PIPER HUBBARD

Junya Ishigami's new work in China: At the Water Art Museum, huge yet gentle

In the development zone of Rizhao City, Shandong Province, China, there is a super cool building that has a super harmonious relationship with the environment! This building is like bringing the environment closer, making the boundary between the building and the environment super blurred, and transforming nature into something super friendly to us humans. This is the best part of this project! The building is a complex facility with exhibition, visitor center, shops and other functions. It is currently exhibiting chocolate and related themed artworks, but the content of the exhibition can be freely changed in the future, isn't it cool? The site of the building is on an artificial lake near the entrance of the development zone. People can pass through this building first and then go to the development zone. Its building area is about 20,000 square meters, extending from one end of the lake to the other, about 1 kilometer long, almost the same length as the diameter of the lake! The building extends lightly on the lake, as if it is quietly extending with the lake. The transparent plane of the lake is introduced into the building. On the unwalkable water surface, it seems to smoothly extend a piece of ground from the water surface, like a new land! The evenly spaced columns establish a new water surface, and this water surface produces a new ground. A new 'outside' is born from the inside of the building! This new nature generated from the inside of the building, like an internal environment infiltrating the external environment, is a large landscape. Imagine the feeling of walking in it: some places are spacious land, with exhibits arranged on it; some places are narrow land, surrounded by a wide water surface; some places have high roofs, which can introduce more light and surrounding scenery; some places have low roofs, the ceiling is reflected on the water surface, and at the same time, the low light seems to crawl in from the water surface and reflect on the ceiling. It's simply wonderful! Everyone must go and see it when you have the chance!
