Caerphilly Castle: Wales’ Leaning Medieval Masterpiece — traveler post in Caerphilly

Caerphilly Castle: Wales’ Leaning Medieval Masterpiece

Caerphilly Castle is a jaw-dropping testament to medieval military engineering. As the second-largest castle in Britain (surpassed only by Windsor), this massive 13th-century fortress feels less like a historical ruin and more like an imposing stone island rising directly out of a network of formidable, glassy moats. Walking across the gatehouse bridge, the sheer scale of the concentric walls—a design where an inner wall overlooks an outer one—is incredibly humbling. The castle's most famous feature, however, is its iconic northwest tower. Split open during the English Civil War, it leans at an angle even more dramatic than the Leaning Tower of Pisa, defying gravity right over the lush grass. Wandering through the grand great hall and exploring the dark, winding stone passageways makes it easy to visualize the medieval battles that once raged here. Surrounded by resident swans gliding across the water and offering panoramic views of the Welsh valleys from its ramparts, Caerphilly perfectly bridges brutal medieval history with breathtaking scenery. It is an absolute must-visit for any history buff exploring Wales.

Caerphilly Castle — The Largest Medieval Fortress in Wales. — traveler post in Caerphilly

Caerphilly Castle — The Largest Medieval Fortress in Wales.

Caerphilly Castle is one of the most magnificent medieval castles in Great Britain and the absolute largest in Wales. Surrounded by artificial lakes and massive defensive fortifications, it looks like it was pulled straight out of a historical movie set. Built in the 13th century, the castle played a crucial role in the battle for control over Wales and still blows visitors away with its sheer scale and brilliant engineering. ✨ What makes it so impressive: 🏰 Massive fortress walls and towering structures 🌊 An intricate system of artificial lakes and water defenses 🛡 One of the best-preserved medieval castles in Europe 📜 Over 700 years of rich history 🏛 The famous leaning tower, often compared to the Leaning Tower of Pisa 🌿 Spacious grounds perfect for a relaxing stroll 📸 Breathtaking views of the castle reflecting on the water The most striking view of the fortress is from across the lakes. The stone walls and towers perfectly mirrored in the calm water create a truly fairytale-like vibe. It's particularly fun to walk along the battlements and imagine what life was like for the knights and defenders during the Middle Ages. The sheer size of the complex really gives you a sense of the immense power behind one of the most impregnable fortresses of its time. 💡 Useful info: · 📍 Located in the town of Caerphilly, about 10 miles (15 km) from Cardiff · 🎟 There is an admission fee, with special rates for kids and families · 🚆 Super easy to get to by train from Cardiff in under 20 minutes · ⏰ Plan to spend about 2–3 hours for your visit · 🌊 Widely considered one of the finest examples of medieval military architecture in Europe · 📸 The best photo spots are from the opposite side of the lakes and by the main entrance Caerphilly Castle is a place where history truly comes alive amidst majestic towers, stunning water reflections, and the authentic vibe of medieval Wales. 🏰🌊🏴📸

3 beginner-friendly Trig point walks in South Wales — traveler post in Caerphilly

3 beginner-friendly Trig point walks in South Wales

These are perfect for families across all the seasons. . Save this for a sunny day in South Wales and tick off some Welsh trig points! It’s surprising how having a physical goal to reach can really help motivate a person, especially kids. So if you want to start ticking off some Trig points but don’t know where to start here are 3 beginner friendly ones. . 1. Caerphilly Mountain Technically a hill but still offers up some fantastic views across Caerphilly and Rhondda Cynon Taff. There is an easy circular route from the Snack Bar carpark that takes you up to the Trig Point and around. We do this often and takes around 30mins although you can extend the route (see AllTrails for some ideas). . 2. The Garth Just over 1000 feet this is a fantastic first Trig for kids who like a bit of an adventure and challenge and the views across both Cardiff and the Severn as well as The Valleys is fantastic. There are many routes ranging in length but I would start with the AllTrails circular that takes around 1-1.5hrs. . 3. Twyn Y Gaer, Bannau Brycheiniog A lovely wander up along Mynydd Illtud to the Iron Age fort of Twyn Y Gaer with it’s fantastic Trip point and views of the surrounding mountains. The trail starts at the National Park Visitors Centre and takes around 1.5-2hrs. The circular route is on AllTrails . Of course there are plenty of others in and around South Wales but these 3 have always been personal favourites with the kids happy to join in. 🏰 One Day, Three Castles, Roman Legends & a Stunning Abbey – Wales at Its Best! — traveler post in Caerphilly

🏰 One Day, Three Castles, Roman Legends & a Stunning Abbey – Wales at Its Best!

If you're visiting Cardiff and want to experience the very best of South Wales in a single day, this unforgettable journey through castles, Roman history, and breathtaking landscapes should be at the top of your list. Our adventure began in Caerleon, one of the most important Roman sites in Britain. Walking through the ancient Amphitheatre, it was easy to imagine the crowds that once gathered for gladiatorial games nearly 2,000 years ago. The site is also linked to the legends of King Arthur, adding an extra layer of mystery to its fascinating history. The National Roman Legion Museum and Roman Baths provide an incredible glimpse into life on the edge of the Roman Empire. Next came the mighty Chepstow Castle, dramatically perched above the River Wye. As Britain's oldest surviving stone castle, it offers spectacular views and centuries of stories hidden within its walls. A short drive away, we discovered the haunting beauty of Tintern Abbey. Nestled in the heart of the Wye Valley, these magnificent Gothic ruins have inspired artists, poets, and travelers for generations. Even today, the peaceful atmosphere makes it one of the most magical places in Wales. The journey continued to Caerphilly Castle, one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe. Its famous leaning tower—leaning even more than Pisa's!—is just one of the reasons this castle is so impressive. Finally, we visited the picturesque Caldicot Castle, surrounded by peaceful parkland and scenic walking paths. It was the perfect place to end a day filled with history, legends, and unforgettable views. 💡 Travel Tips: · Bring comfortable walking shoes—there's plenty to explore at each site. · Pack a waterproof jacket; Welsh weather can change quickly. · Allow time for photos at Tintern Abbey—the setting is spectacular. · Visit Caerphilly Castle's moat and leaning tower for some unique photo opportunities. · Bring snacks and water, especially if you're exploring all the stops in one day. · Don't rush—each location has its own fascinating story worth discovering. ✨ From Roman amphitheatres and Arthurian legends to medieval castles and ancient abbeys, this is one of the most rewarding day trips you can take from Cardiff. Have you explored any of these incredible Welsh landmarks? #travel2026#thingstodo#myitinerary#citydaytours

A Memorable Birthday Treat at Morel Restaurant, Ipoh. 🍖🥗🥘🍛🥃🍰🥦☕ — traveler post in Caerphilly

A Memorable Birthday Treat at Morel Restaurant, Ipoh. 🍖🥗🥘🍛🥃🍰🥦☕

#ipohfood#finedining I had the absolute pleasure of celebrating my birthday with a surprise treat from friends at Morel Restaurant in Ipoh, and what an unforgettable experience it was! This contemporary fusion fine dining restaurant is housed in a heritage bungalow, the ambiance set the tone perfectly, cozy yet refined. Morel strikes that lovely balance between casual comfort and fine dining elegance. The staff were warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, making me feel celebrated right from the start. The food? Simply outstanding. Every dish was thoughtfully presented and bursting with flavour. You could truly taste the quality of ingredients and the passion behind each creation. Whether it was the beautifully seared mains, delicate pastas, or indulgent desserts, each bite was a delight. I was particularly impressed by the Seafood Risotto, Iberico Spare Ribs, Wild Mushrooms Soup and Squid Ink Pasta, each dish was packed with flavour and beautifully prepared. A special mention goes to the surprise birthday dessert and their signature Tiramisu, elegantly plated, delicious, and served with the friendliest smiles. It added such a personal and heartwarming touch to the evening. ⭐ Rating: 5/5. I’ll definitely be returning, and would highly recommend to anyone visiting Ipoh. 🕛 Morel Restaurant is open daily from 12pm - 3 pm, and 6pm - 10 pm. Closed on Monday & Tuesday. 📍77, Jalan Chung Thye Phin, 30250 Ipoh, Perak.

Caerphilly Castle — traveler post in Caerphilly

Caerphilly Castle

A fantastic day out at Europes 2nd largest castle. There are extensive grounds and ruins to explore, and a huge moat that you can walk around and enjoy on a sunny day .Inside the castle there are toilets, a picnic area and a gift shop but not much else. I understand that they're building a new cafe and eating area just inside the main gates .The leaning tower, which apparently leans further than the one in Pisa, is superb and make sure you get a picture where you're holding it up! #wales #castles #awesomepic #summervacation
