#Asahiyama Zoo Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in Apr)
Checking in at Asahikawa, a small and beautiful city! Attached is a guide to Asahiyama Zoo
🐧The city tour of Asahikawa starts with a morning penguin walk at Asahiyama Zoo. In the early morning, the Asahiyama Zoo covered in white snow is quiet and serene, and the waddling emperor penguins take a leisurely walk around the park, their adorable appearance causing visitors to lower their voices in constant admiration.
☃️Asahiyama Zoo is the northernmost zoo in Japan, with a history of 50 years. It has penguins, polar bears, box horses, red-crowned cranes, giraffes, etc. The areas are relatively concentrated and can be basically completed in half a day. The scenery is unbeatable after the snow.
📌Zoo tour tips
🎫Ticket: 1000 for adults
⏰Time: 10:30
🚌Transportation: There is a direct bus to the zoo from JR Asahikawa Station, about 40 minutes by car. We stayed at Hoshino OMO7 Asahikawa Hotel. There is a free shuttle bus to and from the zoo every day, which is very convenient
🐧Penguin walk 11:00/14:30 twice a day, it is recommended to go to the walkway 15 minutes in advance. The feeding times of other animals are written on the signs in the park, you can pay attention to the set time
Winter tour pay attention to keep warm, anti-skid, parents should take care of children. There is a fast food restaurant at the entrance of the zoo, offering simple meals, ramen and so on.
🏨We stayed at Hoshino OMO7 Asahikawa Hotel, where there is a city walk guided by a guide every day. Followed the OMO Ranger to explore Asahikawa's 57 alleys and Paris Road in the evening. The former is a food-filled alley where you can eat Asahikawa's three soul foods: soy sauce ramen, grilled new child, and salt-grilled large intestine. The latter Paris Road mainly serves Japanese Western cuisine, which is very stylish!
💡Asahikawa is not big, Hoshino OMO7 Asahikawa store is well located, convenient transportation, and it is the tallest building in Asahikawa, with a first-class view. The public space in the store is reasonably divided, the atmosphere is relaxed and pleasant, there are rich activities every day, and it is extremely fulfilling and comfortable just here.
🍹The hotel has a full-fledged welcome drink, free hot springs, free snow gear care area, reading area, and different content sharing sessions in the evening. You can supplement your knowledge about Asahiyama Zoo here first.
🍧Hoshino OMO7 Asahikawa's limited edition seven strawberry ice cream and ramen ice cream are very creative and full of creativity. Don't miss it if you like it~ Asahikawa travel is enough for one day, but two days are more relaxed~😄
The itinerary for this trip to Hokkaido is very reasonable, convenient and time-saving!
1⃣ First stop: Asahiyama Zoo to watch penguins
In the morning, head to Asahiyama Zoo. The penguins walk at 11 am, so you need to arrive and buy tickets in advance. Take a 1.5-hour express train from Sapporo Station, and choose the 8 am train. After arriving at Asahikawa Station, immediately go to platform 6 and take the 9:40 bus from Asahikawa Station to Asahiyama Zoo, which takes about 40 minutes and costs 500 yen. After arriving at the zoo, buy tickets and queue up to enter, it is expected to be around 10:30. Then go to the penguin walking route, find a good photo spot, and wait for the penguins to appear.
2⃣ Second stop: Lonely Christmas Tree.
After watching the penguins, please be sure to enjoy a bowl of hot ramen near the main exit of the zoo (make sure to choose the main exit). The restaurant is in the park, do not leave the park. Then, prepare to take the bus from the zoo to Asahikawa Station (the bus stop is in front of the main entrance of the zoo). You can check the bus schedule on Google Maps, we chose a bus around 12:10. After arriving at Asahikawa Station, take the Furano Line to Biei Station, which takes about 1 hour. Once you arrive at Biei Station, use Google Maps to search for "クリスマスツリーの木" (I tried English search and it didn't work), and follow the navigation for about 20 minutes to arrive. The scenery along the way is very beautiful, just like what you see in pictures 2 to 5, you can take pictures while walking. It is recommended to arrive at the Christmas tree before 2:30 in the afternoon, because taking pictures may take a lot of time, and it gets dark very early, so you must ensure that there is enough time to return to Biei Station to catch the return train. The train intervals in this small rural area are relatively long, so you need to arrange your itinerary based on the train time on Google Maps (we chose a train around 4 o'clock to return to Asahikawa Station, and then return to Sapporo from Asahikawa). Please pay special attention: all transportation card points need to be checked and confirmed on Google Maps to match your itinerary!

Xushan Zoo
🌟In winter, Hokkaido is very windy, blowing painfully on the face. The sky is also filled with fluffy snowflakes. Get up early to go to Asahiyama Zoo to see the penguins. They waddle out so cute. There are also furry little raccoons, whose big tails can be used as scarves. Just looking at them makes you feel warm.
🌟Seals or sea lions, I can't tell them apart. They always seem to have a smiling expression, but I can't tell if their eyes are open or closed. Sometimes they swim happily, and sometimes they float quietly on the surface, basking in the sun. They look so relaxed, but I wonder if they're sleeping. I always feel like animals without fur protection must be cold, while animals with fur protection must have cold feet.
🌟In order to get a close look at polar bears, the zoo designed curved glass windows that protrude from the ground. A big brother stuck his head out and took non-stop photos under the bear's butt, which was really funny. But if you want to see brown bears, you still have to go to the Showa Shinzan Bear Ranch, which has 100 purebred Hokkaido brown bears located at the foot of the mountain. The ticket has a picture of a little bear catching fish. The ranch divides the bear areas by age group, and there is food for sale at the entrance. Brown bears are very intelligent, holding onto the iron bars with their paws, their small eyes turning and chattering, especially clever.

The Asahiyama Zoo is a municipal zoo that opened in July 1967 in Asahikawa, Hokkaidō, Japan, and is the northernmost zoo in the country.
Penguins are one of the zoo's most popular animals. You can walk through underwater tunnels as they swim overhead. In winter, everyone waits for the penguin walk, when they waddle along outside of their enclosures in front of the crowd like a tiny army.
Exploring an exotic ‘ecosystem’!
Despite the freezing weather, with the icy wind biting at every inch of my exposed skin, I can say that I had an amazing time at Asahiyama Zoo! I cannot recommend this zoo enough, from its wide variety of enclosures to the insightful information that the zookeepers had shared, especially during the Penguin Feeding Time. Sadly, me and my family had missed the famed Penguin Walk, which is the talk of the town and the only reason that we had ventured to the zoo in the first place. However, I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of fun that I had even without watching cute penguins scuttling around with their webbed feet. Definitely a must-go if you were to visit Asahikawa!
Penguins catwalk show
This is Asahiyama zoo located in Asahikawa, Hokkaido prefecture. There are buses to the zoo from Asahikawa station and it takes approximately 45 minutes to reach. The marching event are held twice daily at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m during December till around mid-March when the snow starts to melt. The penguins are so cute! It was so cool to be able to watch them in such close proximity >.< Of course, there are also other animals to visit!

To Hokkaido in winter, Asahikawa is a must-see. The most famous attraction in Asahikawa is the Asahiyama Zoo. The most popular attraction for the Asahiyama Zoo is the penguin walk. There is one at 11 am every day and one at half past two in the afternoon.
The whole penguin walk is about half an hour. Once you enter the zoo, you can see the place where you can watch the penguins take a walk. It doesn't matter where you line up at the beginning. The penguin keeps going until you get back. Your own "home", follow the pace of the penguin to move your position, you can definitely find a good position to watch and take pictures.
In addition to penguins, Asahiyama Zoo and polar bears, raccoons, deer, giraffes and other animals, watching animals in the snow and ice, is also a special experience.
The decoration in the zoo is very love, the material is photographed everywhere, even the vending machine is also animal-themed, so cute, foul!
➡️About tickets: Adults 820 yen
➡️ About admission time (specifically see the official website)
summer: April - October 9
In the past, when talking about Japan's most famous zoo, people will naturally mention the Ueno Zoo in Tokyo. Today, when it comes to the most popular, it is the Asahiyama Zoo on the outskirts of Asahikawa, Hokkaido, Japan, the northernmost zoo in Japan. As the Asahiyama Zoo, in addition to a variety of common animals, there are also creatures in the cold northern regions such as seals and polar bears.
Transportation: Take the Asahikawa Electric Rail Bus from Asahikawa Station and arrive at Asahiyama Zoo in 40 minutes. Tickets are 440 yen. The station is on the side of Asahikawa Station. We bought the ticket for the zoo + snow village at the station in advance, 1800 yen, free for children. The zoo opened at 10:30 and counted the time on the road. We went to the station at 9:00, and there were already many people. The 20-minute bus on the Internet was not. When it was full, it was driven away, and then immediately. Connected to the first, the zoo said that it opened at 10:30, in fact 10
Trip to Asahikawa Asahiyama Zoo
This zoo is the northernmost zoo in Japan and is very famous within the zoo community, just like the Hongshan Forest Zoo in Nanjing, it creates the most suitable living environment for the animals. It allows visitors to see the animals' habits in a state close to nature, which is also the aspect of modern zoos that I personally prefer, also known as the enrichment of animal environments. The animals here are different from those in Nanjing in that there are relatively more polar animals living in Hokkaido and the north, including seals, penguins, wolves, polar bears, Ezo deer, Hokkaido flying squirrels, sea eagles, etc. The design of the venues also shows thoughtfulness, for example, the polar bear pavilion has a pool where you can see the polar bears fishing underwater, and the seal pavilion has specially built pipes for the seals to swim up and down. In addition, the zoo has a very popular penguin walking event in winter, where you can see the penguins moving forward step by step along the snow path outside. Another thing is that many of the zoo's introductions are hand-drawn by the staff, which is very thoughtful. If you like animals, this is definitely a must-visit spot.
Asahiyama Zoo's admission fee is 1,000 yen, which can be purchased together with the bus ticket at the bus ticket machine at Asahikawa Station.
Winter business hours are 10:30-15:30
Transportation: Take the No. 41 or 47 bus from the No. 6 boarding point in front of Asahikawa Station and get off at the terminal station. The fare is 500 yen.
Asahiyama Zoo, a family paradise in Hokkaido (Penguin Walk)
How can you miss Asahiyama Zoo when you're in Hokkaido? Apart from the unique snow season species resources, the overall experience of touring the zoo is also very well done. For example, you can watch hippos from a 360-degree angle without any blind spots, both on land and in water; the zoo's star attraction, the penguin walk, happens twice a day; and there's also the experience of peeking at polar bears from underground tunnels. Along the way, apart from being a bit slippery, the rest of the experience is quite nice.
Cutest penguins walk ever!
Asahiyama zoo is one of the best zoo experience I ever had, maybe because it’s during winter and everything just look extra nice! My favourite part of the zoo is the penguins parade, they are so cute!! They are the biggest penguins I’ve ever seen!! It’s so tall and fat and cute, I like how they walked in rows during penguins walk and the penguins walk lasted for about 10-15 mins, so you will definitely see it if you come at 11:30 am!
There are also many animals that I’ve only seen for the first time, like red raccoon dog, reindeer and Hedwig owl. Oh yea, and if you’re a Harry Potter fans, you can’t missed to see Hedwig here, it’s a beautiful white owl in a big cage, it’s so cute!!
The bears are huge as well, glad that they were all quite active when we were visiting! It’s about slightly less than 2 hours drive from Sapporo, you can get the day your package from Sapporo, I’ll recommend this place if you love animals!
Asahiyama Zoo with King Penguins parade
The zoo is very cold in the morning, especially when you wait outside and line up for the opening. Highlight of the zoo is the popular penguin walk that happens at 11:30am and 2:00pm. Fun to watch the penguins as they walk. There are vending machines and cafes inside. If you smoke, there are designated smoking areas. Can be accessed by direct bus from Asahikawa station. Tickets can be bought same day before entering, 1000 yen for adults.#Asahiyama
Asahiyama Zoo
#thingstodo A small zoo with the penguin walk being a major highlight. If you take the bus from JR Station, recommend taking the 930 one or earlier cause the lines are so long waiting for the bus, you might not make it to the first bus if you are aiming for the 11am parade. Buy your ticket ahead of time in the building ! The returning bus is not as frequent.
it is hard to get a view as people all start to line up for it.
The zoo has some slippery areas and coin lockers.

Memorable zoo experience in the snow!
Asahiyama zoo is well worth a visit, spend half a day there, catch sight of penguins marching by, beautiful animals like leopards, Tigers, snow owls, Hokkaido native animals and many more! Children visit for free, so value for money. we had lunch there and also purchased a large photo (free small photo per group) to support the zoo 😀
Asahiyama Zoo
#thingstodo It was a winter trip to the zoo, hoping to experience the Penguin walk but sadly the event was closed. But we did see the penguins up close and it goes the same for other animals.
Please be prepared as they weather gets really cold. So gloves, heatpacks, scarfs/mufflers are a must!! Lots of snow and ice on the grounds so do walk slowly and when it got too cold, we escaped into any of the animal enclosures or washrooms for some warmth from heaters.
Not all animals are out during winter but was enough to spend 2 - 3 hours just watching them and taking photos/video.
Driving there was easy as there were signs leading to the zoo with traffic ushers for the parking. Tickets were easily bought at counter. Many vending machines with hot drinks/canned soups. There was also a cafe and restaurant. Gift shop sold cute items and biscuits/snacks with pretty zoo themed packaging.
We enjoyed ourselves especially at the penguin and fierce animal enclosures. We are considering to return in spring or summer!
5 things you must know when you come to Asahikawa, Hokkaido!
When it comes to Hokkaido, many people will talk about Otaru.
But compared to Otaru, I love another romantic place in Hokkaido full of snow - Asahikawa
/
First thing: 'About Asahikawa'
Asahikawa City is the second largest city in Hokkaido after Sapporo.
The east side of Asahikawa City is dominated by Daisetsuzan, and the south side is Biei and Furano, known as tourist attractions.
JR lines, roads, highways, etc. are connected in the city, making it a transportation hub.
/
Second thing: 'Main attractions'
1, Asahiyama Zoo:
The most famous and popular place in Asahikawa, the northernmost zoo in Japan.
Especially the penguin walk, loved by locals and tourists!
2, Ramen Village:
Asahikawa Ramen Village, born in August 1996.
Here you can not only experience the ramen culture of Asahikawa, but also taste the local special ramen!
3, Snow Art Museum:
The Snow Art Museum is an art museum themed on snow. The exterior of the museum adopts the style of medieval Europe, which is especially like the ice and snow castle in the real version of 'Frozen'.
4, Daisetsuzan National Park:
The park covers 2,267 square kilometers, the largest park in Japan, and the highest peak in Hokkaido, 'Asahidake', is part of Daisetsuzan.

The time is 2 and a half hours, and the cost is 2500 yen.

The most recommended is of course to choose a hotel near Asahikawa Station, which is more affordable.
2, Food:
There are several large shopping malls around Asahikawa Station, and there is a long street where food is gathered.
/
Fifth thing: 'Play tips'
1, Because it is further north, the temperature is lower than Sapporo and Otaru, and the snow is thicker!
2, Pay attention to the check-in and check-out time of the hotel, most of them are check-in after three in the afternoon and check-out before 10 in the morning.
3, Pay attention to anti-skid, the temperature is lower, the road is more slippery, be careful!

The beautiful sight is worth the hassle of putting on all the layers and layers of winter clothing! A hot cup of tea taste and feel just so different in winter!its wonderful! Asahiyama Zoo is about two hours drive from Sapporo city. We went without much expectation but was blown off our feet when we were there! The animals, the snow capped huts, the entire zoo took us the whole day! It is definitely worth the visit. Do not miss the penguin match and seal feeding! Looking forward for more winter holidays! Canada it's the next country i want to go to! ♥️

Asahiyama Zoo is a top rated Hokkaido zoo which is just outside central Asahikawa City. It has become famous as it draws out the natural ecology and behavior of animals and incorporating it into the "behavior display" method.
There are many visitors visit the Zoo every day to see the lively animals and it has become a destination of choice with visitors abroad.
Many animals are located at the foot of the mountain to the middle area, so enter via the front gate or west gate will be more convenient. There are no free parking lots available only private paid parking lots.
It gets crowded over the weekends and summer holidays, so it is easier to secure parking space at the east gate. Therefore, most of the group tour will use the east gate.
Best time to visit is in the morning and a higher chance to see energetic animals. Be sure to check the feeding time of the animals.
The address is Kuranuma, Higashiasahikawa-cho, Asahikawa-shi, Hokkaido, 078-8205.
I wish to go Vancouver!

Do you know how beautiful Hokkaido in Japan is?
I am very happy to write a detailed travelogue for you to visit Hokkaido, Japan. Hokkaido is the northernmost island of Japan, famous for its beautiful natural scenery, fresh food, and warm culture. In this travelogue, I will introduce how to plan and arrange an unforgettable trip to Hokkaido for you.
Day 1: Sapporo City
After arriving at New Chitose Airport, we took the JR express train to Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido. After checking into a hotel in the city center, we went to Tanukikoji Shopping Street, one of the busiest commercial streets in Sapporo. There are all kinds of shops, restaurants, and cafes here. We tasted the local specialty sweets "potato cake" and "milk yokan", which were very delicious.
Day 2: Otaru City
We rented a car and headed to another famous city in Hokkaido - Otaru. This small city is known for its historic buildings and beautiful canals. We strolled around the famous Otaru Canal and Xingye Night Market, and also tasted local seafood dishes. In the evening, we returned to Sapporo and experienced the local nightlife.
Day 3: Asahiyama Zoo
As one of the most famous zoos in Hokkaido, Asahiyama Zoo is home to many animals from the Arctic Circle, including polar bears, penguins, and sea lions. We participated in the "Polar Bear Walk" activity and saw the lively and cute polar bears running in the snow. In addition, we also relaxed in the nearby hot spring hotel and soaked in the hot spring.
Day 4: Furano City
We rented a car and headed to Furano City in Hokkaido, which is famous for its beautiful flower fields and scenery. We enjoyed vast fields of lavender and other flowers at the Furano Flower Fields Park. In addition, we visited local vineyards and tasted delicious wine and grape juice.
Day 5: Hakodate City
We took the JR express train to Hakodate in the southern part of Hokkaido, where there are magnificent ports and coastlines. We visited Mount Hakodate and the night view of Hakodate, which is one of the world-famous night views. We also bought local specialties and handicrafts at the Hakodate Red Brick Warehouse, which was very interesting.
Day 6: Tourist train
We took the luxurious tourist train "Hokutosei" in Hokkaido, returning from Hakodate to Sapporo. This was a very luxurious train journey, where we could enjoy the magnificent natural scenery of Hokkaido. In the evening, we participated in a local traditional music and dance performance, which was very exciting.
Seventh day: Japanese hot springs
We decided to enjoy Japan's hot spring culture on the last day. We went to a hot spring resort in Hokkaido, where we enjoyed delicious food, hot springs, and massages. It was a very relaxing and enjoyable experience that made us feel rejuvenated.
Day 8: End of the journey.
We returned to our hotel in Sapporo, packed our bags and checked out. Then we took the JR express train back to New Chitose Airport, ending this unforgettable trip to Hokkaido.
Summary
Hokkaido is a place full of natural scenery and cultural characteristics. During this trip, we tasted local cuisine, enjoyed magnificent natural landscapes, experienced hot spring culture, and participated in local traditional cultural activities. I strongly recommend everyone to travel to Hokkaido. It is an unforgettable experience where you will gain many wonderful memories.
Winter in Hokkaido zoo! Watch polar bears, penguins, reindeer at this local zoo in winter wonderland. Also, watch the cute penguins March at certain timings.
Must visit in Hokkaido!
Heading to Hokkaido during winter? U must visit Asahiyama Zoo in Asahikawa. The mogu mogu time, penguin parade happens daily (unless penguins are unwilling to come out or due to poor weather) at 11am and 2.30pm local time.
See the penguins waddle their way out of their enclosure, and walk around the zoo and finally they march back into their enclosure. The penguins are super close up but safe from humans as their keepers are there to guide them in case they wander off. Sometimes they speed walk through sometimes they walk really slowly, it’s completely up to them.
Super unique experience!
4-day trip to Hokkaido, experiencing the snowy scenery of the north ❄️, outdoor hot springs in the snow (Toyohira River Hot Spring ♨️), night view of Otaru Canal, penguins 🐧 taking a snowy walk in Asahiyama Zoo, and the terrace of the forest elves in Furano.
PS: The most important thing is the seafood feast at Sapporo Seafood Market 🦀️🦐🐟, Hokkaido's Genghis Khan grilled lamb. Huimei also made Shiroi Koibito cookies by herself.
Fall in love with Hokkaido, see you next time 👋👋

Asahiyama Zoo @ Located in Higashi Asahikawa, Hokkaido
Animals are happily playing in the snow. Weather was -6 degree and yet little penguins are happily roaming around.
This zoo is not located near Sapporo so a ride around 2 hours is required .
The zoo have ranges of cold weather animal. It also has other range like tiger , giraffe. But be in Hokkaido one will want to see the cold range type of animals such as penguin and polar bear.
Penguins are just so cute. One of the tourist dropped the glove and penguin tried to flip the glove . Recommend to visit if your own country doesn’t snow
