At the end of the road, a hill less than one square kilometer stretches across your view—this is Yanglu Mountain. So we picked a weekend, drove from Shenyang, took the Shenji Expressway for about 2 hours, and arrived at this green secret tucked in the Changbai Mountain foothills. Hemu National Forest Park is located in Yongling Town, Xinbin Manchu Autonomous County, Fushun City. It is a national AAAA-level scenic area. The park covers 1,367.85 hectares, stretches 7.5 km long, and its highest peak, Shihuadingzi, stands at 1,019.2 meters. It is the most botanically diverse garden in Northeast China and is known as a “natural oxygen bar.” ⛰️ Two routes, two experiences The park is divided into Line 1 (leisure and water activities) and Line 2 (mountain climbing challenge). Line 1 “winding path to tranquility”: stroll along the wooden boardwalk by the stream, fully shaded with minimal elevation gain. It’s perfect for kids to play in the water during summer, with many walnut trees along the way. Line 2 “crossing the natural barrier”: a true mountain climbing route, about 3,088 meters long with a total ascent of 558 meters. At the end of the Ming and the beginning of the Qing dynasty, three major Hezhe clans—Geyikele, Nuyiele, and Hushihali—lived here. During the Qing dynasty, the official name of this place was "Three Surnames," making it a famous frontier town in Northeast China. In 1905 (the 31st year of the Guangxu reign), Yilan Prefecture was established, adopting the abbreviated Manchu name as the official place name. After the founding of the People’s Republic, it was named Yilan County. Yilan is the "origin of the Jurchen people and the ancestral home of the Qing royal family," which enriched my knowledge and was another major gain from this trip. The Jianzhou Jurchens were the core tribe of the later Manchu people, and their earliest origin was in this area. Nurhaci’s sixth-generation ancestor, Menggetiemuer, known as the Qing dynasty’s founding ancestor, was born near the ancient Woduoli city in Madatun, Yilan. Later, the Woduoli tribe was forced to migrate southward over a long distance, gradually moving to eastern Liaoning. In 1583, Nurhaci raised an army with thirteen sets of armor to unify the Jurchens. In 1616, he established the Later Jin dynasty in Xinbin, Liaoning, laying the foundation for the Qing dynasty. Yilan County Museum also refers to Yilan as the land of dragon rise.

The Qing tomb, Qingfuling, is the mausoleum of Qing Taizu Nurhaci and Empress Xiaocigao of the Yehe Nara clan. It is located in Dongling Park, Hunnan District, Shenyang. Because it sits on Mount Tianzhu in the eastern suburbs of Shenyang, it is commonly known as Dongling. Construction began in the third year of the Later Jin Tiancong era (1629) and was completed in the eighth year of the Qing Shunzhi era (1651). It was later renovated multiple times during the Qing Shunzhi, Kangxi, and Qianlong reigns. Qingfuling, along with Qing Yongling and Qing Zhaoling, is known as one of the “Three Tombs beyond the Pass.” It was designated a national key cultural relic protection unit in 1988 and listed as a World Cultural Heritage site in 2004. Qingfuling backs onto Mount Tianzhu and faces the Hun River. The terrain slopes low in front and high in the back, stretching narrow from north to south. The main buildings are arranged along the spirit way as the central axis. From south to north, the site can be divided into the outer area outside the main red gate, the spirit way area, the square city, and the treasure city. The mausoleum’s architectural layout is complete, grand in scale, and well preserved. Qingfuling uniquely incorporates the “108 steps,” a feature not found in other Ming and Qing royal tombs, built to take advantage of the terrain. The layout and visitor route are described as follows: 1️⃣ Main red gate and spirit way (Figures 2–5) The tomb faces south with the main red gate in the center of the south side. The gate has a single-eave xieshan roof with three bays and three archways. On each side of the gate are glazed screen walls decorated with colorful cloud and dragon patterns. The spirit way starts at the main red gate and extends north to the Long’en Hall, measuring 566 meters in length. On both sides are pairs of stone camels, horses, tigers, and lions built in the seventh year of the Shunzhi reign. There is also a dismounting stele erected in the 49th year of Qianlong, originally two, located south of the main red gate. 2️⃣ 108 steps (Figures 6, 7) The main buildings of the tomb are all built on the base of Mount Tianzhu, while the main red gate and spirit way are on the flat land in front of the mountain. The 108 steps were built on the slope between these two areas. It is widely believed that the steps symbolize treading on the stars of the Heavenly Gang and Earthly Fiends. At each end of the steps is a divine bridge. 3️⃣ Stele pavilion and the stele of divine merit and sacred virtue (Figures 8, 9) The stele pavilion was built in the 27th year of Kangxi. In the center stands the stele of divine merit and sacred virtue, supported by a dragon pedestal. The inscription was commissioned by Emperor Kangxi and carved in both Manchu and Chinese, praising the life of Nurhaci. 4️⃣ Square city (Figures 10–16) Located behind the stele pavilion, this is the main architectural section of the tomb. The center of the square city is the Long’en Gate, with corner towers built in the 16th year of the Shunzhi reign at each of the four corners. Above the north gate of the square city is the Daming Tower, built in the fourth year of Kangxi. It faces the Long’en Gate and is the tallest building in Qingfuling. On the central platform inside the square city is the Long’en Hall, also called the offering hall. Built in the third year of the Later Jin Tiancong era, it is the main building of Qingfuling. It houses the spirit tablets of Qing Taizu Nurhaci and Empress Xiaocigao and serves as the central place for sacrificial ceremonies. Behind Long’en Hall is the Lingxing Gate. Behind the gate are the stone five offerings and a stone sacrificial altar in the shape of a Sumeru throne. Additionally, the square city contains east and west side halls used during ceremonies to store prayer tablets, make silk offerings, and chant scriptures for blessings. At the entrance of the west side hall is a white marble pavilion carved for burning silk offerings. 5️⃣ Crescent city, treasure city, and treasure mound (Figures 17, 18) To the north of the square city is the crescent city. The center of its north wall has a glazed screen wall, said to be the entrance to the underground palace. North of the crescent city is the treasure city, built with blue bricks. It has battlements on top and a female wall inside. In the center of the treasure city is a tall round mound called the treasure mound. The underground palace is located beneath the treasure mound.
