When visiting Lake Toya, guidebooks always recommend seeing the fireworks, but I must honestly say: the fireworks are so-so, and you can actually skip them. Rather than the fleeting touristy excitement at night, I'd much rather recommend the underrated healing experience during the day. My favorite spot is Lake Hill Farm, perched high above the lake. This is the true soul of Lake Toya, Hokkaido. Away from the crowds by the lake, order an ice cream made with local milk, and casually sit on the endless green grassy slopes. Before you lies the magnificent Mount Yotei, the "Ezo Fuji," where all kinds of life flourish. The rich, creamy flavor fills your mouth, and the grass sways gently in the wind beside you. Here, time stands still, and the air is sweet.
