Wat Chedi Luang in Chiang Mai, Thailand
Wat Chedi Luang, like Wat Phra Singh, is one of the most popular temples in Chiang Mai. This temple is also known as the 'Great Pagoda Temple' because of the tall and majestic pagoda inside, although it is now in ruins. Wat Chedi Luang is a place with many stories. Not only does it have a large pagoda and the 'City Pillar' of Chiang Mai, but it also once housed the precious Jade Buddha, which is now worshipped in Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok.
Like Wat Phra Singh, the origin of this temple is also a burial place built by the Lanna King Saen Muang Ma for his father. The king wanted to make the pagoda bigger and stronger, but it was still not completed when the king died. The king's widow continued the king's will, and during the reign of King Tilokaraj, the pagoda reached a height of 82 meters, making it the tallest building in Lanna at the time. However, the good times did not last long, and the top of the pagoda collapsed in a major earthquake in 1545.
Ancient Temple - Wat Chedi Luang

Thailand has loads of temple situated all around the country. One popular temple called the Wat Chedi Luang located in the north of Thailand in changmai: 103 Prapokkloa Rd, Tambon Si Phum, Mueang Chiang Mai District, Chiang Mai 50200, Thailand is one of the oldest temple which dates back all the way to the 14 century.
The build of the temple is remarkable, especially back in the olden days where there isn't any machinery. This is definitely one amazing marvel ever built. Due to the ongoing refurbishments an entrance fee is required to enter in the grounds of the temple. Also, do remember to wear covered pants covering below your knees as this is still considered a scared ground.
Wat Chedi Luang: Earthquake vs. Temple
In the heart of Chiang Mai’s old town is a testament to the enduring legacy of Buddhism in Thailand.
Despite enduring the wrath of a 1545 earthquake, the main building of Wat Chedi Luang has stood for nearly 700 years. Admire how the disformed roof and exposed brick have persevered through centuries of conflict and erosion.
Elsewhere in the complex, explore the beautiful traditional architecture and reclining buddha, hallmarks of Chiang Mai’s oldest and most renowned temple.
A Day of Exploring in Chiang Mai, Thailand🇹🇭
Chiang Mai, Thailand🇹🇭
Itinerary:
• Woke up to sleeper train & put bags in hostel
• Went for breakfast at Sunday Bakery
• Visited Wat Chedi Luang Temple
• Shopped around Chiang Mai
• Had lunch at Gravity Cafe
• Went to visit the silver temple
• Had a beer
• Went to Chiang Mai Saturday Night Market
We woke up at 5am, on the turbulent sleeper train, to the sunrise in Chiang Mai. It was an experience that I am so grateful for.
We headed to the hostel and woowww, this hostel is so serene and beautiful - it truly lives up to its name:( @hiddengardenhostel ).
Our favourite adventures so far are the temples. Wat Chedi Luang was an incredible sight, originally beginning construction in the 14th century, the temple resembles ancient ruins.
We were shocked at how many good shops there were around Chiang Mai- lots being very modern, selling beautiful handmade items.
We visited the completely silver covered temple & then sat and had a Chang Classic beer, as we people watched at a local bar.
Finally, after a little rest at the hostel, we delved into Chiang Mai’s Saturday night market & had street food (I had mushroom vermicelli noodles & a banana, Nutella pancake) - what a brilliant day :)

Wat Chedi Luang Temple Chiangmai
This temple is located in the heart of Chiangmai. We took a red public transportation from Tha Phae gate and paid 30 baht per person. This temple is stunning, as evidenced by the photo. The entrance fee for adults is 50 baht. There are numerous other temples nearby that are only a short walk away. 💚#mytripvlog
Midnight Prayers
Every year Wat Chedi Luang is hosting Overnight prayer event on December 31st. In my opinion, it was the best place to do overnight prayer in Chiangmai. There were seating on all side of the pagoda, plenty of chairs available. In the beginning, they would allocate prayer books so it was easy to follow the prayer. At the end, the would give small amulets to everyone. The setting was incredibly charming. The pagoda itself was beautiful. It was such a spiritual event after all.
Entrance Fee: Free
Parking: limited on the street
spectacular Wat Chedi Luang at Night.
Wat Chedi Luang is a Buddhist temple in the historic centre of Chiang Mai, Thailand. The current temple grounds were originally made up of three temples — Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Ho Tham and Wat Sukmin. The ancient chedi is the most obvious reason why the temple is so well-known. The chedi itself is over 700 years old and is located right in the heart of the moat of Chiang Mai. For most of history, it was the tallest structure in the city. The structure is protected from the public, meaning kids or adults cannot climb up the stairs or on it.
every single night the temple complex is lit up in all of its splendor. Strategically placed lights cascade a golden sheen throughout the complex creating wonderfully warm and subtle tones.

“the great Wat Cheri Luang of Northern Thailand”
Wat Chedi Luang's premise are several structures of great cultural significance, including the city pillar (Intakin), main wiharn housing the principal Buddha image and a giant gum tree guarding the temple’s entrance. according to ancient Lanna beliefs, the city pillar is erected at the epicentre of the city, to mark the centre of the universe, which in the past was the Lanna Kingdom. dwarfing the city pillar shrine is one of the three gum trees believed to protect the city from all ills. legend has it that if this tree ever falls, a great catastrophe will follow.

This is a temple that is rich in history. There is the Inthakhin Pillar Vihara temple which unfortunately only men are allowed to enter (ladies are not allowed to enter because they believe the women's menstruation affects the sanctity of the temple) but it was not a big turn off as there are a lot of other things to see. What some people would miss while looking at the blingy Buddha statues are the relics left of the high ranking monks.
#GiveThanks
This temple’s area was so huge. Located in old town Chiang Mai, this place was always busy. You need to buy a ticket first then you can come inside the temple. It was a freaking hot, humid day. So if you want to find peace, you can come inside the temple, sit down, and just be quiet. It actually cooled me down.
Chedi Long Temple, also known as the Great Buddhist Pagoda Temple, is the most noble temple in Chiang Mai with the Pasin Temple. The tall Lanna style stupa built in the temple was built in 1441 and was destroyed by an earthquake in the 16th century, but it is still the most magnificent building in Chiang Mai.
Spiritual Serenity: Wat Chedi Luang Journey
#songkran2024
Visiting Wat Chedi Luang in Chiang Mai was a journey through time and spirituality. As I approached the temple grounds, I was immediately struck by the grandeur of the towering chedi, its ancient bricks standing as a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of Thailand.
Stepping through the intricate gateways adorned with mythical creatures and ornate carvings, I entered a realm of tranquility and reverence. The air was thick with the scent of incense, and the sounds of chanting monks filled the sacred space, creating an atmosphere of deep spiritual resonance.
Exploring the temple complex, I marveled at the intricate architecture and exquisite craftsmanship of the buildings and statues that adorned the grounds. From the majestic main chedi to the serene meditation halls, every corner of Wat Chedi Luang was a testament to the devotion and skill of the artisans who created it.
But perhaps the most awe-inspiring sight was the ancient Buddha statue housed within the temple. Towering over the faithful with its serene expression and golden hue, it exuded an aura of peace and enlightenment that was palpable to all who gazed upon it.
As I sat in quiet contemplation beneath the shade of a centuries-old tree, I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to something greater than myself. It was a moment of profound spiritual insight, a reminder of the timeless wisdom and universal truths that lie at the heart of all religious traditions.

Have you visited the temple that houses the city pillar of Chiang Mai?
The temple of Wat Chedi Luang (Temple of the Great Stupa), I personally think, is the most beautiful temple in the Chiang Mai city area. It attracts a lot of visitors, and rightfully so, as it was built in 1411 and features an 85.4-meter-tall Lanna-style stupa. Even by today's standards, it is an imposing and spectacular structure. It is surrounded by railings, allowing visitors to only look from a distance. If you zoom in with your phone's camera to the maximum, you can faintly see the Buddha statue sitting in the niche at the top, enduring nearly a thousand years of wind and rain, witnessing the world's vast changes.
In addition to the tall stupa, there is also a mysterious temple hall with the sign at the entrance stating, 'No Women Beyond This Point.' Why is that? After reading the introduction, I learned that this is the 'city pillar' of Chiang Mai, which has traditionally forbidden women from entering, whether for visiting or praying, regardless of whether they are foreigners or locals, government officials or ordinary citizens. This is a matter concerning the city's stability and fate, so it must not be taken lightly. Respect their culture, and let's hope that beautiful Chiang Mai remains peaceful forever!
Stroll through Chiang Mai slowly, and step into Wat Chedi Luang
🌟 Highlights:
Wat Chedi Luang is probably the largest temple in the old city of Chiang Mai, featuring typical Lanna-style architecture. The main hall is grand and resplendent with gold, and once inside, you can sit on the floor. Despite the crowd, it doesn't feel noisy at all. The most famous part of the temple is the ancient and majestic great stupa, surrounded by many Buddha halls. These buildings with ethnic characteristics, nestled among the tropical plants of Southeast Asia, form a beautiful picture. Walking slowly around the great stupa, a sense of antiquity hits you, accompanied by the clear sound of wind chimes, adding to the tranquility and simplicity.
✨ Temple Highlights:
✅ As you enter the temple, there is a small hall on the side with a sign stating that women are not allowed inside. The reason for this is that the hall enshrines the city pillar of Chiang Mai - the Inthakin City Pillar. According to Chiang Mai legend, the Inthakin City Pillar was built by the god Indra for the stability of Chiang Mai, and the pillar serves as a reminder to the people to adhere to the Five Precepts of Buddhism. The people of Chiang Mai believe that the city pillar represents the prosperity and happiness of the city, and it is sacred and inviolable. Therefore, to this day, women, especially those in their menstrual period, are considered impure and are not allowed to approach. The hall is not large, but all four walls are adorned with exquisite murals. Apart from this, there is no such distinction in other areas of the temple.
✅ The Buddha statue at the entrance of the main hall allows visitors to buy gold leaf to stick on it, or to find and stick on their own zodiac sign.
✅ The tall and majestic stupa offers a massive visual impact. This great stupa is the oldest structure in the temple. After the 1545 Chiang Mai earthquake, the top of the stupa collapsed overnight, so what you see now is a flat top. Walking around and admiring it, each angle offers its own magnificent view.
The stupa has stairs on only one side, and on the south side of the stupa, there are six elephant sculptures, five of which were rebuilt later, with only the one without a nose and ears being the original.
🎫 Ticket Information:
Tickets are 40 Thai Baht, open from 06:00-18:00.
🚉 Transportation Tips:
The temple is located at the southern end of PhraPokklao Road in the old city of Chiang Mai. Generally, those staying in the old city or nearby can walk there.

Chiang Mai—a place you don't want to leave once you arrive.
Unlike the hustle and bustle of Bangkok and Pattaya, Chiang Mai offers a sense of tranquility and laziness. It's also a place beloved by Teresa Teng. Strolling through the city streets, one can't help but wonder if 'The Story of a Small Town' was written about here.
Hotel: Stayed at the Imperial Mae Ping Hotel, where Teresa Teng once stayed, saw the swimming pool, but unfortunately forgot to bring a swimsuit.
Attractions:
Wat Chedi Luang (Temple of the Big Stupa), a landmark of Chiang Mai, unlike most of Thailand's glittering temples, Wat Chedi Luang's architecture has a weathered and historical feel, inspiring awe after years of weathering.
Doi Suthep-Pui National Park, Twin Dragon Temple, from where you can overlook the entire city of Chiang Mai. It is said to house the relics of the Buddha Sakyamuni. Found super cute little monk statues and exquisite murals.
If I have the chance to visit Chiang Mai again, I hope to stay a little longer and explore more of its delicious food and beautiful scenery.
The place Teresa Teng loved the most is also where her soul rests, the small town in the song 'Small Town Story'
Chiang Mai was Teresa Teng's favorite city, and it is also where her spirit returned. She passed away at the Mei Ping Hotel, and many Chinese people visit there to pay their respects.
Chiang Mai is in the northern part of Thailand, and compared to Bangkok, the girls in the north have fairer skin and are taller, almost similar to Chinese people. At the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, locals enter for free, and when we visited the temple, they didn't recognize that we were not locals, so they let us in to visit for free.
Chiang Mai is not big, but it has a lot of temples; there is one every ten steps. After visiting so many temples, my favorites are the Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. Wat Chedi Luang is in the city area, with an ancient and simple style. Picture four is a huge stupa at Wat Chedi Luang, which is very spectacular. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is on a mountain on the outskirts of the city, with a temple that is glittering with gold, dazzling to the eyes.
Transportation in Chiang Mai is quite convenient, with the main mode of transport being the songthaew. You can take a songthaew to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. Within the city, it's best to rent a motorcycle for yourself, allowing you to stop and go as you please, and visit any temple you like at any time.

Wat Chedi Luang | Serenity and Distance
Wat Chedi Luang, also known as the Great Buddha Stupa, is located right in the center of Chiang Mai's old city. Wat Chedi Luang is the largest temple in Chiang Mai and one of the most famous, sharing the highest rank with Wat Phra Singh.
Transportation:
🐽 If you are staying within the old city of Chiang Mai, you can walk to the temple. If you are staying outside the old city, you can take a tuk-tuk or a taxi.
🐉 Wat Chedi Luang is a typical Lanna-style architecture, consisting of the main hall, small Buddha halls, and monk quarters, all very exquisite. The most eye-catching feature is the central stupa, which is damaged, known as the Great Buddha Stupa, the iconic structure of Wat Chedi Luang.
In fact, this stupa, which is a mix of Indian and Sri Lankan styles, was originally 98 meters tall and was once the tallest building in northern Thailand. Unfortunately, a major earthquake struck Chiang Mai in 1545, causing the spire of the Great Buddha Stupa to collapse overnight, revealing the golden Buddha statue inside. During the Thai-Burmese wars of the 16th century, the Great Buddha Stupa was damaged again, and now only about 60 meters high remains.
🐒 Although it was restored in 1992, since there were no precise records of its original construction, no one knows the exact structure of its upper part. Therefore, today's Great Buddha Stupa only has its base remaining. Even so, it is still the tallest structure in Chiang Mai.
Address: 103 Prapokkloa Rd, Tambon Si Phum, Amphoe Mueang Chiang Mai
Admission: 40 Thai baht for adults
Opening hours: 6:00-18:00
Note: Shoes must be removed before entering the temple.
Does China have such a large pagoda?
The upper part of the pagoda at the Great Buddha Temple was destroyed by an earthquake, but the volume of the base is still quite astonishing. I can't think of any place in our country that has a pagoda of such a large size. The Liao Pagoda? It's not that big either.
Among the six large elephants, the only genuine one has lost its trunk and ears, which looks somewhat comical.
There is a small museum. All these cabinets are for storing scriptures.
But the most conspicuous is undoubtedly the city pillar at the entrance, which is said to be the sacred protective pillar of Chiang Mai, erected by the king who founded the city in 1296. Women are not allowed to enter this small hall, for fear of undermining the efficacy of the sacred pillar and causing 'social instability' (original words).
There are many murals inside the small hall.

Historical Wat Chedi Luang in Thailand
Wat Chedi Luang is epic in scale and famous for its colossal chedi, standing over 300 feet tall and can be seen from many parts of Chiang Mai's Old Town. In the Thai dialect, Luang means 'big'.
Wat Chedi Luang is also one of the few temples in Chiang Mai that charges an entry fee for foreign tourists, it's a fraction of the price to pay to see such an amazing temple-entry is 50 baht per person.
Wat Chedi Luang was built in the fourteenth century. It was too tall that's why it didn't survive properly, an earthquake that hit Chiang Mai. The ruins were restored by UNESCO in the 1990s and today it is open for viewing.

Loy Krathong Splendor at Wat Chedi Luang
Bathing in the moonlight, Wat Chedi Luang - one of Chiang Mai's most revered temples - played host to an unforgettable spectacle during Loy Krathong, the Thai 'Festival of Light'. The ancient temple, with its grandiose chedi, was the canvas for a vibrant performance that brought the festival's spirit alive.
As darkness fell, the temple's grounds filled with the soft glow of thousands of krathongs (floating lanterns) and the air was charged with an air of reverence and joy. The main event was a mesmerizing traditional dance performance, an ode to Thai culture, with dancers in traditional attire moving in harmony to the rhythm of the music.
The night sky then blazed with a spectacular laser light show, illuminating the historic chedi in a riot of colors. The fusion of tradition and technology created an enchanting spectacle, etching an indelible memory of Loy Krathong at Wat Chedi Luang.

Chedi Luang Temple, located in the center of the ancient city of Chiang Mai, was built in 1411. Its main body is the largest stupa in Chiang Mai, so it is also known as the Great Pagoda Temple. This mixed Indian and Ceylon-style pagoda was originally 98 meters high and was once the tallest building in northern Thailand. However, due to the earthquake, artillery fire and lightning attacks of the Thai-Myanmar War, only the 42-meter-high tower base remains today. And the first floor, but for hundreds of years, it is still the tallest building in the ancient city of Chiang Mai.
Although more than half of this stupa has been destroyed, and the incomplete part is also full of scars and mottled scars that have been eroded by natural wind, when you can stand in front of this ancient pagoda and see its beauty, you still feel You can feel its majesty and solemnity, and you can't help but have a deep reverie about the era when it was born.
Thai Bodhi Zhenru Temple 🇹🇭
We arrived at the Bodhi Zhenru Temple in Loei Province, Northeast Thailand two days in advance. At that time, Master Longpo was preaching the Dharma abroad, and we spent two days with the local Chinese lay Buddhists and monks who received us. To our surprise, everything is well organized in the huge monastery with nearly a thousand acres of land. Although no one imposes any management and constraints, everyone is doing their own things in the most appropriate way. Every morning, everyone would come to a listening venue built with thatched sheds to listen to the master's lectures; when the master was away, they would listen to his recordings.
Start your day with a free breakfast
After listening to the Fa, everyone will have a free breakfast. This breakfast was spontaneously prepared by lay Buddhists and monks in the temple. All the food and food are provided by people from all over the world. Everyone has no preset position on whether to eat well or how much to eat. After everyone has eaten with the common tableware, they will go to the pool, follow a strict cleaning and disinfection procedure, wash each tableware, wipe it and put it back in its original place, and then start a day's life.
We were lucky enough to receive a lot of very fresh fruit and food during our stay. Every day, several monks from the temple enthusiastically came to our residence and prepared a lot of meals and fruits for us. We felt very embarrassed. And these monks didn't care about it, they just said that your blessings are very good, eat it when you come, and put it down after eating it, forget about it, don't worry about it.
