Located in eastern California, Mount Whitney is the highest peak in the continental United States at 4,418 meters above sea level. The mountain was discovered by American geologist Whitney, hence the name. The peaks here are relatively gentle, covered by heavy snow all year round, and avalanche channels and granite blocks can be seen on the slopes.
