On this 3-day self-driving trip to Santai and Yanting to explore ancient sites, we mostly visited lesser-known nationally protected sites. The Taliangzi cliff tomb group was the first stop. It takes about 2 hours from Chengdu to get there. The Taliangzi cliff tombs are located on the mountainside north of Xiangtan River in Guiflower Village, Jigang Town, Zhongjiang County. Navigation can get you close, and the national protection monument by the roadside is easy to find, but there are no signs indicating the exact location of the cliff tombs. You have to park by the road and hike up the mountain to find them. · Following the guidance of senior traveler Sifei, since it’s called Liangzi, you have to head up the mountain ridge. After passing some mountain farms, not far ahead, you find a trail through the weeds and shrubs to continue climbing. Before long, we were lucky to find the tombs. The best landmark during the whole process was the surveillance cameras on the cliff wall. Each camera corresponds to one cliff tomb. · According to the introduction, the Taliangzi cliff tombs were carved in the mid to late Eastern Han period. There are 9 cliff tombs along the mountainside, but we only found 5. Unfortunately, each tomb entrance is locked with an iron gate, solidly sealed like an iron fortress. There’s no way in. · The most worth seeing is M3. While you can peek through the iron gate bars of the other tombs, M3 doesn’t even let you see the door. The tomb entrance is tightly sealed with sandbags to prevent oxidation and slow the murals’ weathering, so it’s closed long-term. It’s said to contain the earliest murals discovered in southern China—the eight-panel "Jing family banquet"—and Sichuan’s only ink-written Han clerical script inscription, recording the Jing family’s migration from the Central Plains to Shu. · Fortunately, before going, I saw a restored interior model of Taliangzi cliff tomb M3 at the Zhongjiang Museum. The murals and ink inscriptions were on display, so at least I could get a sense of the eight murals forming a grand banquet scene and the flowing brushwork of the Han clerical script. But the museum is a replica, and it’s not the same as standing inside the real tomb viewing the original murals. · Overall, the Taliangzi cliff tomb group is somewhat underwhelming to visit— all nine tombs are locked, and the most valuable M3 can’t even be seen through the door crack. The crane at the M6 entrance is the only consolation. Without prior research at the Zhongjiang Museum, you’d probably just stare at the iron gates on site.
