🏘️Must-Visit Districts in Guangzhou

Once you arrive, you'll soon discover that Guangzhou is one of China's largest cities! It spans an area of approximately 7,434.4 km²! But don't worry, you'll find most of the must-see attractions concentrated in just a few districts. Here are our top picks for districts you absolutely can't miss!

Haizhu: Riverside Views and Local Guangzhou Life

Haizhu Tram Line 1

Exhibition Hall of China Import and Export Fair

Haizhu, a district that blends peaceful riverside living with some of Guangzhou’s most iconic sights. This is where laid-back neighbourhoods meet major landmarks, giving you a perfect mix of nature, culture and modern city life.

Start with the unmissable Canton Tower, rising beside the Pearl River and offering some of the best views in the city. Close by in Pazhou, you’ll find the Canton Fair Complex, a major draw for international visitors. For a scenic and relaxing journey, hop on the Haizhu Tram, which glides through leafy areas and modern riverside developments.

If you want to enjoy Guangzhou’s nightlife, head to Party Pier for open-air bars, great food and beautiful views across the water. For shopping and local vibes, Jiangnanxi is a lively commercial street filled with cafés, boutiques and plenty of tempting eats. Nature lovers will also enjoy a peaceful stroll at the Haizhu National Wetland Park, one of the city’s best green escapes.

📌 Getting there: Take the Guangzhou Metro to Canton Tower Station (Line 3) or Pazhou Station (Line 8) for easy access to the best spots.

Tianhe: Diving into Futuristic Guangzhou

Tianhe Guangzhou

Tianhe Guangzhou

Prepare for a radical shift in atmosphere as we make our way to the Tianhe district! Tianhe is Guangzhou straight out of a sci-fi movie: towering glass skyscrapers that brush the clouds, colossal shopping centres (the Taikoo Hui, for example, sprawls across 8 floors of pure luxury!), and an ultra-modern business hub. This is 21st-century China, wide awake and buzzing with an energy that never sleeps.

But the real spectacle truly begins once night falls. Make your way to Zhujiang New Town, where the towering skyscrapers illuminate the night sky along the river. You can also soak in breathtaking panoramic views with a drink in hand at one of the district's many vibrant bars (with a special shout-out to the incredible rooftop spots at Canton Tower and IFC Mall!).

📌 Getting there: The Zhujiang New Town metro station (Lines 3 and 5) offers direct access right into the heart of this dazzling, illuminated district.

Liwan: Uncover the vibrant traditions and local culture of Guangzhou

Liwan

Liwan offers a captivating glimpse into Guangzhou before its economic boom. Picture narrow, cobbled alleyways, charming low-slung red-brick houses, and bustling traditional markets where stalls overflow with unfamiliar vegetables and live fish swim in their tanks.

Shangxiajiu Street is bustling with people from morning till night, especially at weekends. What's more, you'll find historic tea houses like Lian Xiang Lou tucked away here; just imagine: they've been serving dim sum since 1889 in a wonderfully preserved historic setting!

The Chen Temple (or Chen Clan Ancestral Hall), an architectural masterpiece in the neighbourhood, is absolutely worth a detour for its exquisite wood carvings that beautifully showcase the legendary craftsmanship of Cantonese artisans.

📌 Pro tip and a fantastic find: The morning dim sum at Lian Xiang Lou or Taotaoju is an absolute must-try experience (arrive before 9 am to avoid the queues!).

Yuexiu: the perfect blend of nature and city life

Yuexiu Park

Guangzhou Museum

Next up on your must-see list: Yuexiu! What makes it so special? This neighbourhood offers a perfect blend of nature and city life. For starters, Yuexiu Park, with its 86 hectares of lush greenery, provides a welcome breath of fresh air right in the heart of the bustling metropolis. The famous Five-Ram Sculpture (a symbol of the city since 1959) proudly takes centre stage, and you'll often find locals practising their morning tai chi here in a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere.

Then, there's Beijing Road, a bustling shopping district stretching for several kilometres. But here's a fascinating detail: beneath the transparent glass panels set into the pavement, you can glimpse the remnants of the ancient road, dating back through multiple dynasties! You're literally treading on 2,000 years of history as you shop!

The Museum of the Nanyue King Mausoleum is absolutely worth a stop (especially on a rainy day!). This exceptional archaeological site tells the fascinating story of the Nanyue kingdom, which vanished over 2000 years ago. The funerary objects on display (jade, gold, bronze) boast exquisite craftsmanship and speak volumes about a sophisticated civilisation.

📌 Trip.com's top tip: visit the museum in the morning, then grab lunch at one of Beijing Road's canteens (you absolutely *must* try the shaomai and cheung fun!).

Shamian Island: A Colonial Time-Travel Adventure

Shamian Island

It's barely 900 metres long, but oh, what an atmosphere awaits! This tiny island, nestled on the Pearl River, instantly whisks you away to 19th-century Europe. When China opened its concessions, both the French and British settled here, leaving behind a truly remarkable architectural legacy: think elegant neoclassical facades, a stunning Gothic Church of Our Lady of Lourdes (built in 1892), and former consulates now transformed into chic cafés… You'll almost feel like you've stepped right into Europe!

Today, Shamian has transformed into a true open-air museum, boasting over 150 preserved historic buildings. Once you're there, what can you expect? Indulge in delightful strolls beneath the century-old banyan trees, then immerse yourself in a contemporary art gallery housed within a former colonial bank, before settling down for a coffee on a charming terrace with stunning river views.

The atmosphere remains wonderfully peaceful, even in the middle of the week – what a delightful contrast to the bustling city centre just a stone's throw away!

Every time I come to Guangzhou, I always stay at the Jianguo Hotel. Booking a room is easy, and the service is excellent. The housekeeping staff always greets guests, which is a nice touch. The rooms are a bit old, but the facilities inside are practical. My top three favorite things about the Jianguo Hotel are: first, the breakfast is delicious; second, the room gets completely dark after turning off the lights, unlike some hotels where LED strips or power buttons stay lit and disturb your sleep; and third, the bed is big enough for me to roll around freely and sleep very comfortably!

The hotel experience was great! It's conveniently located very close to the subway station. The staff were warm and professional. Although the decor feels a bit dated, it didn't detract from the comfort of the room at all; I had a wonderful night's sleep. Special thanks to Manager Michael for the room upgrade and attentive service. I look forward to staying again!

Absolutely amazing stay at Fraser Suites. This was one of our highlights in GZ. The location is fantastic and connected to the One link Walk. Walking distance to all the major malls and Grandview Mall too. The superstars are definitely the staff. Housekeeping and concierge are impeccable, everyone is attentive and polite and ready to help. This trip, my family fell ill and the staff was ready to help us, assisting my husband to the hospital and getting everything sorted out so that it'd be stress free. We were blown away by their service. This is the best hotel we have stayed at to date anywhere and we will definitely be looking out for Fraser Suites on our future travels. Thank you!

This was a very pleasant stay. The room was well-designed, spacious, bright, comfortable, and clean. All the staff were warm and friendly. The front desk even gave us two cute hotel teddy bears when they saw we had children, which excited them very much. The bellhop also helped deliver our luggage to the room. The hotel's location is excellent, connected to Teemall, and Teemall is right on Metro Line 3, just two stops from Canton Tower. Across the street is Parc Central, and through Parc Central is Grandview Mall. There are many shopping malls around, making dining, staying, shopping, and entertainment very convenient. Our whole family was very satisfied, and we will definitely choose to stay at Sheraton Hotel again when we visit Guangzhou. 👍

I stayed for two weeks, and they upgraded our room for the first week, which was great. It's an old-established hotel with an unbeatable location, surrounded by countless dining options, and very convenient for taxis and the subway. The only downside is that the bathroom doesn't have a door, and showering in the bathtub is inconvenient. (I suggest replacing the bathtub with a proper shower for a better experience.)

A Luxurious Retreat with Standout Amenities My stay at the Sofitel Guangzhou Sunrich was excellent. The hotel truly excels in two key areas: first-class amenities and exceptional service. The pool and spa area is a genuine oasis—beautifully designed and perfectly equipped for relaxation. Equally impressive was the staff, who were consistently helpful, professional, and attentive throughout my visit. For complete transparency, my experience had two minor drawbacks. My room, while comfortable and well-appointed, showed slight signs of wear and would benefit from some maintenance updates. The dining experience was also inconsistent; some dishes were memorable, while others were merely average. That said, these points did little to diminish an otherwise wonderful stay. The overall comfort, serene ambiance, and superb service make the Sofitel Sunrich a hotel I would happily return to and recommend without hesitation.

Chance upon this place browsing through Trip.com and noticed the good reviews. No regrets as it’s a gem of a place - fantastically central location at Tianhe District with 2 subway lines, plentiful good food & wide ranging amenities etc. I chose the room with a balcony with a washing machine and it is very helpful to be able to do washing as needed. Room facilities are almost complete except for an iron. The cleaning lady is so polite, proactive and helpful and speaks volumes of their service level. Highly recommended value for money place to stay at a very convenient location!

The room design is modern and stylish, with spacious and bright interiors. The bedding is soft and comfortable, ensuring a good night's sleep. The hygiene is excellent, the bathroom is clean and tidy, and there's plenty of stable hot water. The soundproofing is very effective; it's quiet even though it faces the street. We drove from Beijing to Hainan and stayed at the W Hotel Xi'an when passing through. Our mood went through a rollercoaster of emotions. Upon check-in, the hotel's 'nightclub' vibe immediately dampened our spirits. However, once we entered our room, the expansive lake view and excellent scenery instantly lifted our mood. All in all, it left a deep impression. Coincidentally, I got a spot in the Guangzhou Marathon, and with so many good hotels in Guangzhou, I specifically booked the W Hotel Guangzhou to check it out. And it certainly didn't disappoint! First, the location is excellent, close to cultural landmarks like the Guangdong Provincial Museum, Guangzhou Library, and Huacheng Square. It's also quite close to both the start/finish line and the bib collection point for the marathon. Secondly, the hotel's design is full of futuristic technology and visual impact. Of course, the lobby still has that 'nightclub' atmosphere, with lighting, music, and decor creating a vibrant, youthful ambiance. The rooms are equipped with modern facilities, and the bedding is luxurious. Furthermore, the dining was also exceptional. We had the buffet dinner on the night we checked in, and the variety was extensive, and the quality was superb. Finally, the service was impeccable. Clinton at the front desk had a smiling demeanor, was highly efficient, and made the check-in process quick. He also helped us with a room upgrade, packed breakfast for us to take to the marathon, and even extended our check-out time because we were late returning from the race. He was truly a thoughtful and heartwarming staff member. In summary, this stay was perfect, leaving us with a unique and unforgettable experience. We will definitely stay again. Thanks again to Clinton at the front desk, you worked hard!

Extremely disappointing experience, especially given its supposed 'platinum five-star' status. Honestly, the facilities and service are worse than a standard four-star chain hotel. The massive lobby has no waiting area. You have to queue for check-in and check-out, and with kids, there's nowhere to sit and rest. Forget about the welcome drinks that other five-star hotels usually offer. The staff were all enthusiastic, but seemed very new. They weren't familiar with the hotel's basic facilities. The elevator attendant didn't even know where the garden entrance was, claiming it was their first day. The privacy design is terrible. The shower area is completely open, meaning anyone in the bedroom can see someone naked right after showering. Even for family stays, this design is incredibly uncomfortable. I've never stayed in such a strange hotel, let alone a five-star one. Is it a couple's/boutique hotel? We switched to an executive suite on the second day, which had a sliding door for the bathroom – but it was transparent! The hairdryer was an old Philips model, very damaging to hair. Many five-star hotels use Dyson now. There were no multi-charging cables, let alone welcome fruit or daily sweet soup, which are standard at five-star establishments. On the contrary, all drinks and snacks in the mini-bar were chargeable and expensive; only basic water, tea bags, and coffee were free. Seriously, it's worse than a four-star chain, incredibly stingy. We checked in with a child, and the front desk said they'd provide kids' toiletries and slippers, but we never received them even after two days until check-out. Basically, every issue required constant follow-up to get resolved. Internal management and communication efficiency were extremely low. I'm not sure if it's all new staff, but training seems inadequate and responsibilities unclear. Overall, a very, very poor experience. There's only an outdoor pool, and it's not heated. My child loves swimming but couldn't enjoy it. Compared to these basic facilities, making the garden and fountain so grand to justify the price means absolutely nothing to guests. I reported these issues to the customer service manager, hoping for improvements. They offered me a free breakfast if I stayed again… Am I supposed to pay a high price for such a room just for a free breakfast? A complimentary afternoon tea on the spot would have been a more sincere gesture.

The hotel's location is absolutely unbeatable! Right downstairs, you'll find Huacheng Square and the subway station. The bedding in the room was comfortable, and the bathroom's wet/dry separation was excellent. Breakfast offered a great variety, including freshly made Cantonese wonton noodles and local dim sum, which was a pleasant surprise. The front desk service was also very attentive. This place offers fantastic value for money in the Zhujiang New Town area! Whether you're here for a business trip or a leisurely shopping spree, you can't go wrong with this hotel. I'll definitely choose this place again on my next visit to Guangzhou.

This was my fourth stay at the Grand Hyatt Guangzhou, so I'm very familiar with the hotel. Its location is convenient, right in the heart of Zhujiang New Town. Some rooms offer views of the Canton Tower, while most overlook the green axis of Huacheng Avenue. For first-time visitors to Zhujiang New Town, the view from the window is quite novel, but for repeat guests, it might feel a bit restricted. The rooms are on the smaller side for a hotel of this caliber, especially the twin rooms, which are narrower compared to most Hyatt properties in other cities. The bathtub has always been a small, square design; it's somewhat creative, but actually moving around in it for a soak is difficult. However, the hotel's public areas are well-designed. The swimming pool is on the top floor and includes hot spring pools, which are much more comfortable and spacious than the in-room bathtubs. Breakfast is a definite highlight; I have a great impression of their fish porridge, wonton noodles, and dim sum. It's clear they put more effort into their breakfast than most other hotels.

I booked the wrong hotel by mistake, but the location is just as convenient. It's an older five-star hotel, and the service is still up to par. They even thoughtfully gave us mooncakes since we checked in just before the Mid-Autumn Festival. The pool is very comfortable. However, the room decor really needs an upgrade; I'm looking forward to seeing a much-improved environment next time I stay. The dim sum at the 7th-floor restaurant is excellent.

An old-money style hotel, but the room had a bit of an odor from not being aired out for a while. After a call, they opened a small window which helped a lot! The hotel service was excellent, and the breakfast on the first floor was very distinctive and delicious. We enjoyed two out of the five meals offered at the executive lounge; while the variety was limited, the attention to detail, flavor, and service were all top-notch! The view of Canton Tower from the window was also quite nice.

Came to Guangzhou with my family. Emily handled our check-in and even upgraded our room, which was super convenient. The room was spacious, and the bathroom had a separate shower with a sliding door for privacy. The bed was very comfortable. For food delivery, there's a delivery locker; you can get to it by walking through the snack street to the commercial building on the first floor. Evaluating your hotel stay is essential to sharing your experience with others or planning future trips. Here are some descriptive evaluations based on common factors: The hotel was ideally situated close to major tourist attractions, making it easy to explore the city. However, accessing public transport could have been simpler. The check-in process was a breeze, with friendly staff who greeted us warmly. We felt welcomed right from the start. Upon entering our room, we were pleasantly surprised by its cleanliness and the overall ambiance. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and the decor gave a cozy feel. However, the Wi-Fi connection was a bit unreliable, which was inconvenient for our planning. The common areas were well-maintained and inviting. We enjoyed the on-site restaurant, which offered a diverse menu. The breakfast buffet was especially noteworthy, with fresh options every morning. My stay at Four Seasons Hotel Guangzhou was truly memorable, even though it was just for one night. What stood out most was how attentive and thoughtful the team was. Before arrival, I mentioned that I hoped for a Canton Tower view, fully understanding that the room category did not guarantee it. To my surprise, they genuinely listened and managed to arrange a room with that view for us, which already set the tone for the stay. I also noted that we were celebrating our anniversary, and despite the short stay, the hotel went the extra mile with lovely in-room decorations, along with complimentary red wine and chocolates. These small but meaningful touches made the celebration feel very special. From the moment we stepped out of the car, the welcome was warm and sincere, and that level of hospitality was consistent throughout our stay. They even went above and beyond for my child's birthday, with the guest relations team being so thoughtful ❤️ They even gave my child a present 🎁 So incredibly considerate! Highly recommend! 👍🏻

🥢 Guangzhou, Home of Authentic Cantonese Flavours

Cantonese morning tea (Yum Cha)

Cantonese Dim Sum in Guangzhou

Guangzhou truly lives up to its reputation as China's gastronomic paradise. Why, you ask? This vibrant city is the authentic birthplace of Cantonese cuisine, one of the four great Chinese culinary traditions.

The local saying '食在广州' (eat in Guangzhou) beautifully encapsulates just how central food is to the local way of life.

The Yum Cha and dim sum ritual

Yum Cha (literally 'drinking tea') is a cherished social institution in Guangzhou. This delightful tradition is best experienced in the morning or early afternoon, when tea houses truly come alive and families gather to share moments.

The idea is simple: you order some tea (often pu-erh, jasmine, or chrysanthemum), and then a delightful parade of dim sum arrives, served in traditional bamboo steamers. Har gow (those delightful translucent prawn dumplings), siu mai (open-topped pork and prawn parcels), char siu bao (fluffy, steamed buns filled with succulent barbecued pork), and cheong fun (silky rice noodle rolls) are just some of the beloved classics you'll find.

Historic establishments like Lian Xiang Lou (open since 1889) or Taotao Ju lovingly keep this tradition alive, all within an authentic setting.

📌 Top Tip: arrive early (before 9 am) to beat the crowds and get your pick of the menu. On weekends, some tea houses are completely full as early as 8:30 am!

💼The Must-Visit Event: The Canton Fair

Whether you're a seasoned pro in international trade or just a curious soul eager to witness one of the world's most colossal trade fairs, then you absolutely must know about the Canton Fair (China Import and Export Fair), which graces Guangzhou twice a year! This colossal event has been a global magnet since 1957, drawing in tens of thousands of exhibitors and buyers from every corner of the globe. It all unfolds at the magnificent Pazhou Complex, Asia's largest exhibition centre, boasting an incredible 1.18 million square metres of space! Prepare to be amazed!

The fair unfolds in three exciting phases, spanning a period of around three weeks:

  • Phase 1 is all about electronics, machinery, and industrial products.
  • Phase 2 is all about consumer goods, home decor, and furniture.
  • Phase 3 is all about textiles, fashion, and delicious food!

🔥 When the Canton Fair is on, hotels get snapped up in a flash and prices can really soar! If you're hoping to join the excitement, be sure to book your hotels well in advance!
