Tianya Haijiao: This coastal spot holds great symbolic and romantic value. It is known for its two huge rocks engraved with these words and for having once been considered the southernmost point of China.

Fantastic hotel! I have to admit the room was a bit small and the decor a little dated, but the location is excellent, and it offers incredible value for money. It's so convenient for the beach! And the service was truly exceptional – that professional, old-school hotel service. Whenever we had a problem, the front desk staff always considered things from a customer's perspective and actively helped resolve them. We received complimentary welcome fruit, the breakfast was extensive, and the airport drop-off service was very convenient. This time, we had noisy neighbors, and the hotel promptly helped us change rooms and even offered a complimentary afternoon tea. Every front desk staff member sincerely told guests to contact them anytime with any issues. We even received complimentary coconut water when we left. I saw pictures online before coming and thought the sea view was beautiful, but I didn't expect to be so lucky! During my stay, the rain cleared up just in time, and the sea view from this hotel was absolutely stunning!
Both the Yuehai Restaurant and the infinity pool offered incredible ocean views. The turquoise water, sandy beach, and coconut trees were super therapeutic and instantly brightened my mood.
The room was also very spacious and airy, with a separate wet and dry area, and it was spotlessly clean. The mattress was just the right firmness, making for a very comfortable stay. The staff were all friendly and polite. I ate well and slept well here; I give this experience a perfect score 💯!
🍽️ I particularly want to praise the hotel's dining – they truly understand what vacationers want!
What surprised me the most was that the buffet breakfast was open until 1:30 PM! How friendly is that for late risers?! Plus, the restaurant's terrace has a super beautiful sea view. Eating breakfast while looking at the ocean was an amazing experience.

The hotel had a wide variety of food choices, with plenty of options. I highly recommend the revolving BBQ buffet on the 5th floor! Not only was the ambiance great, but the food quality was exceptional. The freshness was visible (especially the freshly sliced beef, with its beautiful marbling). The sizzling grilled meat paired with lettuce was incredible! The seafood buffet and roast duck also looked very tempting. The hotel's location in Xiaodonghai is great. While it's an older property, the facilities are well-maintained, and the rooms exceeded my expectations. It offers good value for money. During holidays, getting to the city center can be slow due to traffic from Luhuitou. I hope the hotel improves its pool management; it's currently subpar. People were in the pool without swim caps and even wearing shoes, which makes you wonder about the water quality. On the plus side, access to the beach is very convenient and close, perfect for families with children. However, Xiaodonghai has many underwater rocks, making it a bit uncomfortable to swim from the shore. The concierge service was excellent – very friendly and proactive in helping with luggage. This hotel was originally just a one-night stopover, but the overall facilities, lounge, and room type turned out to be a pleasant surprise. In China, you probably won't find a JW Marriott at this price again.
The hotel is located on a rocky beach in Dadonghai, without sand, but offering a different experience: mudflats foraging and swimming in the sea (there's a recessed, shallow area on the rocky beach in front of the hotel that's safer at low tide). The overall sea view isn't bad at all; one side offers a view of the curved Dadonghai beach, while the other faces the lighthouse.
The hotel facilities are quite comprehensive, with a long family pool and a shallow children's pool. Armbands and full-body swimming life jackets are provided free of charge, and there are even cylindrical holders for shoes. There are numerous lifeguards, strategically placed so that every blind spot of one lifeguard is covered by another. This is completely different from the setup at other five-star hotels in Sanya, and the pool closes at 10 PM, which received unanimous praise from my family. The outdoor open-air children's playground is similar; for younger children, the playground staff will even follow behind to supervise, truly demonstrating JW's high standards.
We booked an executive sea-view room in the East Wing, a room type that directly faces the sunrise over Rabbit Tail Ridge. Plus, it has a huge balcony, instantly eliminating any feeling of a small room.
Since we only stayed for one day, we couldn't experience many of the dining options. However, seeing the hotel selling egg pancakes for 15 RMB and refreshing Qingshubiang for 20 RMB, I immediately felt that the prices were accessible to the general public. The executive lounge's food could only be described as average Marriott quality (I suspect this might be due to the hotel's price point), but it's one of the few resort hotels that even has an executive lounge. The breakfast experience was excellent, with stewed soups, JW noodles, numerous egg preparations, fermented grain vinegar, sour noodles, Hou'an noodles, and various fresh juices. Among the three hotels we stayed at in Sanya, this was the lowest-priced hotel, yet it had the highest breakfast standards.
The service was excellent overall. Whether it was the lounge attendant helping us with a last-minute room change (and getting us a room with a large balcony), or the front desk staff running out to find the mini-train because my child wanted to ride it when it was almost closing time, or the proactive luggage service and reminders from our butler Una, it all truly met the high standards of a luxury five-star hotel!
Some suggestions:
1. The open space on the large balcony could really benefit from some decorations and lounge chairs; I think it would enhance the resort feel.
2. Stronger signage is needed from the East Wing to the West Wing breakfast area. It's quite hard to find since you have to take an elevator.
Overall, it was a very pleasant stay. Aside from the lack of a sandy beach, this is a high-standard, high-value-for-money resort hotel!FromSAR 287

Coming to Sanya, staying in a villa is a must! This time, I stayed in the Pullman's Thai-style Deluxe Pool Villa, and it completely exceeded my expectations!
🏡Ambiance: As soon as I entered the room, I was blown away by the massive private pool. It's a truly private, standalone space, surrounded by lush greenery, giving off a strong Southeast Asian resort vibe. It's fantastic for photos! Getting to the beach requires walking through the Marriott's side for a few hundred meters. The water in Yalong Bay is truly crystal clear.
🏊♂️Facilities: The villa space is very generous, and the wet/dry separation is excellent. The bathtub is right by the window, so you can enjoy the view while bathing. The private pool water was very clean, and it was incredibly comfortable to play in the water this season. I spent a whole day in the water and didn't want to get out.
🍽️Dining & Service: The hotel breakfast offered a rich variety and tasted good. The butler service was very thoughtful; any issues during my stay were responded to quickly, and they even helped arrange buggy transfers.
🌟Summary: Although I booked using a voucher, the service was absolutely not compromised. If you're looking for a quiet, private getaway where you can fully enjoy swimming, Pullman Yalong Bay is definitely the top choice. The experience was absolutely perfect!FromSAR 383

In mid-August, all the hotels in Sanya went crazy with price hikes. For example, Tianyu's prices tripled, making it feel completely unnecessary to book. Even very ordinary hotels at least doubled their rates. Amidst this wave of price gouging, only Grand Mercure quietly offered a low price of 500 RMB. And seeing room photos posted by others on TikTok, I thought it looked great, which made me immediately place an order. My flight was delayed, so I arrived at the hotel in the middle of the night. The young lady at the front desk upgraded me to a family suite, which was super spacious. It had two large beds, one of which was a 2.2-meter king-size bed with an extra-large duvet, so the kids could roll around as much as they wanted without a problem. The complimentary seafood dinner was delicious, and the creamy clams were incredibly tasty. The staff were all very enthusiastic; if you stood in the lobby for a moment, a staff member would immediately come up with a smile and ask if you needed help, which was very heartwarming. There's a children's water slide, and both big and small kids had a great time playing. There's a bubble party at 4 PM. It's a quick five-minute walk to Yalong Bay if you're fast, a bit slower with kids. Downstairs is Baihua Valley, with KFC, Pizza Hut, Heytea, and other stores. The Ah T milk tea near the beach is also very good, but the coconuts and fruits from the street vendors there weren't tasty.FromSAR 171

Five-star review! I have to commend the hotel's service. Check-in was smooth, and the most pleasant surprise was being offered a late check-out without even asking – so thoughtful, it saved us from rushing our itinerary. Upon leaving, we were also given a complimentary souvenir bear, a really sweet gesture.

This time, my husband and I stayed at the Sanya Howard Johnson Resort, and our experience was extremely satisfying! The hotel is located in Sanya Bay, with beautiful garden surroundings. The weather was clear, and the sea view was expansive, creating a wonderful vacation atmosphere. A special thanks to our butler, KAY, for the thoughtful and attentive service. Any issues were addressed promptly, making our entire stay very comfortable. The room was clean and cozy, and the hotel's amenities, including the swimming pools and gardens, were excellent. This is my third time in Sanya, and my first time in Yalong Bay. I chose the Hilton and was extremely satisfied. Our butler, Aven, contacted us in advance for a direct check-in and vehicle registration. Although we didn't stay in the classic Building 8, Building 2 was also quite good with excellent views. The public areas are beautiful, and the room was clean and tidy. The breakfast had a good variety, and even though there was a short wait of a few minutes, the crowd control was well managed. We spent two days by the hotel pool, and the beach was also very close. Both the beach and pool management were excellent, with complimentary swimming rings and welcome drinks, which really enhanced our experience. The pickled sour soup and Spanish mackerel included in our package were delivered directly to our room after booking with Butler Aven. This hotel stay was quite dissatisfying. I called five days in advance to ask the butler to contact me early, but it was as if the request was never made. I still hadn't heard from anyone by the morning of the day before check-in, and I had to chase them to finally get in touch with the butler. The butler seemed a bit irresponsible; once something was noted, it was as if he considered it done and didn't follow up. My luck was really bad with him. As a result, none of my noted requests were fulfilled. However, my room was upgraded again, and I got the seventh-floor room I wanted. But then, they didn't provide amenities according to the number of guests. I was so disheartened that I didn't want to bother the butler anymore, feeling it was useless. So, I called the front desk around 9 PM, asking for the room to be tidied up. They finally came to clean it at 5 PM after I got back from swimming and was about to shower... I suddenly felt a bit sorry for the butler, his job must be tough. On the first day in the new room, the battery cover for the electronic door lock fell off. On the second day, I found the bathroom door lock was broken and couldn't be locked. Well, I guess it's fine if a family doesn't lock the door. On the third day, after eating at the Executive Lounge, we were a party of two. I told the staff not to clear my table, and when we returned, all the other tables around ours were untouched, but ours was cleared. There were just too many things to complain about. After thinking about all these frustrating incidents, I asked the butler for a complimentary day at the Executive Lounge, which was refused. We had discussed it before, whether it could be complimentary, and it was also refused, so I paid what I thought was a reasonable price for the Executive Lounge access. And then, I got the usual perks one can get from a butler, like late check-out and so on.
Let me talk about the good things. The staff at the go-kart area are definitely number one! There's a large lawn, so I recommend bringing some outdoor gear. The mini-train is free, and the kids' play area is a great place for children to burn off energy; it doesn't feel stuffy. The children's pool is too shallow, only 0.13-0.15m deep. There are water slides suitable for kids and also slides for adults. Feeding the animals at the petting zoo is a bit expensive at 38 for a tiny portion. In the off-season, couldn't they give a bit more? The little lambs rushed to grab the food before I even started feeding them; they seemed starving.
The night activities were quite fun; crab catching was the best. Only those who signed up received tools. Next time, I might bring my own spotlight. It's a shame you can't catch crabs every day. The firefly activity costs extra; the fireflies are tiny, so don't expect a lot of them, as they are small in size.
Overall, you get what you pay for. At this price, including food, don't expect much in terms of service. The activities are decent, and there are things to do. The Executive Lounge is quite convenient for seniors or children. I never managed to use the afternoon tea, always missing it. The food isn't very good, and neither is the takeout (I miss Yalong Bay). The area is quite large and very deep, so it's a bit far from the beach, not a beachfront property. I chose this hotel through Trip.com, thinking their service would be better, but to my surprise, no concierge proactively reached out on WeChat to ask about my needs in advance. Upon check-in, I wasn't even told where the breakfast restaurant was or where the dinner included in my package was located; I had to call and ask myself. I feel the staff's attitude needs improvement. Perhaps there are just too many guests at this Marriott that they can't keep up? As for the highly-praised breakfast, I honestly don't think there's anything particularly special about it. It might seem good on the first day, but by the second, I was already tired of it. If you don't mind the public beach at Yalong Bay, you can consider staying here. However, people constantly selling coconut water, swimming rings, etc., on the beach is quite annoying. It feels less like a relaxing vacation and more like being in a tourist trap. The cleaning auntie was quite diligent, though she did leave her cleaning cloth in the room. The rooms on both sides of the hallway meant that the morning cleaning was quite noisy, and the soundproofing isn't great. We did our research and chose this place for our couples' getaway. We went in with a peaceful mindset to experience Ban Shan Ban Dao, and it met and even exceeded our expectations. The shuttle service was excellent, and all the staff we encountered while walking around the hotel or going out were friendly and smiled, which was very pleasant and gave a lovely feeling of human connection. The breakfast was also fantastic with a wide variety, and the fruits were fresher overall compared to other places I've stayed. We also booked the Executive Lounge this time, and it met expectations. The two days we arrived were rainy and stormy due to a typhoon, which allowed us to slow down and enjoy the lounge – having some breakfast during the day, afternoon tea, and cocktails in the evening 🍹. It was a very comfortable holiday experience. The butler service was also very attentive; our butler Jenny was responsive and polite, contacting us the day before check-in and keeping an eye on our arrival status. Before visiting this paradise, it's important to take the weather and crowd levels into account. November to April is considered high season, as the weather is stable and the temperatures are pleasant.

🥢 What to Eat in Sanya
Sanya's cuisine combines the taste of the sea with the intensity of tropical flavours. You'll find everything from hearty stews to seafood and meat dishes. Without a doubt, trying the island's gastronomy is an experience you simply cannot miss.
- Coconut chicken: tender chicken cooked in the pure juice of three green coconuts. A sweet broth with an intense coconut aroma.
- Zaopo: a sweet and sour broth fermented with rice wine, in which fresh seafood is cooked. A refreshing and addictive flavour.
- Fresh seafood: a coastal essential. Try the steamed grouper or the stir-fried crab. Buy them at the market and have them cooked on the spot.
- Hainan noodles: thin noodles with fried peanuts, bean sprouts, pork, and a special sauce. A classic that never fails.
- Tengqiao fried ribs: ribs marinated in honey and fried until crispy on the outside and tender on the inside.
- Qing Bu Liang: a refreshing dessert with coconut milk, fruit, red beans, taro, and tapioca. Perfect for beating the heat.
🚇 Transport Options in Sanya
Sanya has its own international airport: Sanya Phoenix International Airport, with the code SYX.
Although Sanya doesn't have an underground system, it does have an 8.37-kilometre tram line with 15 stops. It connects the city centre with Sanya railway station, and a ticket costs around £0.35.
The most budget-friendly option is the local bus. The city has an extensive network of routes connecting the centre with the beaches and other places of interest. Tickets start from £0.20, but bear in mind that journey times can be longer during rush hour.
For getting around more comfortably, you can use taxis or ride-hailing apps like DiDi. Some orange vehicles identified with the “Hainan Trusted Pay” logo allow you to pay with international bank cards.
Renting a car can be a great alternative if you're travelling in a group or want to explore other parts of Hainan Island at your own pace. One of the advantages is that the island's motorways are toll-free. Plus, for short trips along the coast, it's also common to hire a bicycle or an electric scooter.
