Woke up early today for breakfast, excited for the day ahead with a trip later. I arrived early and waited while enjoying the morning scenery at the Naka River. Good thing I made a reservation beforehand, as the crowd started forming soon after I entered. They open at 7 am, and I reserved for 7 am. Breakfast has a one‑hour limit. This place was one of my bookmarked spots from years ago that I missed on my last trip, so I am glad I finally made it. Mentai Ikura Tamagoyaki Don Gozen (¥2950) Served with obanzai, condiments and Yame tea. Order a main and enjoy free‑flow rice, sides and green tea or water. Fragrant rice topped with ikura, rolled egg and a whole slab of mentaiko. Mentai never disappoints, that rich, savoury, briny umami bursting roe spreads throughout your mouth energetically. With the addition of ikura, an extra popping effect enhances the profile. The rolled egg was thin on its own but together became thick and fluffy with a savoury note. The free‑flow seasonal obanzai, rice cooked in a hagama pot, Kyushu miso soup, Japanese pickles and Yame tea gave a taste of what locals usually eat and made the meal filling. Late‑Night Studies Have Never Been So Drunk XD First day of “school,” and I was kinda nervous. Wish me luck! Once you enter the class, you are automatically enrolled in the all‑you‑can‑drink system. The first hour is ¥3000, and then it automatically extends every 2 minutes for ¥50, capped at a maximum fee of ¥4500. There are many strict rules, just like a typical school, and you have to follow them. You are required to download an app, register as a student, and complete a mini quiz before entering to ensure you understand the rules. Attendance is also marked through the app, where Master Rodori gives you a passcode to check in. The app is pretty cool. You can see reviews of the sake they have, learn more about sake knowledge, browse and wishlist bottles, earn badges, and more. It is the main tool you need here. You can even scan QR codes to learn more about the sake you are drinking. Two fridges near the elevator are stocked with all‑you‑can‑drink table sake. Filling Morning Breakfast to Start the Day before heading to various parks to visit for the morning. This place is cash only, so be prepared. Special Seafood Don & Assortment of Tempura (¥3000) The seafood don comes with salmon, tuna, shrimp, snow crab leg, amberjack, sea bream, yellowtail and uni on shiso leaf, topped with a lemon slice. On its own it tastes rather average and plain, but they provide seafood don sauce that enhances the flavour, adding a sweet, savoury and nutty balance. For the sashimi, I felt the white fish category was not handled properly. The texture was icy, stringy and gummy, perhaps affected by thawing or storage. It made me wonder what I was even eating, why it was so chewy, why it lacked freshness, and why it was so tough. The rest were fairly standard, while some pieces were really oishii and silky. Overall, the sashimi did not hype me up, but the tempura on the other hand was excellent. The tempura was light and bouncy, with smooth crispy batter, fresh vegetables, and very fresh shrimp that was bouncy and Q. I loved the prawn tempura the most, it was so good. Crisp and crunchy ingredients dipped into tempura sauce with minced radish gave a savoury umami lift. Nanbanzuke sides featured fried mackerel marinated in a vinegared sauce with sliced onions, and carrots. The tangy sweetness was refreshing and balanced the richness of the fish. I was famished and eager to try, so I joined the queue that stretched for at least 45 minutes. First you line up to buy a ticket, then another line to enter the shop and finally eat. The hunger made me wonder if the food tasted extra good because I was starving, or if it was simply that good. It turned out to be both. Rich, savoury, umami and delicious, it was a memorable experience of food that I am craving again now. Premium Spicy Tsukemen (¥1700) Chewy, springy medium thick noodles with a large slice of delicious savoury char siu and a beautiful egg with a perfect jammy yolk. The dipping sauce is made from pork bone, chicken bone, vegetables and dried seafood, giving it sweetness, savouriness, umami depth, richness and lingering creaminess. I had the very very spicy version, and it was indeed very very spicy, very very thick and very very impactful, with thick cut pork cubes and bamboo shoots inside. Every dip was very very shiok and very very hot, huff huff, and full of flavour. Noodle regular portion is 200g, with free upsizes to 250g or 300g. Downsizing to 120g earns you a free topping under ¥200. Plain water is self service. Pork Rice (¥400) Leave some dipping sauce and mix it in for an epic bowl.
