Brief Guide

Shenyang, the capital and largest city of Liaoning Province, gives visitors an impression of great change and modernizing resilience. As the former base of the Imperial City Wall, Shenyang bore witness to the rise of the Manchu Qing Dynasty. The last four hundred years have left the people of Shenyang with a royal palace, two imperial tombs and numerous royal architectural remains. The colonnades of The Shenyang Palace Museum resemble Beijing’s Forbidden City and still give voice to the secret history of the court. Every brick in Marshal Zhang’s Mansion depicts the history of the Warlord Era. The 9.18 Historical Museum tells the story of the pain of that humiliation (also known as the Manchurian Invasion). Shengjing, as it was once known, now has more of a modern feeling. It is a major industrial center and transportation hub for Northeast Asia. The bustle and neon of Zhongjie Street, the lofty television towers, and the lively Liu Laogen Grand Stage all bear witness to the ever-changing nature of Shenyang.

Food Guide

The culinary delights of Shenyang blend Northeastern flavors, featuring dishes from ancient royal cuisine like Xueyi Dousha, to popular street food including fried chicken ribs, smoked meat pancakes, and Da La Pi. Each dish showcases the unique local flair and the city’s rich cultural heritage, offering an enticing and aromatic gastronomic experience.

A popular dish from the Qing Dynasty's royal feasts, these delicacies consist of a supple, airy egg white coating encasing a sweet bean paste. Continuously tossed in the pan, they are transformed into round, cotton-like morsels. Best served hot and dipped in white sugar, their tender, fluffy texture is reminiscent of a traditional Chinese soufflé.

The locally renowned sweet-flavored fried chicken is a must-try delicacy. The chicken racks, marinated in a secret blend of spices, are deep-fried to a perfect golden brown, undergoing a magnificent transformation. The slight hint of spice and rich oiliness make it irresistibly delicious, especially when accompanied by a chilled beer.

In Shenyang, the Jilin smoked pork flatbread is a celebrated northern-style snack. The pork undergoes boiling before being smoked, then it’s sliced thickly and served with a deep crimson hue that gleams enticingly, accompanied by a delightful smoky scent. It’s encased within a freshly baked flatbread that’s crispy on the exterior and soft inside, made with pig fat and flour, creating a robust and savory delight.

Beloved in Northeast China, this noodle salad is celebrated for its delightful chewiness and refreshing flavor. Traditionally, the dish uses cassava starch noodles, which are cooked, chilled, and sliced into strips. These supple noodles are tossed with bean sprouts, cucumber shreds, wood ear mushrooms, and cilantro. To dress the salad, a blend of minced garlic, aromatic vinegar, salt, and sesame oil is used. The final result is a chewy, crisp, and flavorful dish that's irresistibly simple and tasty.

Still in Shenyang: A one-day itinerary within the square city — traveler post in Shenyang

Still in Shenyang: A one-day itinerary within the square city

Route: Shenyang Imperial Palace - Zhongxin Temple (optional) - Viceroy's Palace of the Three Eastern Provinces - Former Residence of Zhang Xueliang - Former Residence of Miss Zhao Si - Shenyang Financial Museum Shenyang Imperial Palace, Shenyang's top attraction, also known as the Shengjing Imperial Palace, was built and used by Nurhaci and Hong Taiji. After the capital moved to Beijing, the Shenyang Imperial Palace became a secondary capital. The interior layout of the Shenyang Imperial Palace has very distinct Manchu characteristics, with kang (heated brick beds) and screens as the basic structural elements. Beijing's Forbidden City has more Han Chinese characteristics, where furniture forms the overall structure. Although it's not as big as the Forbidden City, walking through every part is tiring. Two hours is enough for a quick look, but it's very photogenic. Especially the shadows of the side gates under the evening lights, it really gives off a princess vibe. Zhongxin Temple is located in a corner just outside the palace walls. It was named because it was once the center point of Shenyang city. Now it's just a very, very small room for worshipping Guan Yu. It closes at 3:00 PM, so if you're short on time, there's no need to go out of your way to see it. There is a combined ticket for the Viceroy's Palace of the Three Eastern Provinces, the Former Residence of Zhang Xueliang, the Former Residence of Miss Zhao Si, and the Financial Museum, and these attractions are all along the same route. The Viceroy's Palace is just an old building. Half an hour is enough. It has an early Republic of China style, with almost no traces of the late Qing Dynasty left. The Former Residence of Zhang Xueliang and the Former Residence of Miss Zhao Si are separated by an alley. Although they also feature early Republic of China style, they combine characteristics of siheyuan (courtyard houses) and Western architecture. Compared to Zhang Xueliang's residence, Miss Zhao Si's residence seems very mini. You can see the luxury of the time in the details, and understand the extravagance and wealth of the upper class back then. The most worthwhile part of the Financial Museum is the vault. The rest is just special exhibitions or scene recreations. After this route, the sky in Shenyang gets dark before 5:00 PM. You can check out the night view of the Liu Laogen Stage, watch an Errenzhuan performance, or go eat some Northeast Chinese barbecue. That makes for a perfect day.

Easy family trip to Shenyang | Explore Shenyang Imperial Palace and experience the ancient charm of Shengjing — traveler post in Shenyang

Easy family trip to Shenyang | Explore Shenyang Imperial Palace and experience the ancient charm of Shengjing

If you're bringing kids to Shenyang, the Shenyang Imperial Palace is a must-visit first stop! Immerse yourself in the history of Shengjing. The ancient architecture is grand and breathtaking—you'll come away with so much from this trip✨ As the imperial palace of the early Qing Dynasty, the Shenyang Imperial Palace has a completely different style from the one in Beijing. It's compact and exquisite, making it easy to explore without wearing everyone out—perfect for families. With red walls, yellow tiles, and carved eaves, every corner is steeped in history, creating the perfect atmosphere for photos📸. You can share simple stories about the Qing Dynasty with your little ones as you walk, making history education easy and intuitive—much better than just reading a book. The palace grounds feature scattered halls, with the Dazheng Hall and the Ten Kings' Pavilions being iconic spots. The stone paths are smooth and the route is clear, so you can take your time exploring. There are benches along the way if you get tired. I recommend avoiding the midday heat; try visiting in the morning or evening when the light is softer and it's less crowded. Seeing the magnificent ancient architecture, the kids will be full of curiosity, staying engaged throughout the walk. After exploring the palace, Zhongjie (Middle Street) is just a short walk away, perfect for a quick stroll and grabbing some snacks to recharge. The biggest fear when traveling with kids is cramped accommodation and poor rest. After visiting the palace, we checked into a two-bedroom family suite at the Hunnan Haoze Ruizi Hotel🏠 A two-bedroom layout is a real necessity for family trips! With two separate bedrooms, grandparents, kids, and parents can rest separately without disturbing each other. The room is spacious with great lighting and ventilation. It's kept clean and meticulous, with soft, comfortable bedding and complete amenities. Parking is convenient if you're driving, and the traffic from the palace is smooth. Check-in at the front desk was efficient. After spending half the day walking around historical sites, it was great to return to the room to relax and wash away the fatigue. Many parents worry that visiting the palace with kids will be exhausting, but it's perfectly fine if you slow down the pace. You don't need to rush to check off every exhibition hall; just pick the key buildings to see and leave some room for the kids' imagination. Family travel is about the experience, not checking items off a list. As a must-visit landmark in Shenyang, the Shenyang Imperial Palace is perfect for both short holiday trips and summer outings with kids. You can soak in the ancient charm of Shengjing while providing a history lesson for your children. Spend the day taking photos of the red walls and ancient architecture, then return to the spacious and comfortable two-bedroom family suite in the evening to rest up and recharge for another day of exploring Shenyang. If you're planning a family trip to Shenyang, save this itinerary. Explore the palace to learn about the city's history, stay in a comfortable family room, and enjoy a worry-free, all-in-one experience. For parents who want to let their kids experience the charm of ancient architecture and are looking for an easy family-friendly itinerary, the Shenyang Imperial Palace is a must-add to your list for a meaningful and relaxing trip to Shengjing✅

Benxi Autumn Foliage Guide: A 1-hour drive from Shenyang to a fairytale autumn

As the seasons turn, autumn is in full swing🍂 You have to find a place to chase the autumn, right? That year, the maple leaves in Benxi turned red🍁 Driving from Shenyang, head along the Benhuan Highway. Destinations: Benxi Fengling Valley, Binghugou. 🚗Driving along the way, the mountains outside the window are gradually painted with autumn colors. Once you reach Huanren, it's absolutely stunning. The leaves are colorful, and the entire forest looks like an overturned palette🎨 Layers of red, yellow, and orange. Every snapshot is an autumn wallpaper📸 Stroll through Fengling Valley, stopping here and there. Look at the red maple leaves, look at the rich autumn colors. The water in Binghugou reflects the autumn scenery of the mountains. In the sunlight on a clear day, you'll be left speechless by its beauty😍 No need to deliberately look for photo spots. Just drive slowly along the road and stop whenever you see scenery you like. That's the right way to chase autumn✨ While autumn is in full swing, let's go🚗💨

Solo female trip to Shenyang | Hostel stay and leisurely park stroll — traveler post in Shenyang

Solo female trip to Shenyang | Hostel stay and leisurely park stroll

Traveling solo to Shenyang? If you want to stay in a female-only hostel without packing your itinerary, you can plan around "settling in – park stroll – dining in the commercial district." I recommend checking out Shiyi Meisu Hostel (Qingnian Street MixC branch), which is suitable for travelers who are comfortable with shared accommodation and prefer to travel light. Female-only hostel as your city base This post recommends Shiyi Meisu Hostel (Qingnian Street MixC branch); see the location bar below for details. Settle into your bed and drop off your luggage first, then head to the park or commercial district. You can slow down your pace even when traveling alone. 🎒 Why consider this place, and what to look for when booking a bed The product page lists a laundry room and free luggage storage, which is convenient for backpackers to drop off their bags before heading out. Female-only hostels are a form of shared accommodation. When choosing, first check the number of people in the room, bed type, and bathroom arrangements. If you care a lot about private space, you may need to compare other accommodation types. Communicate your arrival time and late return arrangements with the property in advance. Being able to store luggage doesn't mean you can check in early. Confirm these details before planning your activities for a smoother itinerary. 🗺️ Relaxed half-day itinerary, I suggest this route Arrive and settle in after lunch → Head to Qingnian Park → Stroll and rest by the lake → Dine near MixC → Return to the hostel. I suggest planning for 1–1.5 hours at the park, and 1–2 hours for dining and the commercial district, excluding travel time. Qingnian Park is not right outside the hotel, so plan your route based on the actual entrance before leaving. Save "Qingnian Park" and "Shenyang MixC" on your map to make adjustments on the go. 🌳 What to see at Qingnian Park Here you can take in the lake, the shadows of trees on the shore, and the city buildings all in one view. The sense of travel comes from the interplay between the city and the waterfront, rather than just finding an isolated photo spot. Walk along an open path first, then find a bench to rest for a while. If it's cold or windy, shorten your time by the lake and move your rest indoors. The greenery and water in the photos are references for different seasons. If traveling in November, dress according to the weather on the day; don't prepare clothes based on summer photos. 🥟 How to enjoy Northeast Chinese cuisine solo Dumplings are easier to portion. If you want to eat guobaorou (sweet and sour pork) or stewed dishes, ask if they have small portions, or space out your main meals and snacks. The commercial district is great for dining, restocking supplies, and taking shelter from the rain. Choosing a restaurant with a clear menu and suitable portion sizes is easier than rushing between several places. 🧳 Returning to the shared space at night Get your toiletries, charging, and your bag for the next day ready in advance. When returning late, pack quietly and keep large items in the designated area. A hostel is only suitable for you if you are willing to accept this way of interacting. The corresponding hotel product is attached to the post; you can check bed availability by date. I recommend the "female-only shared accommodation + leisurely city stroll" combination. Room and reception rules are subject to the specific booking. Shiyi Meisu Female-Only Hostel (Qingnian Street MixC Branch) Qingnian Park

Shenyang Bestie Trip | Zhao Erxun Mansion's retro garden is so photogenic

Found a hidden gem in Shenyang's Wanquan Park: Zhao Erxun Mansion. The atmosphere is incredible, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll and photo session with my bestie 📸 The mansion is an old brick-and-wood building steeped in a century of history. Its green bricks, gray tiles, and exquisite carvings give it a natural retro filter. Surrounded by the lush trees of Wanquan Park, it’s a quiet oasis, offering a completely different vibe from the bustling streets outside 🌿 Once you enter the grounds, the pace slows down immediately. It’s not crowded, so there’s no need to fight for photo spots. The interior retains its original layout and displays vintage items, offering a glimpse into Shenyang’s past. Whether you’re by the exterior walls, the corridors, or the old trees in the courtyard, any spot is perfect for high-quality, retro, and artistic photos. After exploring the mansion, you can take a stroll through Wanquan Park, enjoy the breeze by the lake, and watch the boats. It’s a comfortable walk that isn’t too strenuous. It’s free from the crowds, making it the perfect place to slow down and soak in the historical atmosphere of old Shenyang. It’s a great spot to chat with your bestie, share stories about the old city, take some atmospheric photos, escape the city’s fast pace, and enjoy a leisurely afternoon ✨ After exploring the mansion and the park, we checked into a King Room with a bathtub at the Hunnan Haoze Ruizhi Hotel 🛁 The room was spacious and bright with a simple, clean layout, and the standalone bathtub was my favorite feature. After walking and taking photos all afternoon, I was quite tired. Returning to the room to run a hot bath and have a comfortable soak was incredibly relaxing. The bedding was soft and comfortable, the room was spotless, and the amenities were complete. Parking was convenient for our road trip, and the drive from Wanquan Park was smooth. The front desk check-in was efficient and hassle-free, providing a gentle end to a cozy day. For a bestie trip, I prefer places with character that are quiet and less crowded over popular tourist traps. Zhao Erxun Mansion is both historic and photogenic. Combined with Wanquan Park, the entire route is fulfilling yet relaxing—no need to rush, just pure, laid-back enjoyment. Many friends visiting Shenyang head straight for the Imperial Palace or the Marshal’s Mansion, often overlooking this hidden gem inside Wanquan Park. If you love retro, artistic vibes and want to take unique photos, you must add this to your itinerary. Spend the day exploring the mansion and taking photos, then take a stroll by the park lake. In the evening, head back to the hotel for a relaxing bath to recharge for more exploring in Shenyang. This route is perfect for a short holiday trip to Shenyang with your bestie. You can avoid the crowds, immerse yourself in the charm of old Shenyang, and visit hidden gems, all while staying in a comfortable room with a bathtub—making dining, accommodation, and sightseeing stress-free. If you love quiet spots and photography, add Zhao Erxun Mansion to your Shenyang bucket list and get ready to capture some unique travel photos ✅

Fenglingu Forest Park, Huanren, Benxi | A classic hidden gem for maple viewing in eastern Liaoning, with red maples and valleys at every turn — traveler post in Shenyang

Fenglingu Forest Park, Huanren, Benxi | A classic hidden gem for maple viewing in eastern Liaoning, with red maples and valleys at every turn

✨Highlights: Located in Huanren Manchu Autonomous County, Benxi, Fenglingu Forest Park is a famous maple viewing spot in eastern Liaoning, with a forest coverage rate of nearly 99% and abundant negative oxygen ions. The maple leaves here turn red early and have rich color layers. Red maples paired with huge granite rocks, mountain boardwalks, streams, and waterfalls make it great for hiking, photography, and getting some fresh air. Compared to Laobiangou and Yanghugou, it is less crowded, making it suitable for a one-day autumn trip from Shenyang or Benxi. 📍Location: Fenglingu Forest Park, Xiangyang Township, Huanren Manchu Autonomous County, Benxi 🎫Admission: CNY 70 at the gate, approx. CNY 65 if booked online in advance 🚌Sightseeing bus: CNY 20/person (round trip, direct to Shibalohan Forest/Wohu Peak). Highly recommended, as the entrance is far from the core maple viewing area, and walking is very tiring ⏰Hours: 8:30 AM–5:00 PM, last entry at 4:00 PM ⏳️Duration: 3–5 hours, depending on the route 🅿️Parking: Large parking lot at the entrance, CNY 10/time for small cars 🚗Transportation tips ✅Best for driving: Navigate to "Fenglingu Forest Park," take the Heda Expressway, exit at the Fenglingu toll station, and drive another 6 km to arrive. It takes about 2.5–3 hours from Shenyang and about 2 hours from downtown Benxi. The Benhuan Highway along the way is also a scenic maple viewing route, perfect for a quick stop. ✅Public transport: Take a bus to Huanren County, then transfer to a rural bus or tourist shuttle. Service is infrequent, so this is not recommended. 📜Park overview Fenglingu is a 4A-rated forest park with deep valleys and gentle slopes, though some sections have steep stairs. Its biggest feature is the coexistence of giant rocks and red maples. Huge gray granite rocks stand in the forest, with red maples stretching out from rock crevices and cliffs. Combined with mountain boardwalks, the Jiuqu Stream, and the Jiudie Waterfall, it is incredibly picturesque and a must-visit spot for many photography enthusiasts every year. 🌟Must-see attractions 🍁Red maples and giant rocks (top photo spot) The park's iconic landscape. A huge solitary rock stands in the forest, with red maples leaning against it. The blue sky, giant rock, and flame-like red leaves create a perfect frame for stunning photos. 🪵Mountain boardwalk Wooden steps with green railings wind through the maple forest. Surrounded by red leaves and dappled light, walking on the boardwalk feels like traveling through a red tunnel. It's a relaxing pace for walking and taking photos. 💧Jiuqu Gorge & Jiudie Waterfall The highlight of the valley route. Clear springs cascade down the rocks, with maple trees growing along the stream. The mix of red and yellow colors and the sound of flowing water make for a cool, comfortable, and leisurely walk. 🏔Red Maple Peak observation deck The highest point of the park. Climb up to overlook the "five-flower mountain" across the entire valley. The red leaves spread out in layers, offering a wide, panoramic view. The downside is that there are many stairs, which can be physically demanding. 🌳Shibalohan Forest A concentrated area of tall maple trees. The forest is dense with a high density of red leaves. It is also the main stop for the sightseeing bus. 🗺️Two recommended routes, choose according to your needs 👉Leisurely family route | Approx. 3 hours, friendly for all ages Enter the park at the visitor center → Take the sightseeing bus directly to Shibalohan Forest → Jiuqu Gorge boardwalk → Jiudie Waterfall. Walk gently downhill along the stream with few steep slopes, enjoy the stream and red leaves, take photos, and then take the bus back to the exit. 👉In-depth photography route | 4–5 hours, suitable for those with good stamina who love photography Visitor center → Take the sightseeing bus up to Wohu Peak → Hike the loop trail, check out the giant rock maple scenery → Climb to the Red Maple Peak observation deck for a panoramic view of the maple sea → Hike down the Hongyun boardwalk, accompanied by maple forests all the way, with plenty of photo spots along the route. Tip: Take the bus up and hike down to avoid climbing and save energy.

Marshal Zhang's Mansion Museum

Ticketing was convenient and quick, the attractions were excellent, and I gained a deep understanding of historical events, experiencing history immersively. By the way, Zhang Shaoshuai's house is really huge! The queue for the Grand Green Building was too long to go in, but I'll go again next time!

Shenyang Imperial Palace

Autumn deepens in Shengjing, a century of gentle tranquility awaits at the Shenyang Imperial Palace. My trip to Shengjing in November coincided perfectly with the pleasant season at the Shenyang Imperial Palace. With fewer tourists, there was no need to squeeze through crowds for photos, allowing for a leisurely and relaxed pace. Unlike the grandeur of the Forbidden City in Beijing, this palace outside the Great Wall possesses a unique, simple charm characteristic of the early Qing Dynasty, quiet and captivating in the soft autumn sunlight. Entering through the Great Qing Gate, the hustle and bustle of the city is instantly shut out behind the red walls. The entire tour route is full of surprises; most of the halls are open to the public, allowing visitors to examine the paintings, furnishings, and artifacts inside, rather than just gazing from afar through fences, enabling a more authentic experience of the past. The East Road is its most recognizable section, with the octagonal eaves of the Dazheng Hall, simple yet majestic, and opposite it, the Ten Princes' Pavilions, a vivid testament to the Eight Banners system. The autumn sun slanted across the glazed tiles and blue bricks, casting shifting shadows. Occasionally, a fallen yellow leaf drifted to the edge of the platform, the stillness seeming to whisper of bygone eras. At the heart of the central axis lies the Chongzheng Hall, where Emperor Huang Taiji held court; its painted decorations remain vibrant. The Phoenix Tower stands tall, once the highest point in Shengjing (Mukden), its steps leading to layers of palace courtyards. Architectural details blending Manchu, Han, and Mongolian styles are hidden among the pillars and windows; a closer look reveals hidden gems at every turn. My favorite area was the Wensu Pavilion on the western axis. The courtyard was serene, once a repository of books. Fewer tourists, quiet corridors—perfect for a moment's rest, gazing at the eaves and the blue sky. No noise, only the wind rustling through the courtyard, a gentle sense of history washing over you. The fewer crowds and the abundance of exhibitions were the biggest pluses of this trip. No need to rush; you could linger anywhere, carefully reading the explanations within the halls, slowly capturing the atmosphere of late autumn against the red walls. A leisurely half-day stroll under the red walls of Shengjing in November offers a comfortable and unhurried experience of exploring the past.

Shenyang Fangcheng Cultural Tourism Area

There were so many people and tourists that I didn't have time to take in many things. It's like a low-end version of the Forbidden City in Beijing. Many of the artifacts on display were discarded from the Forbidden City. Some rooms were off-limits, so people crowded around the entrances to take photos. There was no lighting inside, so the photos didn't look great. The architecture is still quite distinctive.

Shenyang Fantawild Adventure

Overall, it's pretty good. Once you get there, you can rent a car. I didn't know how to drive at first, but with my years of driving experience, I learned quickly. This saves energy. You can download an app, locate yourself, and check out the attractions and waiting times. Boys might like the Dinosaur Extinction attraction, as well as some thrilling rides. Some attractions require separate fees, such as the Ice and Snow World and the Petting Zoo!

Qinghe Peninsula Spa&Hot Spring

We took our kids back to China for summer vacation and had our first experience at a Northeastern Chinese bathhouse. We absolutely loved all the facilities and services. Children under 1.4 meters tall get in for free, making it incredibly good value for money. If we have the chance, we'll definitely bring our family and friends to experience this top-tier bathhouse in China!

Zhongjie Street

Zhongjie Street is quite long with many side streets, lined with shops and restaurants, and bustling with pedestrians. It seems well worth a visit and is a landmark pedestrian street in Shenyang. It's convenient to get anywhere from Zhongjie Street, but during my few days in Shenyang, I only spent a relatively short time shopping there. I mainly explored other areas outside of Zhongjie Street. It was a bit of a regret that I treated Zhongjie Street primarily as a transportation hub. Next time I visit Shenyang, I'll definitely explore it more. If I hadn't been in a rush, I could have spent more time there. I mainly visited the Forbidden City, Zhang Xueliang's Former Residence, and the Dadong Food Market on Zhongjie Street.

Qipan Mountain

Qipanshan is a famous mountain in Shenyang City. It has a wildlife park, a film and television city, a World Horticultural Exposition Garden, many villa areas, and an outlet town. The scenery is beautiful, but it is quite far to get into the scenic area. During holidays, it is often impossible to drive in or out.

Liu Laogen Stage

Last year around this time, I also visited Liu Laogen in Shenyang. I doubt many people would spend 688 yuan to see it two years in a row like me. Last year, I laughed so hard I almost fell over; it left a very deep impression. Even though I've seen it several times over the years, especially since Li Baoguo was just starting out back then, and Errenzhuan was much more colorful. This time, however, I was a little disappointed. The show was basically the same as last year's, the jokes and punchlines were the same, even the selling points and costumes were identical. I laughed, but the same feeling of being doubled over was gone. Being an actor isn't easy, and constantly coming up with something new is even harder. But since they've chosen this path, there's no way around it; actors need to be observant and innovative. I wonder if I'll be pleasantly surprised next time I see it.
