Meizhou Huake Building | The "Number One Round Building in Guangdong" hidden in the deep countryside
As is well known, Meizhou is one of the typical Hakka cultural gathering places in Guangdong, adjacent to Zhangzhou and Longyan in Fujian, where many Hakka cultural heritages are scattered, and the Weilou (earthen buildings) are part of them.
Huake Building, with a history of over 400 years, is an all-wood structure, identical to the Fujian earthen buildings, and is known on the internet as the same type of building as in the movie "Big Fish & Begonia". I first came to photograph it four years ago, and at that time, it was already in a state of being uninhabited and unrepaired, but fortunately, there were still villagers guarding it, allowing it to remain intact to this day. On my recent visit, it seemed to have received more protection, probably because the village has started to consciously carry out preservation work.
If you want to visit the Huake Building for a Guangdong version of Big Fish & Begonia, you still need to be mentally prepared:
-There is no public transportation or bus service from Meizhou city center to this place, you need to drive or take a taxi or join a tour group, which takes about 1.5 hours, be careful on the mountain roads, as they are quite narrow, and you need to drive cautiously;
-Generally, you are not allowed to go above the second floor, because the wood is old and has not been repaired or replaced, which is quite dangerous, meaning that photography can only be done on the first floor, and those who can should bring a drone;
-The surrounding area is a village with no other attractions, and there are few farmhouses, so it is advised to make your own dining arrangements.

Secluded Primitive Attraction: Meizhou Huake Building
Huake Building, hidden in Lianfeng Village, Dadong Town, Dapu County, Meizhou City, Guangdong Province, has a history of more than 410 years. It was built in the 36th year of the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty (1608), resembling the calyx of a flower. It is a Hakka-style circular fortified building and is the most completely preserved earthen round building.
This is a Hakka earth building in Guangdong.
Behind the Huake Building is the Tiger-shaped Mountain, and in front is the Meitan River, with beautiful scenery. The Huake Building covers an area of 2,300 square meters, with a construction area of 2,286 square meters. It is a circular building made of earth and wood structures, with three floors distributed in a circular ring shape. The first floor has 30 rooms, the second floor has 60 rooms, and the third floor has 120 rooms, totaling 210 rooms, with a height of 11.9 meters.
After the owner Lin Yuanyu built this earthen fortified building, he took in all the villagers who had no houses to live in.
The architectural style of the Huake Building is similar to the earth buildings in the neighboring county of Pinghe (Zhangzhou, Fujian), which are both unitary and have internal corridors, combining the characteristics of both Southern Fujian and Hakka earth buildings.
This is a Hakka earth building known for its pebble stones!
The public ground of the Huake Building is almost 100% paved with pebble stones. These pebble stones have been trampled and polished for more than four hundred years, covered with a layer of patina from the years, and their luster is like beautiful agate.
Currently, the earliest discovered round earth building with a clear chronology is the Qiyun Building. Qiyun Building was built in the 18th year of Wanli (1590).
Next to the entrance of the Huake Building, there is a standing stone embedded in the wall, inscribed with 'Wanli Zhu Yongtuo Beach Year Xuan Yue Li'.
'Wanli Zhu Yongtuo Beach Year Xuan Yue' refers to 'September of the Wanli Wushen year', which is the 36th year of Wanli (1608). According to this, it is known that the Huake Building was built only 18 years later than the Qiyun Building. Such an ancient round earth building, even in Fujian, can be said to be one of the earliest.
The Huake Building is located at the junction of Guangdong and Fujian, near Zhangzhou, Fujian. Between the overlapping mountains, the mountain roads are winding, but fortunately, the road conditions have now been improved, making self-driving more convenient.
This is a very worthwhile place to travel and explore the history of the Hakka people.

On the third day of the Lunar New Year, come to Hua'e Building to see the unique New Year blessings of the Hakka people
There are thousands of Hakka customs, and the Spring Festival and Lantern Festival account for the majority💫
Dear friends, Happy New Year! On the third day of the Lunar New Year, I went to the Hua'e Building in Daqiutian Village, Dapu County, Meizhou to participate in a grand New Year blessing event, which was super lively! What excited me was that the folk style here is unique, and even the ceremonies and decorations are full of rich Hakka flavor, it's really interesting!💃
First is the ancient and solemn 'incense procession' ceremony. Early in the morning, the elders dressed in traditional costumes carried the statues of gods, while the young people and children held colored flags, accompanied by a drum team, forming a long procession. We paraded around the village, constantly ringing music along the way, and the villagers bowed respectfully and prayed to the gods. This part is called the 'incense procession' ceremony, it's like a mobile temple fair, so lively!🎉
Then comes the most important 'Kouxu' ceremony. After the parade, the whole village gathered in the Hua'e Building to prepare for 'Kouxu'. In the chanting of the clan leader, we prayed for blessings according to traditional ceremonies. Everyone worked together, hoping that the new year would be smooth and peaceful, families harmonious, and everything prosperous. The entire Hua'e Building was filled with a festive atmosphere, you will definitely be attracted by the long Eight Immortals table! There are offerings of chicken, rice cakes, and wine, it's really lively!😍
By the way, Hua'e Building is the largest round house in Guangdong, usually a scenic spot! But three days before and after the blessing event, no tickets are needed, remember to plan your trip in advance! If you drive there, just search for Hua'e Building and you'll find it, very convenient!🚗
In short, the New Year blessing event I spent in Hua'e Building was great! The unique charm of Hakka customs and the vibrant atmosphere made me deeply feel the joy of the Spring Festival and the strong festive atmosphere. You should come and experience it next time! Remember to plan well, arrange your trip in advance, and don't miss this rare opportunity!🎊
