Chongqing's Must-See Districts & Neighbourhoods 🏮

Chongqing is a city of fascinating contrasts, with each district offering a wildly different vibe. From bustling shopping centres to charming, cobbled streets of yesteryear, here are the must-visit neighbourhoods to truly uncover the rich tapestry of this extraordinary city.

Hongya Cave (洪崖洞): A Fairy-Tale Wonderland

Your first essential stop in Chongqing has to be Hongya Cave! It's THE iconic building of the city, and you'll spot it in every single photo. This traditional architectural complex, perched on the cliffside, boasts eleven storeys of stilt houses in the region's typical Diaojiaolou style.

Picture this: red lanterns strung everywhere and intricately carved wooden balconies that make the whole place feel like it's sprung straight from a Japanese animation! (Seriously, many visitors can't help but spot a direct nod to Miyazaki's enchanting films!).

During the day, you'll love exploring the local craft shops and indulging in the incredible Sichuan specialities at the restaurants. But as the sun begins to set, that's when the real enchantment unfolds: from 7 PM, thousands of lights burst into life, illuminating each level and creating a breathtaking spectacle that dances and reflects in the Jialing River's waters below!

📍Top Tip: Entry is completely free, which also explains why it can get incredibly busy!

💡Trip.com's Insider Tip: To avoid the crowds (especially at weekends), we recommend arriving in the late afternoon and heading straight to the top floor by lift. For those postcard-perfect photos, make your way to Qiansimen Bridge or the Grand Theatre terrace – you'll be treated to a spectacular panoramic view, complete with its full reflection in the water.

Jiefangbei (解放碑): China's Times Square

Next up, set your sights on Jiefangbei, the vibrant heart of modern Chongqing! Everything here revolves around the Liberation Monument, an iconic tower erected in 1947, which today offers a striking contrast to the ultra-modern skyscrapers that now encircle it.

In the evening, the atmosphere shifts once more. The enormous LED screens adorning the facades light up, neon signs flash everywhere, and the bar terraces quickly fill up.

Ciqikou (磁器口): A Timeless Ancient Town

Get ready for a complete change of pace with Ciqikou, an ancient Ming town that has miraculously resisted the relentless march of urbanisation.

Its winding cobbled streets, timber-framed houses with curved roofs, and artisan shops immediately whisk you away to another era. This charming district earned its nickname, 'Porcelain Town', thanks to the countless workshops that have been crafting ceramics here for centuries.

In Ciqikou, you'll find plenty to explore, including:

  • Stall after stall, each brimming with hand-painted porcelains,
  • Traditional embroideries
  • Historic tea houses offering a welcome respite in an authentic setting.
  • And most importantly, keep an eye out for those famous Mahua (麻花), utterly delicious golden twisted doughnuts whose incredible aroma fills the entire neighbourhood!

📍Top Tip: Even with the undeniable crowds, this spot holds onto a genuine charm that even the locals still adore. Plan for 2-3 hours to explore fully at your own pace. Admission is free (but make sure to save some pennies for those delicious treats!).

Nanshan (南山): Lush City Escape

When the city centre's hustle and bustle starts to weigh you down, make a beeline for Nanshan! This charming residential district, nestled in the hills south of the Yangtze, offers a truly impressive contrast: lush greenery, fresher air, delightful cafes with shaded terraces, and a wonderfully relaxed vibe. You'll feel like you've stepped into a completely different city!

Nanshan's crowning glory is undoubtedly its One Tree Observation Deck (一棵树观景台), offering arguably the most spectacular views of Chongqing. From this incredible vantage point, you can take in the entire city, with its two majestic rivers winding gracefully between the towering buildings – and you'll finally understand why it's affectionately known as the Mountain City.

📍Trip.com's Top Tip: For all you keen walkers out there, Nanshan Forest Park is home to some wonderful marked trails, perfect for stretching those legs!

My stay was overall good, I can't complain. Price per value is very good. The room was pretty nice and I liked the buffet breakfast. The metro line is also quite close. The receptions were nice and professional. There's self service laundry. However, there are many things that I would expect from a Ramada hotel and I didn't find here. Nobody spoke English, the swimming pool was not available, there isn't laundry service, maintenance in the room could be better, no fridge.

They put decorations for me swan. 🤣 The view is nice. Mostly family couples are staying. Breakfast: so far ok. Juice is not fresh just a regular juice. No salmon !! Only 2 types ham , cheese was good, buns not so good mostly just taste plain bread. Mixed egg was good. I don't eat Chinese food so not so much to choose from. Breakfast is 4/10. Stuff is good. Swimming pool: NO CONDITIONER AT ALL so hot. Inside the locker room so hot, outside so hot. 6/10. Has jacuzzi and 2 sauna. Good. Has water bottles. Overall is ok 7/10

We stayed 4 days with my family of 6 adults and 4 very young infants in this hotel, the service was amazing, the communication was excellent. Everyone of the staff was very helpful and friendly. Comfortable beds, clean sheets, every clean bathroom, good airconditioning. The breakfast was amazing, variation of western and eastern was very good. All 4 days we got different breakfast that was amazing. Location for us was excellent, right below our hotel is the Raffles City Mall, very modern, spacious, and clean. Lots of stores food and international brands of products. I want to thank MR. Yang and everyone of the staff to make our stay comfortable and safe. We will definitely come back to this hotel.

Although the hotel has been around for a while, its decor doesn't feel old-fashioned at all. The rooms are spacious, and the facilities are well-maintained. This time, I booked a twin room for my parents and a king room for my child and me, and both accommodations were very comfortable. A special shout-out to Echo and Vaness for proactively arranging non-smoking rooms for us. The hotel is directly connected to a commercial complex, which is incredibly convenient for daily necessities or last-minute purchases. The location is superb: it's very close to Beicheng Tianjie and Xingguang 68. Guanyinqiao is also within easy walking distance, and Beicang Cultural & Creative Park is just a 300-meter stroll away. This makes it an ideal choice for families looking to explore Chongqing's main shopping and entertainment districts.

The room is old. This is fine, but there is no fan in the bathroom. The room smells of the bathroom the whole time I am here. The entire hotel is very nice but old. However, the service was great. As expected at a Hilton. The pool is nice, but a little small. Gym is great. This is 4min walk from a metro line and 20min DiDi from any location you want to go.

The hotel boasts an incredibly convenient location, right next to the bustling Jiefangbei, with all dining, entertainment, and shopping options just steps away. Upon check-in, the staff proactively asked if we needed earplugs and offered solutions for a peaceful night's sleep. Any questions or concerns we had were addressed promptly and efficiently. After our four-night stay, a hotel staff member even called to inquire about our experience, which truly demonstrates their dedication to guest satisfaction. As an incredible gesture, they even couriered local Chongqing specialties to us via SF Express! Your warm and thoughtful service is absolutely outstanding! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Perfect 👏🏼👏🏼 Hotel staff also gave us free discount vouchers for Cruise ride and observation tower. Staff is very patient and they resolve every issue. Night City view of Time Square is mesmerizing 😊 💕 Overall, a must stay hotel for anyone who wants to stay and enjoy night life in Chongqing. Metro station, Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street and Hongyadong everything is so near. The hotel might seem a little aged at first but the service and interior still wow from the first moment you step in. The room I booked was clean and spacious. The housekeeping did their job excellent. They have everything inside you could ask; washing detergent, iron, laundry rack, etc. Front desk was superb; fast check-in, great advice when asking for recommendations, and efficient when asking for items like extra water. The robot was a great thing to have as all my delivery are sent to my doorstep. All in all, this is a 10/10 solid stay. Oh, the breakfast have a great great selection and taste great too. And there is vending machine in lobby if u need any last minute groceries or even a wake up coffee. Thank you.

I stayed at Indition Hotel in Chongqing and overall had a great experience. The room was very clean and well-maintained. The view was slightly disappointing though — I couldn’t see the famous glowing houses I was hoping for, and I was told all other rooms were fully booked. That said, the view was still impressive since I was on the 37th floor, very high up, and you could see far with little to no buildings blocking the view. The hallways actually looked even better than those at the Birkin and Iseya Hotels, which are located in the same building. Overall, a very comfortable and pleasant stay — just wish the view had been a bit more iconic.

I had expected an older five-star hotel to have outdated facilities, but to my pleasant surprise, it was much better than anticipated. The hotel was comfortable and stylish, and the room was spacious and very clean. The service was incredibly attentive. The breakfast was excellent; in fact, to enjoy it for an extra day, we extended our stay by another night. Although the hotel upgraded our room for free on this last day at my request, because I extended our stay directly at the hotel front desk (rather than through Ctrip), the price turned out to be significantly more expensive than booking via Ctrip. In essence, I effectively paid for the upgrade myself.

This time, on a trip to Chongqing with my child, we specifically chose the Grand Hyatt Chongqing as our base for a journey combining the city's unique 'Fog City' charm and 'red education' (revolutionary history). It turned out to be an absolutely brilliant choice! The entire stay far exceeded our expectations! • **Exceptional Concierge and Front Desk Service:** The hotel's concierge and front desk staff were incredibly helpful with our family trip. Not only were they warm and friendly, but they also provided extremely practical transportation routes and advice. Whether it was seeing the night view at Hongyadong, taking the Yangtze River Cableway, experiencing the Liziba monorail going through a building, or exploring the ancient town charm of Ciqikou, the staff tailored optimal and energy-saving routes for us, always keeping our child in mind. They even advised us on how to avoid crowds during peak times, which saved us so much hassle! They also recommended we see the 1949 Grand Theatre performance, which was breathtaking and highly educational. What truly impressed us was that when we mentioned wanting to introduce our child to 'red culture' education, they immediately put together a thoughtful itinerary of suitable nearby 'red' attractions (like Zhou Enlai's Former Residence, Guiyuan, and the New China Daily Office, all conveniently located), aligning with our time and interests, and provided detailed directions. This level of care and professionalism made our educational journey incredibly smooth and enriching! • **Excellent Buffet Selection and Quality:** The hotel's breakfast buffet offered an incredibly wide variety, with both Chinese and Western options. The ingredients were fresh, and our child especially loved the hot dishes and pastries! We also tried the dinner buffet once, which was equally satisfying, particularly the Chongqing Noodles! I must give a special shout-out to the Chongqing Noodles (Xiao Mian) served at the restaurant! As a must-try local specialty, the bowl we had at the hotel was absolutely authentic! The broth was rich, the spicy and numbing flavors were perfectly balanced, the noodles had a great chew, and the portion size was generous. Our little one couldn't get enough of it, asking for it every day, and it became one of the most memorable culinary highlights of our trip. • **Impeccably Clean and Comfortable Room:** Our room was spotless and very well-maintained, meeting international hotel hygiene standards. This gave us great peace of mind, especially traveling with a child. The bedding was soft and comfortable; sinking into it instantly relieved our fatigue, ensuring a good night's sleep. The room's layout was well-designed, and the amenities were modern and convenient. The hotel's soundproofing was excellent, allowing our child to sleep soundly through the night and us adults to get proper rest, preparing us for the next day's activities. Beyond the transportation assistance mentioned earlier, every staff member we encountered throughout our stay – from the front desk, concierge, and restaurant staff to the housekeeping team – was always smiling, incredibly friendly, eager to help, and quick to respond. We felt truly welcomed and valued. Next time we visit 'Mountain City' Chongqing, there's no doubt this will still be my top choice!

I stayed here with my child for the drone competition finals, and the hotel's proximity to the venue was a huge plus. The breakfast spread offered a great variety, and the hotel itself was very pleasant. We were on a high floor, and the view from our room was beautiful. Transportation was also very convenient, with direct bus routes to attractions like the Great Hall of the People and the Three Gorges Museum. Being close to a local residential area meant we had access to lots of delicious evening food options; we especially enjoyed the Chuan Chuan (skewers) and BBQ. A special shout-out to Wendy at the front desk – she was incredibly kind and even gave us an adorable little hotel bear keychain!

FAQ — What to Do in Chongqing ❓

  • What to do in Chongqing in 1 day?

Focus on the essentials: Hongya Cave (morning), Jiefangbei, then the Yangtze Cable Car (£3). End with hotpot + a night cruise (£10) for an unforgettable finale!
  • What to do in Chongqing for 2-3 days?

Add Ciqikou Ancient Town, the Zoo (£2.50 to see 20 pandas), and Nanshan for sunset views. On a 3-day trip, include the free Three Gorges Museum and Happy Valley theme park.
  • Is the hotpot really that spicy?

Yes, it's China's spiciest! Order a "Yuanyang" pot (half-mild). Keep a local beer handy — water won't help with the chilli heat!
  • What's the budget for a trip to Chongqing?

Budget travel: £35-£50/day. Mid-range: £70-£100/day (3★ hotel, hotpot, attractions). For more comfort: £130+/day. Very affordable compared to Beijing or Shanghai!
  • How to get around?

The metro (12 lines, £0.25-£0.85) covers all key sites. Taxis are very cheap (£8 from airport to centre). Use tourist buses (T002, T003) or the Didi app.
