Thameslink upcoming planned strikes 2026 timetable

If you rely on Thameslink to get around, strike action can throw off your plans at short notice. Whether you’re commuting to and from central London or catching a train to Gatwick or Luton Airport, industrial action can lead to cancellations, reduced services and last-minute timetable changes- so it pays to stay informed, and that's exactly where this guide comes in.

Thameslink operates high-frequency services across London and the Home Counties. Major stations across the route include Bedford, St Albans, London St Pancras, London Bridge, Gatwick Airport, Brighton and Cambridge. As these are typical commuter routes, strikes on Thameslink can seriously affect people travelling to and from work.

This guide explains how to check for upcoming Thameslink strike action and what you can do if your route is affected.

Is Thameslink on strike today or next week?

Good news if you’re travelling soon - there are no confirmed Thameslink strikes planned for today or next week. That said, industrial action can be called at fairly short notice, so it’s always worth double-checking before you head out.

You can check for live updates on the Thameslink and the National Rail websites. It’s also a good idea to follow them on social media, too. Bear in mind that timetable changes sometimes aren't confirmed until just a day or two before a strike, so make a habit of checking on the morning of your journey. Luckily, you'll always find the most up-to-date timetables here on Trip.com.

Thameslink strike dates and latest updates

There are no confirmed Thameslink-specific strikes at the time of writing, but there’s one piece of related disruption you should be aware of:

London Underground strike action: Tuesday 19 to Friday 22 May / Tuesday 16 to 19 June 2026

If you’re travelling during this period, keep an eye on your Thameslink services. Some London Underground drivers have announced industrial action, so you may see knock-on effects on Thameslink trains, such as overcrowding and even queues to board.

Thameslink has confirmed they’re working with London Underground to understand how this might affect your journey, and they’ll share more information as it comes through.

Beyond this, there are no further confirmed strike dates. Here are a few things worth keeping in mind:

Industrial action - including overtime bans - can be announced with as little as two weeks’ notice, so keep an eye on the news and Thameslink’s own channels.
You won’t always face a full shutdown. Some strikes lead to partial services, with reduced frequencies or certain routes running as normal.
Strike-day timetables are usually published a day or two beforehand, so check your journey on Trip.com before you set off.

How do Thameslink strikes affect your journey?

When a strike does go ahead, you’ll likely notice a big drop in the number of trains running. London services - St Pancras, Farringdon, City Thameslink, Blackfriars and London Bridge - are usually the first to be cut back, and that has a knock-on effect on the rest of the route, no matter where you’re heading.

If you need to get to Gatwick or Luton Airport by train, be aware that airport services tend to be hit hard, too. You might find your service is reduced or suspended altogether on strike days. Trains that do run are often much busier than usual, so be prepared for crowded carriages and longer waits on the platform.

Here are a few tips to help you stay on track:

Give yourself extra time. Even if your train is running, delays and overcrowding can add to your journey.
Travel outside peak hours if you can. You’ll find the trains that do run are quieter in the middle of the day.
Check your last train time carefully. Strike-day timetables often bring the last departure forward, so don’t assume the usual schedule applies.
Work from home if you can. On the busiest strike days, you’ll save yourself a lot of hassle by staying put.

Alternative travel options during Thameslink strikes

Don’t worry if your usual Thameslink service is cancelled - you’ve got other ways to get where you need to go. Here are your main options:

London Underground. The Tube covers a lot of central London and is often your quickest backup, as long as it isn’t also affected by strike action on the same day.
Southern, Great Northern and Southeastern. These operators run routes that overlap with Thameslink and may still be running during strikes. You can check what’s available for your journey on Trip.com.
Buses and coaches. TfL buses run right across London and don’t depend on rail staff, so they’re a reliable fallback for you. Just be prepared for busy buses and possible waits. National Express and Megabus also cover longer routes if you need to get to one of the airports.
Walking or cycling. If your journey’s within London, you might find it quicker to walk or hire a Santander bike than to deal with overcrowded Tube stations on a strike day.

Popular FAQs for Thameslink strikes

How far in advance are Thameslink strikes announced?

Usually 1–2 weeks before the planned date. Unions are legally required to give at least 14 days’ notice of industrial action, so you’ll normally have a bit of time to rearrange your plans. That said, overtime bans and other types of action can sometimes come through with less warning, so it’s worth keeping an eye on the news in the run-up to your journey.

Will airport trains still run during Thameslink strikes?

It depends on the scale of the strike. Trains to Gatwick and Luton are often reduced rather than fully suspended, but they can stop altogether during major industrial action. If you’ve got a flight to catch, it’s best to have a backup plan - the Gatwick Express from Victoria and coaches from London to both airports are good alternatives to keep in mind.

Can I get a refund if my Thameslink train is cancelled due to a strike?

Yes - if your train is cancelled because of strike action, you’re entitled to a full refund on your unused ticket. You can also claim compensation through the Delay Repay scheme if your train ran but arrived significantly late. Just make sure you keep hold of your ticket and check the rules for refunds when you book.

Do Thameslink strikes affect weekends?

Yes, they can. Strike action isn’t limited to weekdays - it depends entirely on the dates chosen. If you’ve got weekend plans that involve Thameslink, always check before you head to the station so you’re not caught out.
