To Singaporeans, Sir Tom Stanford-Raffles is a very familiar name. He has made considerable efforts and monumental achievements in opening up, building and long-term planning, making Singapore an important commercial port from a backward fishing village. His name and image are deeply etched in the minds of many Singaporeans to this day, and many buildings and institutions in Singapore are named after him, such as Raffles College, Raffles Hospital, Raffles Hotel, Raffles Place and Sittanford Road. Of course, in the eyes of the British, he was a champion and great man of colonialism in the British Empire.
