The ruins of this ancient Roman city, preserved by volcanic ash, are simply awe-inspiring. Walking through the streets where people lived 2,000 years ago was surreal! You could still see frescoes on the walls, mosaics on the floors, and even remnants of daily life like shops and houses. The highlight for me was the Forum and the view of Mount Vesuvius in the background. It’s crazy to imagine how life was here before the eruption. The Amphitheatre was another incredible spot—standing there, I could almost hear the crowds. Plan for at least 3-4 hours to explore; it’s massive, and there’s so much to take in. Nearby, you can also visit the ruins of Herculaneum, or make a day trip out of climbing Mount Vesuvius itself, which is only about 30 minutes away by car. I went to the ruins of Pompeii, a 30-minute train ride from Naples, a city in southern Italy! The town was destroyed by a volcanic eruption about 2,000 years ago, but it is well preserved and many historical buildings can still be seen in beautiful condition. 2,000 years ago is the Yayoi period in Japan, but in the Roman Empire, architectural technology was quite advanced, and I was impressed by the high level of technology. I definitely recommend watching a movie about Pompeii before visiting the ruins 😊

In the morning, after having breakfast, I walked to Naples train station and took a local train to Pompeii. Today, I will go to see the damage and the remains of ancient Roman civilization at Pompeii. From Naples, there were so many passengers that I had to stand all the way to Pompeii Scavi station. From here, I can walk to the archaeological site of Pompeii. On the way, I saw Mount Vesuvius, the cause of the tragedy that caused Pompeii to collapse. This train line also runs along the coast. Some people get off at stations along the way. I enjoyed the view of the volcano and the orchards that thrive on the volcanic soil until I got off at the end of the line. The weather was clear. There were a lot of people on the way there, but it was comfortable on the way back. The seats were empty. The train didn't need air conditioning, but it wasn't hot either. I could almost sleep on the way back.

Naples is Naples, and defiantly so, all old-world knowledge and new-world energy with back-alleys peppered with laundry and markets brimming with sweet-smelling local produce. #holidayitinerary Visiting the ruins at Scavi archeologici di Pompei was like stepping straight into history. The place is massive and super easy to get lost in, but that’s part of the fun. We just wandered through the old streets, trying to imagine what life used to be like before the eruption. Some of the houses still have original frescoes and mosaics, which was pretty wild to see up close. It’s not one of those sites where everything is behind ropes, you can actually walk through doorways and into open courtyards. The vibe is peaceful in some spots, almost eerie in others, especially around the plaster casts. We didn’t join a tour or anything, just followed the map and took our time. Bring water and comfy shoes though, it’s a lot of walking. Honestly, Pompei surprised me with how well preserved and huge it is. It’s definitely worth a few hours of casual wandering if you’re anywhere nearby.

The Blue Grotto is a must-see destination in southern Italy. The colors are truly fantastic, but the sun is really hot waiting for you... But it's worth circling the island. Next time I have the chance, I'd like to spend two or three days on the island.
