Exploring Osaka's Castles: Osaka Castle and Himeji Castle
Curere Walker
Kōko-en Gardens in Himeji City is a complex of nine exquisite Edo-style gardens situated on the site of the former Goyashiki in western Himeji Castle, set against the backdrop of the elegant silhouette of Shirasagi Castle. This is no ordinary garden, but rather a page crafted through time, its scenery telling a new story with every turn.
The gardens are distinguished by their segmented design, from the koi carp reflections of the Goyashiki Garden and the matcha ceremony of the Tea Garden to the subtle charm of the Bamboo Garden, the profound dignity of the Pine Garden, the vibrant colors of the Flower Garden, and even the Sloping Garden and Water Garden, which together create a seasonal symphony. The garden's teahouse, Soju-an, offers a moment of tranquility. Sitting on the tatami mats, one can savor the crimson maple leaves and the echoing sound of the flowing water.
I particularly love the path that winds along the waterway, a dialogue with the ancient castle walls. The ripples of water droplets echo like memories, while the stone bridge, green moss, and crimson leaves form a mosaic of time. Here, you're not just admiring the scenery; you're strolling through a silent drama of Edo. Kokoen isn't an overly designed attraction, but a soothing place where you can breathe in sync with the changing seasons.
