A Christmas Treasure Hunt in the UK 🎁🎄
Every year from the end of November, the streets and alleys of Britain seem to fall into a Christmas fairytale. That day, I only intended to buy a Christmas card, but ended up standing in front of a shop window for half an hour. Mickey and Minnie sat in a glittering sleigh, surrounded by piles of gifts; little penguins wearing beanies stood quietly holding fairy lights; Pluto and Donald Duck dressed in Christmas costumes, as if getting ready for a winter party. These decorations weren't cheap, and they weren't necessarily practical. But Christmas is never about practicality. It's about a particular winter, a particular person, and a joy you want to bring home. Living in Britain for a while, you'll find that many families have a habit. Adding a new Christmas decoration every year. It might be a snowball, a reindeer, or a music box. One story per year. Ten years later, when you take it out again, what you've collected isn't just decorations, but memories. Perhaps that's the most touching part of Christmas. Comfortable Stay in a Great Location
Stayed here for three nights with my husband using points, aiming to explore Reading—and we did! The hotel is in an excellent location. We loved the view from our room, though it can be slightly noisy, but most people settle in by around 11 pm. Breakfast was fantastic, a delightful perk, especially the full English breakfast. While there's no elevator, it wasn’t an issue for us since we were in room 117. A refrigerator would have been a nice addition, but overall, we enjoyed our stay and had good sleep in the bed.
Reading Museum: through glass!
Not only does Reading's Museum have free admission... and not only does it have Britain's Bateaux tapestry... but I always notice something new! I popped in to relax after work today and really enjoyed this new exhibit from the Reading art foundation I think Chris Day's glass sculptures are on view for Black History Month, check them out if you can! they take inspiration from traditional African shields but in a surreal way are made of glass. I found a lovely connection between these and the Murano glass from Venice originally collected by the museum to inspire local artists in the Victorian period Always worth a visit 💕

Walking slowly along the country lanes, across golden meadows, I could see the spire of St. Mary the Virgin Church in the distance. The wind was gentle, the sky a deep blue, and everything before me was as serene as an oil painting. It's hard to imagine that this tranquil field beneath my feet was once one of England's most bustling ancient cities. Two thousand years ago, Roman soldiers entered and exited the city gates; merchants hawked their wares on the cobblestone streets; applause and cheers echoed from the theater; the markets sang with the aroma of bread and spices. Today, the prosperity has faded, leaving only the ancient city walls covered in grass and the sleeping amphitheater. Standing before the ruins of the ancient Roman city, I closed my eyes, as if I could still hear the distant sound of approaching hooves. Silchester's most captivating aspect isn't its magnificent architecture, but the belief it inspires: history has never left. It simply lies quietly in the wind, waiting for the next traveler to listen. Head to the Reading and Leeds festivals in August to experience top-tier rock performances. Lawns packed with music lovers, energetic stage melodies, and evening breezes carrying cheers create an unforgettable summer experience full of freedom and passion. Tips for your visit 1. Tickets, entry, and age rules 1. The 2026 event runs from Aug 27 to Aug 30, held simultaneously in Reading and Leeds. Single-day ticket holders cannot re-enter after leaving. Weekend camping wristbands allow multiple entries and exits. 2. Minors 15 and under must be accompanied by a ticketed adult 18 or older at all times. Children under 13 enter free. Alcohol sales require ID verification for anyone 25 or younger. Be sure to bring an original passport or driver’s license; photocopies are not accepted. 3. Tickets are sold exclusively through Ticketmaster. Tickets purchased from resale platforms risk being invalid and denied entry. Buy cautiously. 2. Bags and prohibited items 1. Only small bags no larger than A4 size are allowed at the main venue. Large bags must be checked in, which may cause long security lines. There are no bag size restrictions in the camping area. 2. Prohibited items include glass containers, sprays over 250 ml, drones, disposable grills, speakers, laser pointers, knives, skateboards, large quantities of canned gas, and fireworks. Only guide dogs are permitted inside. 3. Beverage rules: Unopened soft drinks under 500 ml and empty water bottles are allowed. Free drinking water stations are available on site. Bringing your own alcohol into the performance area is prohibited. 3. Camping and venue hours 1. Regular weekend camping opens at 3 AM Thursday. Early bird ticket holders can enter at noon Wednesday. All camping areas must be cleared by noon Monday. 2. The performance area is open daily from 11:00 AM to 12:30 AM. On Thursday, the stage opens only at 5 PM. 4. Safety and travel tips 1. August in the UK is often rainy. The large grassy areas can get muddy after rain. Bring waterproof jackets and non-slip rain boots. Temperatures vary greatly between day and night, with cooler nights, so pack a light jacket. 2. The venue has 24-hour medical stations, lost and found, and mental health support points. If you experience harassment or feel unwell, seek help from staff wearing reflective vests. 3. Minimize valuables. Tents have no locks and documents can be lost. Prescription medications must be kept in original labeled packaging for security checks. 4. Open flames are prohibited inside the venue. Only small compliant gas stoves are allowed in designated camping areas. Gas devices are strictly forbidden inside tents to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.
Fantastic Day Out at Beale Wildlife Park
Visited Beale Wildlife Park & Garden on one of the hottest days of the year so far. Unsurprisingly, it was almost empty, likely due to the intense heat and the fact it was during school term time. The park is absolutely wonderful, with stunning gardens, ponds, lakes, and more. There are play areas for kids of all ages, a refreshing paddling pool, and the café offered much-appreciated air conditioning. The animal enclosures were well-maintained and housed a great variety of fascinating species. Sadly, the train was not operational. Entry is reasonably priced at £15 per adult. Overall, it was a thoroughly enjoyable day.

The park itself doesn't have many Lego elements, but the UK section of Miniland is exciting and detailed. The unique rides have a typical wait time of 70 minutes; a Fastpass is recommended. The Souvenir shop is small and surprisingly has a queue, so we didn't go in.

A beautiful place to visit. It's only a short walk from the train station. The ruins of a 1,000 year old abbey are a peaceful place to walk in and explore. Right next to the Forbury garden, where you can have a picnic 🧺
