To get there, your gateway is Sanya Phoenix International Airport (SYX), just fifteen kilometres from the centre. Small, modern and well-designed, you can get through it in just a few minutes! Whether by bus, high-speed train or taxi, reaching the main bays is simple and affordable.

Essential information about Sanya Airport (SYX)

Opened in 1994, Sanya Phoenix is the second busiest airport in Hainan, after Haikou! It is the main gateway to the island's southern coast and its seaside resorts. In 2025, it even broke its record with over 22 million passengers.

The airport serves over 90 destinations, almost all of which are domestic, with a few international routes to Russia, Korea, South-East Asia, and Central Asia. Its single runway easily accommodates wide-body aircraft, a real asset for this tourist hub in the Hainan Free Trade Zone.

Transport to and from Sanya Airport

Sanya doesn't have a metro system: everything happens on the road or by train! Here are the four main options, to be chosen according to your budget and your destination on the island. All are accessible right outside the arrivals hall.

By high-speed train

This is the smartest option if you are staying near Sanya station or if you are exploring the island. The airport has its own high-speed train station, on the Hainan circular line.

• To Sanya Railway Station: allow about 7 to 10 minutes for the journey, for an indicative fare of around ¥7, then a city bus to your hotel.
• To Haikou (north of the island): allow about 1.5 to 3 hours depending on the route, with an estimated fare of ¥108 to ¥158 in second class.
• Where: follow the signs for the North exit, the station is a 3-minute walk away.

Trains are frequent and punctual. It is also the best way to reach cities on the east coast like Wanning or Lingshui. The airport station is integrated into the railway loop that circles Hainan, making it easy to travel from one end of the island to the other without having to go back by road.

By bus: airport shuttle and public bus

To get to the main tourist bays, the airport shuttle is simple and budget-friendly.

• Line 1 (to Yalong Bay): this serves Dadonghai and the hotels in Sanya Bay. Departures are roughly every hour, from 9 am to 2 am depending on flights.
• Line 2 (to Haitang Bay): this serves the 301 Hospital, Atlantis, and the large duty-free shopping centre. Around nine departures per day, from 10 am to 10 pm.
• Boarding: at the Block C commercial complex, opposite gate 5 of the domestic arrivals area (ground floor). Tickets available via cash, WeChat, or Alipay.

The public bus (lines 8, 24, 27 and 33) reaches the centre, Dadonghai and Yalong Bay every 10 to 15 minutes, from 6:30 am to 11:30 pm, for 5 to 8 ¥. It's the cheapest option, with the added bonus of a sea view on the right-hand side.

Taxis, private hire vehicles and parking

Official taxis are available 24/7 just outside the arrivals hall. Insist on using the meter, or use Didi—the Chinese equivalent of Uber—from the designated pick-up zone.

• Sanya Bay / city centre: ¥30 to ¥50, approximately 20 to 30 minutes.
• Dadonghai: ¥40 to ¥50, approximately 25 minutes.
• Yalong Bay: ¥60 to ¥80, approximately 35 minutes.
• Sanya Railway Station: ¥25 to ¥30, approximately 15 minutes.
• Night surcharge: +20%-30% after 11pm.

Terminals and services at Sanya Airport

An important point, often poorly explained: in Sanya, international flights do not depart from T2. They use a dedicated international terminal (marked "I"), while T1, T2 and the new T3 handle domestic traffic. Allow about twenty minutes to get from one terminal to the other.

Like most airports, Sanya Airport offers plenty of on-site services, whether you're there for a layover or departing:

• Free Wi-Fi ("SYX-Airport" network, SMS verification; foreign numbers sometimes have trouble connecting, so it's worth getting an eSIM).
• Dining: KFC, McDonald's, Starbucks, Costa, coconut cafés and Hainan chicken rice. The 7-Eleven convenience stores in the arrivals halls are open 24/7.
• Lounges: China Southern lounge and domestic VIP lounges; some may be accessible via programmes like Priority Pass or DragonPass, depending on current terms. Check access before you depart.
• Tax-free shopping: duty-free shops are available at T1 (domestic) and the international terminal. For a wider selection, the mega duty-free centres in the city centre and Haitang Bay are unbeatable; order online and collect at the airport.
• The international terminal also features a prayer room and a children's play area.

Where to eat at Sanya Airport?

Arrivals and departures: a step-by-step guide

The golden rule: arrive early! Allow around 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international flight, as security queues can become longer during busy periods.

Before departure

• Domestic flights: check-in is available at T1, T2 or T3, depending on your airline (Hainan Airlines uses T3). Self-service check-in kiosks are available for most airlines, while China Southern, Chongqing Airlines, Spring Airlines and 9 Air have dedicated check-in counters.
• International flights: head to the international terminal area, where dedicated gates are available after immigration.
• Cabin baggage: liquids are limited to 100 ml, and power banks are allowed up to 100 Wh.

On arrival

• Follow the signs for “Baggage Claim” to the baggage belts on the ground floor. Free luggage trolleys and changing rooms are available.
• For international flights, complete immigration first, then customs (use the green channel if you have nothing to declare, or the red channel if you do). You must declare items such as seeds, animals, and cash exceeding ¥20,000 in Chinese currency or the equivalent of US$5,000 in foreign currency.
• Lost baggage? The Lost and Found service is located at Gate 8 in T2. Consider installing a translation app, as English is not widely spoken beyond the main service counters.

Arrival requirements in Sanya: visa and regulations

Good news for UK travellers:

• 30-day visa-free entry: UK citizens can enter mainland China without a visa for stays of up to 30 days, without applying in advance, until 31 December 2026. A passport valid for at least 6 months is required. This is the simplest option.
• Hainan-specific visa policy: The island also offers a 30-day visa exemption for citizens of 59 countries. Since 9 February 2024, eligible travellers can enter Hainan independently without joining an organised tour through an approved travel agency.
• 240-hour visa-free transit: For travellers transiting to a third country, this 10-day visa-free transit scheme now covers more than 50 nationalities, including UK citizens.

In all cases, make sure you have a passport valid for at least 6 months, a return or onward ticket, and accommodation details. Your reason for travel must be for tourism, business, family visits, or transit.

Where to stay near Sanya Airport?

For an early flight or a late arrival, several hotels are just minutes from the airport, including the Sanya Phoenix Airport Hotel, right next to the terminals. The main bays (Sanya Bay, Dadonghai, Yalong Bay, Haitang Bay) are 20 to 40 minutes away.
