Visit Ranzhuang in Baoding, Hebei, and touch a piece of the extraordinary past buried beneath the loess. This is the setting that inspired the film "Tunnel Warfare," a village that forged a legendary epic of people's war. Inside the exhibition hall, artifacts bearing the marks of time are quietly displayed. Rusty homemade guns and landmines, old farm tools, and daily necessities silently tell the story of the war-torn years. Through historical photos and reconstructed scenes, look back at the resistance journey of the soldiers and civilians in central Hebei. In those days, the flat plains offered no natural defenses, so the people relied on their own hands. Starting from simple hiding holes, they dug out an underground "Great Wall" that extended in all directions. Step out of the exhibition hall and enter the actual tunnel ruins. The tunnels are low and damp, and in some sections, you must bend over or turn sideways to move forward. Stoves, troughs, and wells are all cleverly disguised tunnel entrances. Traps, peepholes, checkpoints, and underground rest areas—layer upon layer of hidden mechanisms reveal ingenious designs, creating a tactical miracle that allowed for fighting, hiding, attacking, and defending. The 16-kilometer-long tunnel network connected every household and village. Relying on this, soldiers and civilians fought 157 battles, fiercely repelling enemy sweeps and leaving behind the enemy's lament: "We would rather go around Heifengkou than pass through Ranzhuang." The ancient village above ground still retains the appearance of the 1930s and 1940s. Old locust trees stand quietly, and the mottled walls still bear the shooting holes of the past. Every brick and tile is engraved with the marks of resistance.
