Just a short walk from the centre of Ambleside a nice little meadows area by the river that flows into the lake. In the meadows are the remains of the Roman fort. There's not a lot to see but its qu...
Roman fort in Ambleside
Half of the fort is still under the grass why can’t it be fully excavated , plus it’s not advertised in the town no signs ! We don’t make the most of the history of this country
It’s worth a look
It’s amazing to think what it used to be, there isn’t much left on the site now. It’s worth a look and free to enter. Run by the national trust if you are walking to waterhead, wander over.
Not a lot to see
IF you are in the area its worth a quick visit. I don't think I would travel miles to see the fort..
It's free, and right there - go see it!
This is a free open access site. It's only a few mins walk from Ambleside. Go down there and imagine what it was like being a Roman in the Lake District !
