[2025 Tokyo Attraction] Travel Guide for Hie Shrine (Updated Mar)

This is one of the most unforgettable snow scenes I've ever seen! Because of the scene in Your Name where Taki stands in front of the "Hida" photo wall in the museum, I remember this mysterious landlocked area deeply. Gifu Prefecture has a rustic name, but it is not only the filming location of Your Name, but also a world heritage fairy tale town, and snow as dreamy as Hokkaido! The key is - there are not many people! . Your Name pilgrimage: Mainly concentrated in Hida Takayama and Hida Furukawa, you can travel back and forth by JR or bus. ⛰Takayama: The old town of Machiya, which retains the Edo style of 400 years ago, has mostly been turned into restaurants, cafes, etc., and it is very interesting to visit! Magome-juku, back to Edo: This is the only way to connect Kyoto and Tokyo in the 17th century, built on mountain roads, steep terrain, rickshaw horses really can't cross, so they have to leave the horses at the station, hence the name. It takes about 2 hours from Tajimi City, but the snow scene on the mountain road is really spectacular! Step into the snow on the cobblestone path of Magome-juku and admire the Edo houses on both sides. It seems to take me back to that era. . My 4-day itinerary: DAY 1: Beijing - Nagoya - Tajimi City DAY 2: Magome-juku - Ena Gorge - Taisho Village DAY 3: Hida Takayama - Hida Furukawa - Hida Takayama DAY 4: Shirakawa-go - Nagoya - Beijing (Ena Gorge is generally personal, no need to go on purpose) . Transportation: Direct flights from Beijing to Nagoya, and then transfer through JR + Meitetsu Bus, you can use the Dragon Ascent Road Pass, there are different routes for three days and five days. . There were multiple escalators connecting to the top. The view from the escalator was amazing. Enter through the Hie shrine sanno torii which is where the escalators are. We also tried the other entrance on the other side, the other one consists of many stairs. There are also many interesting installations in the area. One of them resembles Fushimi Inari in Kytoto. The Tori gate is very popular. There was a queue of people waiting to take photos. There was even a photo shoot going on. #Japantravel #100waysoftravel

#meettokyo One of the most beautiful shrines in Tokyo. This shrine is very photogenic especially near the stairs with the red torii gates behind the shrine(different from the main entrance). They have an outdoor escalator towards the main entrance(of course you can take the stairs too). I highly recommend to visit here if the stairs doesn't bother you. Lovely shrine hidden in the hustle and bustle of the city. The monkey statues throughout are worth a visit!

Hie Shrine feels like a secret getaway hidden in the middle of Tokyo’s busy streets. The most magical part? The tunnel of red torii gates leading up to the shrine—it reminded me of Fushimi Inari in Kyoto, but with way fewer crowds! Walking through the gates felt like stepping into a different world. The shrine itself is gorgeous, with bright red details and peaceful surroundings. It’s said to bring good luck, and many people visit to pray for success in work and relationships. I also spotted a lot of cute monkey statues, since monkeys are considered sacred here. If you visit in June, there’s a huge festival with colorful floats! After exploring, I walked to Akasaka for some delicious sushi. Hie Shrine is perfect if you want a quiet, spiritual spot with beautiful photo opportunities—it’s one of Tokyo’s hidden gems!

The date of establishment of the Hie Shrine is uncertain. According to one theory, Ōta Dōkan established it in 1478. Another theory identifies the Hie with the Sannō Shrine mentioned in a 1362 record of the Kumano Nachi Taisha. Tokugawa Ieyasu relocated it to the grounds of Edo Castle, and in 1604 his son Tokugawa Hidetada moved it out, so the people of Edo could worship there. The shaden was lost to the Great Fire of Meireki of 1657, and in 1659 Tokugawa Ietsuna rebuilt it at its present location. If you have little time but want to see rows of torii gates, you don't have to go all the way to Kyoto. Come here and finish everything. A shrine that is famous for good luck, children, and love. It can handle all relationships. If you don't believe it, you have to try it. ⛩ Toyokawa Inari, a fox temple, is full of fox statues. It is located in the same place as Hie Shrine. We traveled there in 2024 late August, we went there around 9-10am and it was not crowded so we could take so many good pictures! I recommend you to do the same if you want to enjoy the place more! It’s super pretty😍 📸 I think if you were something white will make your pictures look better because of contrast. (Nothing colorful)

#Tokyo Attractions Walking into the historic Hie Shrine in Tokyo is like entering a painting of a Japanese shrine full of mysterious Zen. Passing through the bright red Torii gate is a deep and winding path to the shrine. The road is lined with lush, ancient trees that create a green atmosphere for the road. Walking up slowly along the stone steps, you can hear the natural sounds of flowing water and rustling bamboo leaves from time to time, which together with the lush fern and herbaceous vegetation planted along the road form a natural forest scenery. The higher we go, the fresher and cooler the air becomes, with a unique and refreshing scent of mountain phytoncides.

#thingstodo Entry to the shrine is free. The shrine is located in the city center, but has many greenery surrounding it. The map of the temple is provided in the photos. As shown in the map, there are 2 entrance - one that leads you to the red Tori gates while the other one leads you to the temple directly. You will have to climb up flights of stairs at the Tori gates, while at the other entrance, they have escalators up and down at both sides of the stairs. Really a safe saver. In 🇯🇵, the way to pray or worship is to make a bow and then throw the money into the offertory box. Bow twice, clap your hands twice and then make another bow deeply Locals come here to pray for blessings in love, success and prosperity.

If you don’t have time to visit Kyoto to see the famous Fushimi Inari Shrine and the red torii gates, don’t worry because you can find something similar in Tokyo at Hie Shrine. Plus the torii gates here are actually a much easier place to photograph without tourists in the way. If you visit on the weekend, you will likely find many local families with children dressed in their kimonos taking photos. What’s nice is that although this shrine is becoming more popular with foreign tourists, there are still definitely more locals here. The shrine is free to visit and although it opens at 6am, there are no gates so technically you could visit the grounds at any time. There are several sets of stairs to reach the shrine, but it is also accessible via an escalator from the main street below or via car. If you only have time to visit one shrine in Tokyo, I would recommend Hie Shrine to see the tunnel of 90 red torii gates. #Japan #Tokyo
