Chongqing's Must-See Districts & Neighbourhoods 🏮

Chongqing is a city of fascinating contrasts, with each district offering a wildly different vibe. From bustling shopping centres to charming, cobbled streets of yesteryear, here are the must-visit neighbourhoods to truly uncover the rich tapestry of this extraordinary city.

Hongya Cave (洪崖洞): A Fairy-Tale Wonderland

Your first essential stop in Chongqing has to be Hongya Cave! It's THE iconic building of the city, and you'll spot it in every single photo. This traditional architectural complex, perched on the cliffside, boasts eleven storeys of stilt houses in the region's typical Diaojiaolou style.

Picture this: red lanterns strung everywhere and intricately carved wooden balconies that make the whole place feel like it's sprung straight from a Japanese animation! (Seriously, many visitors can't help but spot a direct nod to Miyazaki's enchanting films!).

During the day, you'll love exploring the local craft shops and indulging in the incredible Sichuan specialities at the restaurants. But as the sun begins to set, that's when the real enchantment unfolds: from 7 PM, thousands of lights burst into life, illuminating each level and creating a breathtaking spectacle that dances and reflects in the Jialing River's waters below!

📍Top Tip: Entry is completely free, which also explains why it can get incredibly busy!

💡Trip.com's Insider Tip: To avoid the crowds (especially at weekends), we recommend arriving in the late afternoon and heading straight to the top floor by lift. For those postcard-perfect photos, make your way to Qiansimen Bridge or the Grand Theatre terrace – you'll be treated to a spectacular panoramic view, complete with its full reflection in the water.

Jiefangbei (解放碑): China's Times Square

Next up, set your sights on Jiefangbei, the vibrant heart of modern Chongqing! Everything here revolves around the Liberation Monument, an iconic tower erected in 1947, which today offers a striking contrast to the ultra-modern skyscrapers that now encircle it.

In the evening, the atmosphere shifts once more. The enormous LED screens adorning the facades light up, neon signs flash everywhere, and the bar terraces quickly fill up.

Ciqikou (磁器口): A Timeless Ancient Town

Get ready for a complete change of pace with Ciqikou, an ancient Ming town that has miraculously resisted the relentless march of urbanisation.

Its winding cobbled streets, timber-framed houses with curved roofs, and artisan shops immediately whisk you away to another era. This charming district earned its nickname, 'Porcelain Town', thanks to the countless workshops that have been crafting ceramics here for centuries.

In Ciqikou, you'll find plenty to explore, including:

  • Stall after stall, each brimming with hand-painted porcelains,
  • Traditional embroideries
  • Historic tea houses offering a welcome respite in an authentic setting.
  • And most importantly, keep an eye out for those famous Mahua (麻花), utterly delicious golden twisted doughnuts whose incredible aroma fills the entire neighbourhood!

📍Top Tip: Even with the undeniable crowds, this spot holds onto a genuine charm that even the locals still adore. Plan for 2-3 hours to explore fully at your own pace. Admission is free (but make sure to save some pennies for those delicious treats!).

Nanshan (南山): Lush City Escape

When the city centre's hustle and bustle starts to weigh you down, make a beeline for Nanshan! This charming residential district, nestled in the hills south of the Yangtze, offers a truly impressive contrast: lush greenery, fresher air, delightful cafes with shaded terraces, and a wonderfully relaxed vibe. You'll feel like you've stepped into a completely different city!

Nanshan's crowning glory is undoubtedly its One Tree Observation Deck (一棵树观景台), offering arguably the most spectacular views of Chongqing. From this incredible vantage point, you can take in the entire city, with its two majestic rivers winding gracefully between the towering buildings – and you'll finally understand why it's affectionately known as the Mountain City.

📍Trip.com's Top Tip: For all you keen walkers out there, Nanshan Forest Park is home to some wonderful marked trails, perfect for stretching those legs!

Our stay at Meriton Suites Kent Street was fantastic! The location is right in the heart of the city — walking distance to Darling Harbour, Town Hall Station, and plenty of shops and restaurants. The suite was spacious, modern, and spotless, with a fully equipped kitchen and laundry facilities that made our trip so much more convenient. The bed was very comfortable, and we loved having a separate living area to relax in after a long day exploring Sydney. The staff were friendly and helpful, always checking in to make sure we had everything we needed. Having an indoor pool, spa, and gym on-site was a great bonus too. Highly recommend Meriton Suites Kent Street for anyone looking for comfort, space, and excellent value in a central Sydney location.

This is a beautiful hotel set right in the heart of downtown Sydney. We loved our stay here. The staff were very attentive to anything we needed and happy to help. The room was clean and very beatifully appointed with luxurious features. The buffet breakfast was amazing with delicious cold and hot food and fresh fruit and pastries and great coffee. We loved the heritage feeling of this hotel and how central it was to many of Sydney's landmarks and must see places! We highly recommend The Fullerton Hotel Sydney and would love to come back again.

The staff were very helpful. We were able to get early access to our room. Loved the 12pm check out too! The pool, spa and steam room were lovely. Sadly our bathroom was very smelly making it unpleasant to have the door open. As we were only there one night and at a function until late we didn’t try to change rooms but did report it at check out. All in all a pleasant stay.

The location is fantastic, located by the Darling Harbour, you can reach the Aquarium and Darling Harbour within 3-5 minutes. You can also access Sydney CBD (QVB etc.) easily. For the staff, they are super friendly and helpful. Despite I didn't request a daily room cleaning service, they tidied my room every day. If you don't want to have such service, you can definitely require not to too. The view of my room is amazing, you can enjoy the view of Darling Harbour. And one more thing which I found quite important is that the room has a perfect soundproof. Since it's winter in August, it's quite cold in Sydney. The lobby has very warm temperature and cozy vibe. However, the room's air conditioning didn't provide a warm temperature that I satisfied, the room temperature remains between 18-20 °C during our stay, it would be perfect if it's like 23-25 °C. And this was the only down side I can think of, other than that, I had a perfect stay!

Jiangbei Area Chongqing|3.43km from city centre
Hi, globally the staying was quiet. Clean room. Good location close to métro station However, the service is not very satisfying. The staff at the lobby know how to provide proper service to native chinese speakers. However, when it's about non chinese speakers, they don't feel confident or they lack the English skills to provide a satisfying quality of service. I did not appreciate how they all looked so unavailable to ensure my needs were being satisfied properly. It was the case when I asked questions about : - Wi-Fi password (no instructions written provided in English and not making sure I was able to connect before they cut the line). It asked twice to lobby and then to a staff in the Corridor. They did not show me on smartphone how to connect to wifi. - laundry service. Instructions on Washing machine are confusing. Nothing indicates its automatic and should be used without touching setting buttons ir where to put clean liquid and where to put the softener liquid. Also nothing says about the time where an employee working at laundry would he available. If your staff gets too Manu questions from customers, have 1 staff member only for FAQ. The lobby staff of check in check out should je focused on the customer in front not all customers from every where. It feels like a restaurant so far the way your staff interact. ----- Now, another thing about the hôtel. When I checked in the bedroom. The Window was open. It clearly says the Windows should be closed to prevent mosquitoes getting inside the bedroom. I suppose the staff in charge of cleaning left it open. Anyway, there was a few of flyers in the bedroom. About the elevator number, the staff was telling me to take elevator number 3 to Access my bedroom. However, the number of elevator is written in chinese and not in digital number or English. This lack of English version make it confusing for non chinese speakers. I met a few foreigners who were lost, confused just like me. Finally there was an elevator in the middle where customers could call and access but it was under construction. Not safe, not professionnal at all. Please ban this use of elevator. Make it clear for every one. Last thing, if your hôtel is only for chinese speakers make it clear. The trip application says your staff can speak multiple languages which is absolutely note the case. Also the sockets provided in bedroom don't have any international sockets so i could not use my charger without adapter to use my laptop. Kind regards

The hotel's location is excellent, right next to Bayi Road Food Street, making it super convenient to get anywhere. It's just a few minutes' walk to Jiefangbei. The rooms were very satisfying, and I've already recommended it to friends. The front desk staff were also great, very warm and attentive. I'd definitely choose this hotel again if I have the chance. Highly recommend! I booked four rooms at once, and since it wasn't peak season, the front desk upgraded our rooms, which had fantastic views.

The hotel's location is super convenient, right near all the major shopping malls in Guanyinqiao, making dining and shopping incredibly easy. I've lost count of how many times I've stayed here. Even the expats from my company, who used to prefer serviced apartments, now choose this hotel thanks to my recommendation. This time, Front Desk Agent Xiao Zhang was very enthusiastic and even upgraded my room type, which was a pleasant surprise. Thumbs up! And I have to mention, the hotel breakfast is truly amazing with such a wide variety of choices, it's almost overwhelming!

I highly recommend to stay here for its location, amenities, breakfast/lunch, value for money. The hotel is about 5 mins walk to Jiefangbei & about 15 mins easy walk to Shibati (make sure you google to walk in the right direction). We walked to Choatianmen (Raffles city) too. Easy 20-25 mins walk. Pls note that to walk from hotel to Hongyadong, you have to walk towards Jiefangbei direction & then find the steps to walk down the flight of steps. Same for walking from Chaotianmen to Hongyadong, you have to find the staircase to walk down the flight of steps. Glenview hotel is near WFC tower. Just look up & walk towards WFC tower direction to get your bearings. The cool weather made the walking bearable. There are a few medium size malls near hotel & food street is about 5 mins walk (near Bayi plaza).

This is the hotel I've been thinking about the most out of all the places I've stayed in the past two months! First off, this package from Trip.com was incredible value. We stayed on the executive floor, and we could check in while relaxing in the lounge there. The evening happy hour was a lifesaver because our child can't eat spicy food, which made dining out for local cuisine difficult. We discovered an issue with our room, and after speaking with the duty manager, they promptly moved us to a new room and even upgraded it. This really made us feel like we were experiencing true five-star hotel service. Plus, the hotel's location is excellent; it's right next to Jiefangbei, making it super convenient to get anywhere.

Our room located on 33rd Floor has a good view of city. Walking distance to food street and restaurants. We didn’t have to wait long for elevators as it came quite fast. Building is occupied by maybe 3 hotels. Go the extreme left for check-in. Reception crew were responsive and polite. Room is spacious and equipments were good. It’s designed like a service apartment with washer. All the usual amenities are well provided except for shoehorn and bathrobe. Toilet is with bidet. Didn’t like the the smell of toiletries though as it too strong and unnatural. Housekeeping did a very good job in cleaning and replenishing. There was always a soft beeping sound whenever we stood near pantry area. We couldn’t find out where it came from. Nevertheless, we find it a reasonable priced room and would recommend anyone who wish to stay in this area. Our room included 1 breakfast daily but you can combine 2 days’ worth for 2 persons. By the way, water will leak into dry area even shower door is tightly closed. Thank you for a good stay.
