Lüneburg, located in northern Lower Saxony, Germany, about 50 kilometers south of Hamburg, has a population of approximately 80,000. It is a salt-producing city and a Hanseatic city with over 1,000 years of history. During the Middle Ages, salt was known as "white gold," and Lüneburg accumulated wealth through its abundant salt resources and trade, becoming a member of the Hanseatic League in 1381 and developing into an important trading city in northern Germany. Today, Lüneburg's Old Town preserves a large number of historical buildings; red-brick gables, wooden houses, and narrow streets create a distinctive northern German urban landscape. Am Sande in the city center, the historical town hall (Rathaus), and the old crane (Alter Kran) on the banks of the Ilmenau River are all representative landmarks.
