Liqiao Shuizhen

Liqiao Shuizhen is a historic water town located in Yi'an District, Tongling City, Anhui Province, China. It was established during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, has a strong Huizhou style, and displays the typical charm of a southern water town. The history of Liqiao Shuizhen can be traced back to the Ming Dynasty, when local tribute students such as Zha Fengxiang led the construction of a bridge named Li Pa (or Liqiao), hence the name Liqiao Shuizhen. In the Qianlong version of the 'Tongling County Chronicles', there is a detailed record: 'Li Pa Bridge, located south of Renfeng Zhongwu and north of Zaixing Wu, spans the big river between the two towns, and was initiated by tribute student Zha Fengxiang and others.' The 'big river' here refers to the Zhongcang River that Liqiao spans, and 'town' refers to Liqiao Shuizhen. Historically, due to the convenience of water and land transportation, Liqiao Shuizhen gradually developed into a prosperous water town market, attracting many businessmen to do business, making various industries and chambers of commerce gather here. However, with the passage of time and the development of modern transportation tools, the traditional waterway transportation advantage is no longer obvious, and the commercial status of Liqiao Shuizhen has declined. Fortunately, in recent years, this region has begun to implement a rural revitalization strategy, thereby regaining vitality. As for the architectural style of Liqiao Shuizhen, it is a typical representative of the Ming and Qing Huizhou style, full of ancient charm. Walking along the old street, you can see the elements of flying eaves, pink walls and black tiles, and horse head walls, which are typical features of Huizhou architecture. In addition, there is a royal gift 'Kejia Shijia' archway, these buildings are to show the historical and cultural heritage of Liqiao Shuizhen.
