Castel Sant'Angelo, Hadrian's Mausoleum
#visitrome
Castel Sant'Angelo, also known as the Castle of the Holy Angel, is commissioned by Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself. It was usually used by Pope's as castles and fortress. In the beginning of 14th century, the Pope used this castle as his residence. Pope Nicholas III connected the castle to St Peter's Basilica via a fortified corridor. It is also used by several Pope's during the sacking of Rome as an escape route from Vatican. Today, it serves as a museum after it's decommissioning in 1901. Connected directly to the castle is the bridge of the Angel's where several remarkable angel statues erected along the bridge leading to the castle.

Time-travel in Rome
Castel San't Angelo (Mausoleum of Hadrian) is one of the must-visit places in Rome. I would definitely recommend first-time traveller to include this site in the itinerary.
It is easy to spot it among the buildings in Rome because of its imposing and towering cylindrical shape, located exactly eastwards from the Vatican City. This is a building that has witnessed so much changes that have been happening in Rome throughout the history. While visiting the Castel, it is as if you are time-traveling from the Roman Empire to the modern days. Originally built as the mausoleum for the Roman Empire, it also served as a fortress, palace and prison. Even the Popes used to live here!

Great old castle, nice placement near the Tiber river. The view is gorgeous, especially at sunset since the Basilica of St. Peter can be seen in the background. Also, the pedestrian bridge over the river is a romantic place with people that play slow songs on the guitar. We did not enter because the castle was closed, but it was pretty crowded so I suppose you should get tickets in advance if you want to visit the inside. #境外遊

Of course, when you visit Rome, you should spend a day exploring the Vatican City. After visiting the Vatican, we also visited the Mausoleum of Hadrian, also known as Castel Sant’Angelo and enjoyed some spectacular views of Rome. This is a fortress located on the right bank of the Tiber, a short distance from the Vatican City. The building was initially commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family and was finished finished in the year 139. It was later used by the popes as a fortress and castle, and is now a museum. Make sure you go to the top of the castle to enjoy some spectacular views.

Checkinaway (@checkinawayblog) The magic of Lungotevere in Rome: The unmissable places to admire at sunset ❤️
There are many great architectural works that overlook the Tiber, among which many make Rome "great".
The Tiber is the water vein of the capital, for millennia it has told legends and acts as a silent sentinel to the city Caput Mundi.
So if you are in town my advice is to come here at sunset and admire:
- Sant'Angelo castel
- The Church of the Sacred Heart of Suffteggio
- The Palace of Justice, called by the Romans: Palazzaccio
- And finally see the sun go down over the horizon with the Skyline of San Pietro, from Ponte Umberto I.
What is your favorite spot?

Castel Sant'Angelo is a must-see attraction to Rome. St. Angel's Fort is a mausoleum built on the banks of the Tiber River. It was designed and personally produced by the Roman Emperor Hadrian (Hadrian) in the 2nd century AD as his own and his successor. The resting place. Centuries have passed, and Castel Sant'Angelo has undergone some changes: first as a fortress to stop the invasion of the Visigoths and East Goths, then as a prison, and finally into a magnificent papal palace. Now a national museum, in addition to the collection of stuccoes, frescoes and pope's residential furniture, ancient weapons are also an important precious collection here.
The Holy Angel Bridge across the Tiber River in front of Castel Sant'Angelo is the most beautiful bridge in the city of Rome. There are twelve statues of angels on the bridge. Each angel holds the same torture instrument as Jesus. The angels are from the hands of Bernini.
Sant'Angelo is at the western end of the ancient Roman region. There are several bridges leading to the west bank of the Tiber River. The more important one is the Emmanuel II Bridge and the other is the famous bridge to Castel Sant'Angelo (Ponte). Santa Angelo). The bridge designed by Bernini can be said to be a masterpiece of Baroque decorative art, but the statues of the angels on the bridge, two or two of which were hand-carved by Bernini, have been moved to the Santa Adrea delle Fratte church to be preserved. Place two copies on the bridge.
Castel Sant'Angelo is an important scene in Dan Brown's famous novel "Angels and Demons", where the Illuminati is gathering in secret.
Although the main characters in the film have now passed away, they are left with a timeless classic. Roman holiday is far from being felt in a day. This romantic city is always worth your while to remember.
The ancient buildings of hundreds of years, the magnificent historical monuments, the museum's dazzling array of artistic treasures, because of the intensive appearance, too late to appreciate, they hurried away.
