Fast Hands and Still Hearts: Shaolin Temple
#2023TravelWish #henanprovince #china
By now, everyone should know of the famous KungFu shows of the Shaolin Monks, but what impressed me most when visiting was not the martial arts (although that was thrilling) but rather the beautiful architecture, history and peace of the place.
Admittedly, we made the trip off season, so there were not as many tourists, but even so, the quiet of the place stood out. Watch out for my favourite part not featured here, the ancient tree with hundred bear old finger holes used by decades of monks for practice!

Feels Like I’m Inside a KungFu Movie 🎥
The moment you enter DengFeng town, you’ll notice a never ending rows of KungFu Schools. Yes, right, hundreds if not thousands of people from children to teenagers to adults are here to learn the very martial arts we know only from movies on our childhoods. So obviously, you’ll need to visit the iconic Shaolin Temple, too!!
This Shaolin Temple is located at the foot of Wuru Peak of the Songshan mountain range in Dengfeng County, Henan Province, China.
Watch my clip and you’ll see just a very tiny piece of performance by some of the students there and it was really impressive to see them up close (and mot through TV Screen!). If you’d also like to learn some basic movements, check it out with local tours and guides out there.

Henan Museum Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Zhengzhou | The Henan Museum holds half of the history of China
If there's one must-visit attraction in Zhengzhou, it's definitely the Henan Museum . As the birthplace of Chinese civilization, Henan Province carries the weight of numerous historical changes. The Henan Museum has collected over 170,000 cultural relics from ancient metropolises such as Luoyang, Kaifeng, Anyang, and Shangqiu, showcasing the long-standing culture of the Central Plains .
Even after lending out half of its artifacts, the Henan Museum still boasts nine major treasures that serve as its pillars .
The nine most famous treasures are:
The Jiahu bone flutes
The Duling square cauldron
The Fu Hao owl-shaped wine vessel
The jade-handled iron sword
The lotus and crane square pot
The cloud-patterned bronze ge
The painting of the Four Deities in Clouds
The gold slips of Empress Wu Zetian
The Ru kiln sky-blue glazed carved goose-neck vase
The cultural and creative products of the Henan Museum are also extremely exquisite among many museums. There is a shop on each floor selling fridge magnets, postcards, and blind boxes. Additionally, there's a Henan Museum exclusive water in the fridge, blueberry-flavored and very refreshing to drink; you might want to try a bottle.
The Henan Museum has 4 floors and 16 exhibition halls, and a thorough visit takes about 3-5 hours . Advance reservation is required. Located at No. 8 Agriculture Road, Jinshui District, Zhengzhou City, Henan Province, it is accessible by subway or bus.
The Glory in the Center of the World (Zhengzhou)
In the five thousand years of Chinese civilization, Henan has been the national center of politics, economy, and culture for three thousand years. Despite the rampant looting by the 'Luoyang Shovel' and many significant cultural relics being 'borrowed' by national institutions, the profound cultural heritage of this major province of cultural relics is undeniable
The venue facilities are a bit old, and although there are 16 exhibition halls, none of them are very large, considering it has been over 25 years since its establishment. However, the exhibition layout is clear, the exhibits are plentiful, and the introductions are detailed. It is definitely a must-visit place in Henan.
Visitors started lining up at the entrance after 9:30 am on a weekday, and the crowd inside was quite large, feeling just as crowded as the Shaanxi History Museum. However, the number of visitors noticeably decreased around noon, allowing for a more relaxed photo-taking experience. It is recommended not to rush for an early visit all at once
One pitfall in terms of service is the lack of a bag storage area inside the exhibition halls. The lockers are outside, which is fine when there are few people, but it's quite inconvenient to queue under the scorching sun to enter, only to be told that you need to go out to store your bags and then re-queue to enter... I wonder which leader's brainchild this design was.
The museum is spread over four floors, with exhibition halls 15 and 16, which are temporary exhibition halls, located on the first floor. The remaining 14 halls are arranged in chronological order. Currently, the two temporary exhibition halls are the Stone Carving Art Hall and the Luxembourg Relics Exhibition, with the former mostly featuring exhibits from Nanyang, and the latter showcasing the history and culture of Luxembourg, as well as typical cultural relics such as coins, sculptures, furniture, and architecture.
Photos 1-10 are what I consider to be the more exquisite cultural relics, which I have taken to share with everyone. Especially photos 1 and 2, the bronzes located on the fourth floor, are in the same hall as the cloud-patterned bronze vessels, with unique shapes, intricate patterns, and smooth lines. I wonder why they didn't make it as the treasures of the museum
Photos 11-20 are naturally the nine treasures of the museum. Due to the numerous introductions, I won't list them all here
In short, if you want to understand the history of Henan, the Provincial Museum is definitely the choice to make
Zhengzhou | The Henan Museum you can't miss, brimming with national treasures that dazzle the eyes, truly stunning!

Henan Museum
I visited the Henan Museum three years ago, and this time I came to Zhengzhou for a second tour. It took nearly five hours in total for the morning and afternoon to visit all the exhibition halls, and I still feel that many were just a quick glance, without the opportunity to observe everything carefully.
The nine treasures of the museum:
* Jiahu Bone Flute: Neolithic Period, early Peiligang culture (about 9,000 years ago, around 7000 BC), the earliest musical instrument unearthed in China to date, and also the earliest playable musical instrument in the world.
* Duling Square Ding: Middle Shang Dynasty, it is the earliest, largest, most perfectly cast, and best-preserved bronze heavy vessel known to mankind. It is also the earliest Chinese ritual vessel decorated with taotie patterns and nipple studs. Unearthed in Zhengzhou City in 1974, there are two pieces, the larger one is in the National Museum, and the smaller one is in the Henan Museum.
* Fu Hao Owl Zun: Late Shang Dynasty (11th century BC), unearthed in 1976 from the tomb of Fu Hao in Yinxu, Anyang, Henan. It is 45.9 cm tall, 16.4 cm long at the mouth, and was used as a wine vessel. The shape resembles an owl with its head held high, round eyes, wide beak, small ears, tall crown, wings folded, and three points of support formed by the two feet and the tail. There is an opening on the back of the neck, covered on top, and the inner wall is cast with the inscription 'Fu Hao'. There is a beast-head-shaped bow handle on the back.
* Jade-handled Iron Sword: Late Western Zhou Dynasty. Unearthed in 1990 from the tomb of Guo Ji in Sanmenxia City, Henan Province. The sword is 20 cm long, with a 13 cm hilt, and the blade is inserted into a carefully made cowhide sheath. There are traces of silk fabric wrapped around the sword, and the handle is made of Hetian jade. Due to long burial, the blade is broken into two pieces, and the sheath is corroded and stuck to the blade, making it impossible to separate. After research by experts, it was discovered that this sword is made of carburized steel, which is made by carburizing a block of wrought iron over a long period and repeatedly forging it, making the cast objects sharper and more durable. The jade-handled iron sword is exquisitely made, combining iron, copper, and jade. It is the earliest man-made iron product unearthed in Chinese archaeological excavations. Its discovery has advanced the history of Chinese man-made iron smelting by nearly two centuries, hence it is known as 'China's First Sword'.
* Lotus Crane Square Pot: Spring and Autumn Period (771–476 BC). Unearthed in 1923 in Xinzheng, Henan. It is 117 cm tall, 30.5 cm long at the mouth, and 24.9 cm wide. The pot has a crown cover, a long neck, a drooping belly, and a ring foot. The pot is majestic and elegantly decorated. The crown of the pot is shaped like double-layered blooming lotus petals, with a crane ready to fly on the flat cover in the middle; dragon-shaped monsters on both sides of the pot neck serve as ears; the body is fully decorated with chi dragon patterns, with a three-dimensional small beast climbing on each of the four corners of the belly, and two curled-tail beasts with heads to the side and tongues sticking out under the ring foot, supporting the heavy vessel with all their might.
* Cloud-patterned Bronze Ji: Middle Spring and Autumn Period (620–467 BC). Unearthed in 1978 in Xiasi, Xichuan, Henan. It is 28.8 cm tall, 103 cm long, and 46 cm wide. The Ji is a stand for placing wine vessels, supported by bronze stems of varying thicknesses with multiple layers of openwork cloud patterns, with twelve dragon-shaped beasts climbing around the Ji and another twelve squatting underneath as feet. This is the earliest bronze ware found in China that was cast using the lost-wax method.
* Four Spirits and Cloud Qi Painting: Early Western Han Dynasty. Unearthed in 1987 from the tomb in the Liangguo King's Mausoleum area in Mangdang Mountain, Yongcheng. The mural is 5.14 meters long, 3.27 meters wide, and has an area of 16.8 square meters. The 'Four Spirits and Cloud Qi Painting' is located at the top of the tomb chamber, with a 7-meter-long giant dragon soaring in the middle, the Vermilion Bird to the east, and the White Tiger to the west, surrounded by monsters, lingzhi mushrooms, and cloud patterns. It has extremely high historical and artistic value. It is not only the earliest, largest, highest-ranking, and best-preserved mural seen in China but also a magnificent epic carrying the thoughts of immortality in the early Western Han Dynasty. Later, archaeological experts used scientific methods to cut out the mural in its original form and move it to the Henan Museum.
* Wu Zetian Gold Slip: Early Tang Dynasty. Unearthed in 1982 at the Jueji Peak of Mount Songshan. The gold slip is rectangular, 36.2 cm long, 8 cm wide, and 0.1 cm thick, weighing 223.5 grams. The front is engraved with a double-hook regular script inscription of 3 lines and 63 characters, 'The sovereign of the Great Zhou, Wu Zetian, who enjoys music and the true Dao of immortality, respectfully visits the gate of the high mountain of Mount Songshan, offering a gold slip to the Three Officials and Nine Bureaus to remove Wu Zetian's sins, on the seventh day of the seventh month of the Gengzi year, Jia Shen, the small envoy Hu Chao bows and respectfully reports.' This is Wu Zetian's prayer for blessings on Mount Songshan on the seventh day of the seventh month of the first year of Jiushi (AD 700), sending the eunuch Hu Chao to offer a slip to the gods to remove sins and disasters. This is the only gold slip found in China.
* Ru Kiln Sky Blue Glazed Carved Goose-neck Vase: The only complete piece of sky blue glazed ware obtained from the archaeological excavation of the Ru official kiln site.

Fuxi Mountain Grand Canyon Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
It is said that the scenery at the doorstep is not a scene, and it is rare to visit the scenic spots in Henan. When the effort of the accelerator is coming to Fuxi Mountain, I feel that the landscape here and the landscape are worthy of more people to discover. Stepping up the stairs, the rain after the rain belongs to the coolness of the mountains, and such mountains and rivers also fall into our memory...
The Fuxi Mountain Grand Canyon is 5 kilometers long. It runs along the water, the waterfall continues, and the landscape is step by step. There are also Fuxi Pavilion and Fuxi Lake. The natural landscape is very beautiful.
The roses in the Rose Garden of Fuxi Mountain Grand Canyon in Henan are in full bloom. Tomorrow is 520. Bring your loved ones here to enjoy the flowers! The 100-acre rose in the rose garden floats ten miles. The fragrance of this rose is the taste of the roses we usually eat, especially good.
Rose Garden has also set up a lot of online language for people who come here to play, cute Tigger, cute pigs and so on. The girl who wants to take pictures must not miss it. The photo taken in the rose garden is destined to be a red photo.
When I went, there was a fog in the mountains, just like entering a fairyland. The roses with dewdrops in the scent exude a charming fragrance. There are also many beautiful rose flowers around the
rose garden. The roses of various colors are just a sea of flowers.
A pair of lovers holding hands in this romantic rose sea, the goddesses are filled with happy smiles, I am really envious! The
Fuqi Mountain Grand Canyon is a two-hour drive from Zhengzhou City, and it is very convenient to navigate the past.
How beautiful the valley is, how beautiful the mountain is.

unique henan land of dramas Travel Recommendations for 2024 (Updated in May)
Henan's Drama Fantasy City is a treasure trove of drama worth revisiting multiple times!
🚄During the May Day holiday, I took a trip to Henan. In Zhengzhou, our destination was clear: we headed straight for the Drama Fantasy City located in Zhongmu County.
🏘️The Drama Fantasy City has a total of 21 theaters and 56 scenic spaces. We spent a whole day there, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and only managed to see half of the theaters, leaving some suspense for next time.
🎫【Tickets】
Make sure to choose your tickets in advance, with a 'one person, one seat' limit for 3 main plays
1-day regular ticket: 1 main play + small plays in the park
2-day pass: 3 main plays + small plays in the park, unlimited entry within 2 days
🕐【Hours】
Normal business hours are 10:00-21:00 (9:00-22:00 on holidays), with free luggage storage available.
📽️Three major theaters: Train Station, Li's Village, and Fantasy City. Try to see as much as you can. If you only have a one-day ticket, I recommend Li's Village or Fantasy City.
✅Recommended must-see small theaters:
1️⃣Emperor's Carriage Six: Gather around the archaeological pit-shaped stage, watch the time-travel dialogue between modern people and the Zhou king up close, and feel the impact of civilization.
2️⃣Waiting Hall: A novel marching-style stage design, classic stories stemming from a few items.
3️⃣The Seventh Locomotive Factory: Time-travel through several eras of railway people, very immersive.
4️⃣Submerged Years: Not sure what it wants to express, not even the director knows, purely a brilliant light show.
5️⃣Zhang Family Courtyard, outdoor, no need to queue, starts at night, a very exciting drama about family and country.
🍛Eat: The Wheat Wave Restaurant in the scenic area offers many branded chain dining options, with conscientious pricing, not expensive, no need to bring your own dry food haha.
The super photogenic spot is none other than Henan Drama Fantasy City
⛰【Attraction Guide】

💰Ticket price:
Adults 290 yuan for a one-day ticket, including one main theater and 18 small theaters, free for children under one meter.

1. The yellow rammed earth walls and green wheat fields are very photogenic, especially on the stairs with a bit of sky blue background;
2. Both large and small theaters are very attractive, each with its own characteristics, especially the Li Family Village and the Train Station theaters, immersive theaters, where you can feel like you're part of the scene;
3. There is a rich variety of food, many delicious options, though the prices are a bit expensive.
📌Little Tips:
Follow the park's official WeChat account in advance to check the opening hours for the day, take a look at the day's program schedule, there are also paper navigation maps inside the scenic area, pets must be checked in at the tourist service center, no lighters allowed, there are smoking areas inside the park, many theaters especially during holidays require lining up 30 minutes to 1 hour in advance, if you don't time it right you won't see anything, so plan your time wisely. Zhang Family Courtyard, I Am Henanese, Overturned Book Field, Qiankun Stage are all evening theaters.
Listen to advice! Don't go to 'Only in Henan' for just one day
'Only in Henan·Drama Fantasy City' has a total of 21 theaters of various sizes, which can accommodate nearly ten thousand people at the same time. It is currently one of the largest drama settlements in China with the longest performance duration. It's impossible to visit all in one day, as many theaters require time to digest their content. Plan for a two-day visit if you want to explore thoroughly. If you're selective about what you see, then it doesn't matter.
This is also the crowning work of director Wang Chaoge's 'Only' series.
The 'Fantasy City' composed of 56 squares, 'Only in Henan·Drama Fantasy City', aims not just for a round of applause, but to deliver a soul-stirring shock of Central Plains culture and Yellow River civilization.
Inside Henan Fantasy City, there are a hundred acres of farmland, with golden wheat waves rolling in the first half of the year and fiery red sorghum ears swaying in the second half; there is a rammed earth wall 328 meters long and 15 meters high, which is spectacular; the loess-colored wall seems to be pushed open by a 'narrow' gap, revealing the stories within to visitors; inside the wall, there are 56 squares, waiting to be unveiled like blind boxes.
Each visitor may choose a different path, and the experience they get will also be different. This uncertainty brings a sense of novelty and excitement, which is the psychological basis for the popularity of blind boxes nowadays. It stimulates the urge in consumers to revisit and deeply unlock.
