouse. Sitting around chatting and watching the stars at night is much more interesting than staying in a standard room.
🌈 My healing moment
What left the deepest impression on me during this trip wasn't any specific attraction, but rather sitting on the Barkol Grassland for an entire afternoon.
I wasn't rushing through an itinerary, and I wasn't constantly taking photos.
I just sat there, watching the wind blow across the grass and the clouds move slowly.
At that moment, I suddenly felt that the true meaning of travel might just be to slow down.
The things that cause anxiety in the city don't seem so important anymore when you're out in the vast, open world 🍃.
🍜 Foodie heaven
🥇 Hami melon: A must-eat in August!
The sweetness is on point. You can enjoy all the fruit you want for just over 10 yuan per person. There are many melon stands along the road; pick one with an even color that smells fragrant, and you generally won't go wrong.
🥈 Lamb skewers: The source of joy in Xinjiang travel
Hami's lamb is tender and fresh, without a strong gamey taste. Sitting in a small shop at night, eating skewers and drinking beverages is very comfortable.
At an average small shop, you can eat very well for about 40–60 yuan per person.
🥉 Lamb pilaf (Shouzhua Fan): A must-try
The rice is rich and oily, the lamb is tender, and it's paired with carrots and onions—it's incredibly fragrant.
The first time you eat Xinjiang lamb pilaf, you'll really think, "I never knew rice could be this delicious."
🥘 Big plate chicken: Great for sharing
The chicken is flavorful, the potatoes are soft and tender, and dipping naan into the sauce at the end is just amazing.
Order one for two or three people, and you can get full for just a few dozen yuan per person.
🌞 August Hami travel tips
✅ Be sure to use sun protection!
The UV rays in Xinjiang are no joke. I recommend bringing a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses.
Don't think that just because the weather is dry, you won't get sunburned. It's very easy to come back a few shades darker.
✅ Pack comfortable shoes
Many places in Hami require walking or outdoor activities, so a comfortable pair of sneakers is very important.
Don't wear uncomfortable shoes just for the sake of photos, or it will take away from the joy of your trip.
✅ Plan your transportation in advance
If you want to explore Hami in depth, I recommend renting a car or hiring a driver.
Some attractions are quite far apart, and public transportation is limited, so planning your route in advance will save a lot of time.
✅ Bring some supplies
Wilderness areas don't have convenience stores everywhere like the city does, so I recommend preparing bottled water, snacks, and a power bank.
Especially when heading toward Dahaidao, being prepared in advance is really important.
👕 Weather and clothing
In August, daytime temperatures in Hami are high, so short sleeves and sun-protective clothing are basically enough.
However, there is a significant temperature difference between day and night, especially if you go to the grasslands or mountainous areas, so I recommend bringing a light jacket 🧥.
For outfits, I recommend light-colored clothing paired with a hat and sunglasses; they look great in photos against the Gobi and grasslands.
💛 Finally:
Hami may not be the most popular destination in Xinjiang, but it has a particularly precious feeling—quiet, vast, and authentic.
It doesn't have too much commercial packaging; instead, it has the sound of the wind blowing across the Gobi, the scent of melons and fruits, and a healing sense that makes you slow down.
If you're looking for a place in August that is budget-friendly, uncrowded, beautiful, and offers grand Xinjiang scenery, Hami is definitely worth it! 🌵✨
