Foguang Temple

Foguang Temple is located 32 kilometers northeast of Doucun Town in Wutai County, Shanxi Province, within the Foguang Mountain (on the west foothills of the southern peak of Mount Wutai). It was originally built during the reign of Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty (471–499 AD). It was rebuilt in the eleventh year of the Dazhong era of the Tang Dynasty (857 AD). The temple currently has more than 120 halls, pavilions, towers, and chambers. Among them, the East Great Hall has seven bays and is a Tang Dynasty construction; the Manjusri Hall also has seven bays and is a Jin Dynasty construction, while the rest are from the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The Tang Dynasty architecture, sculptures, murals, and inscriptions of Foguang Temple have high historical and artistic value. On March 4, 1961, Foguang Temple was announced by the State Council of the People's Republic of China as one of the first batch of national key cultural relics protection units.
