National Trust - Birmingham Back to Backs

It is the surviving backtoback building in Birmingham and is now maintained as a National Trust museum. These buildings are representative of thousands of similar houses of the year, which were courtyards of workers' quarters in the 19th century. At the end of the 18th century, due to the discovery of coal mines around Birmingham and the vigorous development of other industries, especially the jewelry industry, a large number of industrial workers came here to look for job opportunities. A wall is added in the middle of the house, and one family lives in the front, and the other family lives in the back, commonly known as "back to back". Back-to-back architectural styles were all the rage in Birmingham from the mid-19th to the mid-20th centuries due to a rapidly expanding population, and at one point a quarter of the inhabitants lived in such buildings. At that time, most of the immigrants who lived here were immigrants from Asia. Most of them made some small handicrafts in their own small workshops, such as buttons, glass, wooden furniture, leather, tailors or jewelry. The interior decoration of the room has been carefully designed to fully reflect all aspects of the life of the inhabitants of that year.
