📍The History of Spinalonga, the Island of the Lepers in Crete, Greek Island 🏠 Spinalonga is situated in the natural harbor of Elounda in the Lassithi in Crete. It’s known in the world, inhabited leper community between 1903 to 1957 and this was one of the last active leper colonies in Europe, population reached nearly 400 inhabitants during the outbreak of the illness. Infected people were sent to isolation. In Greece, the isolation center was on the island of Spinalonga. Today, Spinalonga, is one of the most visited archaeological site of Crete, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the greatest historical landmarks in Greece, with people from all over the world arriving in Crete to explore this island. There are a few houses renovated to museums and you would be able to get a glimpse of inhabitants everyday living here. How to get there? There are regular ferry service across the island from Elounda town which is only 20-30 mins away, entry tickets can be purchased once you arrive on the island.
