It might seem crazy, but this is one of the most peaceful places I’ve ever been to. 2km next to Aso volcano I’ve experienced silence, which I’ve never heard before. We’ve started our one-day trip from Fukuoka. 8am Shinkansen train took us to Kumamoto. There is a bus (which runs once a day lol) to Aso Volcano. It took almost 2 hours. We got off at the final station and began our trekking route. We didn’t reach the top of mountains next to Aso, but did our best to enjoy this magnificent view. It took us about 2-3 hours to climbed the mountain and came down. Then at 4pm we took the same bus back to Kumamoto station and train to Fukuoka. Thank you Japan for such rich nature and stunning views🍃🤍 #japan #japannature #volcano

Visiting Mount Aso in Kumamoto, Japan, is an experience that makes you realise just how powerful and beautiful nature can be. This is not an ordinary mountain – it is one of the world’s largest volcanic calderas, with dramatic landscapes, vast green fields, volcanic smoke, and breathtaking panoramic views.

What impressed me most was the incredible contrast between the peaceful countryside and the raw volcanic landscape. Everywhere you look, there is something spectacular: endless grasslands, rolling hills, distant mountains, and the feeling of being surrounded by nature on a completely different scale.

One of the highlights of the area is Kusasenri Grassland. Walking across this beautiful open landscape, with horses grazing in the distance and mountains surrounding the horizon, feels almost unreal. It is a perfect place to take photographs, enjoy the fresh mountain air, and simply appreciate the scenery.

Another fascinating stop is the Aso Volcano Museum, where you can learn about the geological history of the volcano and understand the incredible forces that shaped this region.

My personal travel tips:

· Rent a car if possible. Having your own transportation makes exploring the Aso region much easier.
· Visit Kusasenri and allow yourself enough time to enjoy the scenery rather than rushing through.
· Wear comfortable walking shoes, as some areas have uneven volcanic terrain.
· Bring a jacket, even on sunny days. The weather can be quite different at higher elevations.
· Check the volcanic alert level and crater access information before your visit. Mount Aso is an active volcano, and access restrictions can change.
· Never cross safety barriers or enter restricted areas.
· Keep a safe distance from grazing horses and respect the surrounding nature.
· Bring some snacks and water, especially if you plan to explore the walking trails.

Important note for travellers: The Nakadake crater access has been subject to restrictions due to volcanic activity. As of the latest information available for November 2026, Kusasenri remains accessible, while the crater area is restricted. Always check the official updates before travelling.

Mount Aso in Kumamoto was even more beautiful than I expected! I went in November, and the weather was around 5-6 degrees Celsius – perfect! It was like a romantic drive with my boyfriend; a little bit of solitude, warm sunshine, a cool breeze, and stunning views along the way. Oh, I'm falling even more in love with Japan! If you come in the evening, I recommend watching the sunset; the sky is incredibly beautiful. Grab a hot drink from a vending machine, hold it, and sip it – pure bliss! #fukuoka #aso #kumamoto #japan
