KASH LAWRENCE

Enshi is great, but I won't come again next time

That's impossible. After seeing Enshi in winter, I'm even more captivated by the thought of how green and beautiful it must be in spring and summer. It's no wonder that 'National Geographic' rated it as 'the most beautiful place in China.' The cliffs are stunningly perilous, the mountain streams crystal clear, and the caves vast and mysterious. On Day 3-4, I went to 1) Tenglong Cave and 2) Luyuanping. 1) Tenglong Cave was on the way because I planned to trek the ancient Qingjiang riverbed. I happened to have a ticket that allowed me to enter for FREE, saving the 150 yuan entrance fee. I visited with a 'since I'm here, I might as well' attitude, and it exceeded my expectations. I had forgotten to check the reviews, which were mixed, but as someone who loves trekking, I found it to be an interesting spot. There's a distance from the visitor center to the scenic area. The center will ask if you want to buy a ticket for the scenic area shuttle. If you're driving, you can totally drive in yourself. I chose to walk in and take the sightseeing car back (round trip 10 yuan). Inside the cave, it felt like an adventure of tomb raiding. The overall visit was less than two hours and fairly relaxed. 2) Luyuanping has cliffs and precipices, a high-altitude plank walkway, crevasses, and waterfalls. It's less crowded, and the area is quite large. I hiked down to the bottom of the mountain to the junction of the crevasse/waterfall. With limited time, I chose to explore the crevasse (the natural scenery is recommended), took the magic carpet up the mountain, and the elevator back to the top, which took about 2.5 hours in total. The three-day trip to Enshi ended with a self-drive of 701km. I recommend self-driving to tour Enshi because the attractions are quite scattered and far apart. You can start early at around 8 am and begin visiting the attractions before 11 am. Avoid the tour groups by traveling at off-peak times. Wait for the large groups to arrive after you've left, and you'll perfectly avoid the crowds.
