🏘️Must-Visit Districts in Guangzhou

You'll soon discover once you arrive, Guangzhou is one of China's largest cities! It spans an area of approximately 7,434.4 km²! But don't worry, you'll find most of the must-see attractions concentrated in just a few districts. Here are our top picks for districts you absolutely can't miss!

Haizhu: Riverside Views and Local Guangzhou Life

Haizhu Tram Line 1

Exhibition Hall of China Import and Export Fair

Haizhu, a district that blends peaceful riverside living with some of Guangzhou’s most iconic sights. This is where laid-back neighbourhoods meet major landmarks, giving you a perfect mix of nature, culture and modern city life.

Start with the unmissable Canton Tower, rising beside the Pearl River and offering some of the best views in the city. Close by in Pazhou, you’ll find the Canton Fair Complex, a major draw for international visitors. For a scenic and relaxing journey, hop on the Haizhu Tram, which glides through leafy areas and modern riverside developments.

If you want to enjoy Guangzhou’s nightlife, head to Party Pier for open-air bars, great food and beautiful views across the water. For shopping and local vibes, Jiangnanxi is a lively commercial street filled with cafés, boutiques and plenty of tempting eats. Nature lovers will also enjoy a peaceful stroll at the Haizhu National Wetland Park, one of the city’s best green escapes.

📌 Getting there: Take the Guangzhou Metro to Canton Tower Station (Line 3) or Pazhou Station (Line 8) for easy access to the best spots.

Tianhe: Diving into Futuristic Guangzhou

Tianhe Guangzhou

Tianhe Guangzhou

Prepare for a radical shift in atmosphere as we make our way to the Tianhe district! Tianhe is Guangzhou straight out of a sci-fi movie: towering glass skyscrapers that brush the clouds, colossal shopping centres (the Taikoo Hui, for example, sprawls across 8 floors of pure luxury!), and an ultra-modern business hub. This is 21st-century China, wide awake and buzzing with an energy that never sleeps.

But the real spectacle truly begins once night falls. Make your way to Zhujiang New Town, where the towering skyscrapers illuminate the night sky along the river. You can also soak in breathtaking panoramic views with a drink in hand at one of the district's many vibrant bars (with a special shout-out to the incredible rooftop spots at Canton Tower and IFC Mall!).

📌 Getting there: The Zhujiang New Town metro station (Lines 3 and 5) offers direct access right into the heart of this dazzling, illuminated district.

Liwan: Uncover the vibrant traditions and local culture of Guangzhou

Liwan

Liwan offers a captivating glimpse into Guangzhou before its economic boom. Picture narrow, cobbled alleyways, charming low-slung red-brick houses, and bustling traditional markets where stalls overflow with unfamiliar vegetables and live fish swim in their tanks.

Shangxiajiu Street is bustling with people from morning till night, especially at weekends. What's more, you'll find historic tea houses like Lian Xiang Lou tucked away here; just imagine: they've been serving dim sum since 1889 in a wonderfully preserved historic setting!

The Chen Temple (or Chen Clan Ancestral Hall), an architectural masterpiece in the neighbourhood, is absolutely worth a detour for its exquisite wood carvings that beautifully showcase the legendary craftsmanship of Cantonese artisans.

📌 Pro tip and a fantastic find: The morning dim sum at Lian Xiang Lou or Taotaoju is an absolute must-try experience (arrive before 9 am to avoid the queues!).

Yuexiu: the perfect blend of nature and city life

Yuexiu Park

Guangzhou Museum

Next up on your must-see list: Yuexiu! What makes it so special? This neighbourhood offers a perfect blend of nature and city life. For starters, Yuexiu Park, with its 86 hectares of lush greenery, provides a welcome breath of fresh air right in the heart of the bustling metropolis. The famous Five-Ram Sculpture (a symbol of the city since 1959) proudly takes centre stage, and you'll often find locals practising their morning tai chi here in a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere.

Then, there's Beijing Road, a bustling shopping district stretching for several kilometres. But here's a fascinating detail: beneath the transparent glass panels set into the pavement, you can glimpse the remnants of the ancient road, dating back through multiple dynasties! You're literally treading on 2,000 years of history as you shop!

The Museum of the Nanyue King Mausoleum is absolutely worth a stop (especially on a rainy day!). This exceptional archaeological site tells the fascinating story of the Nanyue kingdom, which vanished over 2000 years ago. The funerary objects on display (jade, gold, bronze) boast exquisite craftsmanship and speak volumes about a sophisticated civilisation.

📌 Trip.com's top tip: visit the museum in the morning, then grab lunch at one of Beijing Road's canteens (you absolutely *must* try the shaomai and cheung fun!).

Shamian Island: A Colonial Time-Travel Adventure

Shamian Island

It's barely 900 metres long, but oh, what an atmosphere awaits! This tiny island, nestled on the Pearl River, instantly whisks you away to 19th-century Europe. When China opened its concessions, both the French and British settled here, leaving behind a truly remarkable architectural legacy: think elegant neoclassical facades, a stunning Gothic Church of Our Lady of Lourdes (built in 1892), and former consulates now transformed into chic cafés… You'll almost feel like you've stepped right into Europe!

Today, Shamian has transformed into a true open-air museum, boasting over 150 preserved historic buildings. Once you're there, what wonders await? Indulge in delightful strolls beneath the century-old banyan trees, then immerse yourself in a contemporary art gallery housed within a former colonial bank, before settling down for a coffee on a charming terrace with stunning river views.

The atmosphere remains wonderfully peaceful, even in the middle of the week – what a delightful contrast to the bustling city centre just a stone's throw away!

I've stayed at the Jianguo Hotel multiple times. Its location near Guangzhou East Railway Station, with access to Metro Lines 1 and 3, gives it a huge advantage in terms of transportation. Although it's an older five-star hotel, they really make an effort to maintain it. The morning tea on the fourth floor is a highlight; it's not pre-made food and always tastes incredibly fresh, which is why I always choose to dine there. The concierge, front desk, and housekeeping staff are all very polite and always eager to help. There's even a small flower shop in the lobby, perfect for picking up a little gift when meeting old friends.

I recently stayed at the hotel and overall, I was very satisfied with the service. The environment was pleasant and comfortable, creating a welcoming atmosphere. The staff were friendly and professional, making the experience even more enjoyable. The room was spacious enough, providing a great sense of comfort and relaxation. Special mention goes to the staff at the entrance—they were exceptionally attentive and helpful when we were getting in and out of the car, ensuring everything went smoothly. I’d definitely recommend this hotel for a pleasant stay!

Had a really good stay here. Walkable from Guangzhou East train station, where you can take the High Speed Rail to many cities like Hong Kong and Chaozhou, where I took day trips out to. Breakfast was abundant with east and west varieties. Totally delish, as dim sum options change everyday. Had the opportunity to try out the massage - had deep tissue body and facial. Bliss. Be sure to ask for Lisa. Great location. Easily accessible to CBD via taxi or Metro. Will certainly stay again! P.S. here’s a photo of the boy that cleans and delivers food as a room service helper

We stayed for 2 nights as a family with two young children. The hotel was super convenient because it has a direct access from the lobby to the mall without going outside. The mall has wonderful selections on food and we got to try different food during our stay. We had a great view from the hotel room. Check in was quick. Staff was okay not perfect, I am sure they can do better. Generally speaking the experience was great and we'll probably stay here again when we visit GuangZhou in the future, due to its convenience of the location.

Guangzhou Baiyun Hotel has always been my top choice for accommodation, consistently leaving a good impression in all aspects. However, I have to air some grievances this time. Firstly, the hotel is replacing its elevators. Previously, there were three elevators serving the 25th floor where I stayed, but now there's only one, which is extremely inconvenient. The front desk staff mentioned that elevator #9 also goes to the 25th floor, but it's not a guest elevator and is very slow. Secondly, the in-room facilities are quite old and seem to have been poorly maintained. The electric kettle lid doesn't seal properly, leaving a gap. In the bathroom, it's very difficult to switch between the overhead shower and the lower faucet. Once I finally got the overhead shower to work, there was no hot water, so I ended up having to wash up in the sink. All these issues were frustrating and helpless.

For a weekend stress-buster, nothing beats a stay at the Sofitel Guangzhou in Tianhe District! Choosing a hotel with an executive lounge, a pool, and great views, without a packed itinerary, is so therapeutic. ❤️ It was a really nice experience with my family. The mural in the lobby is perfect for photos. The lobby service was also excellent; Mia from guest relations warmly welcomed us and even suggested we buy mooncakes. I got a box of 'Jin Yue' which was great and reasonably priced. The hotel staff were very thoughtful. Since we arrived too early and our room wasn't ready, Mia kindly brought us bottled water while we waited in the lobby and patiently answered all our questions! Really good. This time, I booked a room at the Sofitel Guangzhou. After packing light luggage, we headed out around noon. Staying in a different commercial area within the same city, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Canton Tower and the bustling city below, felt both convenient and refreshing. Instant relaxation!

I had to extend my stay for work. Overall, the location is convenient with plenty of amenities nearby. However, the procurement department really needs to step up their game. Due to a dental procedure, I couldn't use a regular toothbrush, but they only provided kids' toothbrushes 4 times during my 11-day stay. When I inquired, they just said they hadn't restocked. It's quite disappointing when they advertise providing children's toothbrushes, but then they're out of stock and can't provide them daily.

On the day we checked into the W Hotel, it was the day before the National Games started, so Guangzhou was packed, and the W was fully booked. At 3 PM, some rooms weren't even ready! Since I booked an executive room, I still had to wait, but the front desk was incredibly helpful! A big shoutout to Eleven, Duke, and Rebecca! They let us leave our luggage at the front desk and go relax on the executive floor. The last three photos show the view from the 26th-floor executive lounge! We had some drinks, chatted, and our room was ready half an hour later! Our luggage was delivered right to our room! We had a wonderful stay in Guangzhou! The cocktails at the W Hotel are beautiful! Great value for money! They also have a live band! The pool view is fantastic! And I even took a photo with Miss Eleven at the end! She's really nice and very enthusiastic about helping you solve problems! The 'superior room' mentioned is actually the executive room, 50 square meters, very comfortable!

I'd like to start by thanking Rain, one of the staff members. Even though it was a busy weekend with many guests checking in, she really prioritized my experience. This hotel is an excellent choice for a red-eye flight. It's conveniently located right at the subway exit for Terminal 1, making the subway the most straightforward way to get here. Every time I've stayed, I've booked a single room. While it's not large, it's perfectly adequate, featuring a single bed and a narrow desk. After checking in, you can just freshen up and go to sleep, getting a good night's rest for the next day's journey. The soundproofing seems to be decent, or perhaps it's because all the neighboring rooms are singles, so there's less chatter and noise. The staff's attitude was also good. To be honest, I've traveled a lot and stayed in many hotels, including several times in Guangzhou and at various hotels there. This time, I originally planned to book a hotel near Xiguan Grand House. However, I unexpectedly stumbled upon a video of the Dongfang Hotel – China's first-ever star-rated hotel and the venue for the first Canton Fair. Considering I'd never experienced a hotel with that 90s Guangzhou vibe from TV, I decided to book the Dongfang Hotel. My overall experience this time was excellent, and my family was extremely satisfied. First, the hotel has an impressive presence. It boasts the grandeur, history, and luxury of a five-star hotel, coupled with modern, high-quality service, facilities, and rooms. The lobby staff were incredibly warm and meticulous in their service. Seeing I had a child, they clearly explained all the hotel activities, such as the pool and Mid-Autumn parent-child events. I could really feel the front desk staff's patience, attention to detail, professionalism, and enthusiasm. Before booking, I requested a late check-out on Ctrip, and the hotel proactively offered it during check-in, which made me feel valued. All the staff I encountered at the hotel were very courteous, and the cleaning staff on my floor were also excellent. A big thumbs up to the hotel staff! 👍🏻 Second, the transportation is very convenient. Within a 5-minute walk, there are Metro Line 11 and Line 2, making it super easy to get anywhere. There's also a bus stop right outside the hotel, and taxis are readily available. Transportation is exceptionally convenient. Across from the hotel is the large shopping mall, Liuhua Center, making dining and shopping easy. Popular restaurants like Dian De and Nanhai Fishing Village are right next to the hotel, and the Southern Theater Command General Hospital is nearby – truly a versatile location. Third, the room facilities are modern, the bedding is comfortable, the soundproofing is excellent, and the room is tidy and clean. The room also feels very spacious, and the conditions are top-notch. Overall, this stay exceeded my expectations, and my entire family was very pleased. I will definitely stay here again on future trips to Guangzhou. I'm also leaving this review on Ctrip to give an honest opinion to everyone. It's truly an excellent hotel worth recommending.

The lobby and physical rooms are notably much older than what the photos suggest, creating a significant gap between expectation and reality. The hotel features different wings, ranging from new to quite old, and during my conversations, I noticed that this concern wasn't adequately addressed by the front desk staff. If you're seeking a more modern interior, I highly recommend requesting a room in the new wing to ensure a more pleasant stay. However, what truly stood out during my visit was the exceptional service provided by the manager, Leon. His attentiveness and dedication to addressing our concerns transformed our experience, turning an initial disappointment into a truly positive one. Leon's genuine commitment to guest satisfaction is commendable and makes a remarkable difference in the overall impression of this hotel. His outstanding hospitality not only resolved our issues but also left us with fond memories of our stay, and for that, I am truly grateful.

The Four Seasons Hotel Guangzhou offers a truly unique experience, one I've never encountered at any other hotel – the experience of being treated like a thief! Around 2:30 PM on December 5th, I arrived at the hotel lobby. The front desk staff told me my room wasn't ready and asked me to wait. I mentioned my phone was out of battery and I was about to go out with friends. So, front desk staff A offered to charge my phone at the front desk. I left my phone there and went to the restroom. When I returned, my phone was plugged in, and I had to stand in the position shown in picture 1. Fearing I might bother other guests, I only stood there for a short while before moving away to wander around the lobby. When it was time for me to leave, I returned to the front desk. At this point, another guest was standing directly in front of the desk, so I had to stand to the side to call a taxi on my phone (position in picture 2). That's when employee B, who was standing in the lobby, came over and asked if I needed help. Before I could even answer, he accused me of standing there to peek at other guests' privacy. Wow, wow, even if I tried to pick a fight, I couldn't come up with such an insulting method! It was truly novel, and I, the blogger, was momentarily speechless. All I could say was that I didn't want to stand there either; if my room were ready, I wouldn't need to stand there charging my phone. The employee then retreated without a word, no apology, not even a simple ”okay.” I had to ask other staff what position they had assigned this person to. I don't recall any hotel having a position dedicated to supervising guests to see if they're peeking at computers. Even if I weren't a hotel guest, just standing there to use a power strip, is such behavior serious enough to warrant an accusation of peeking at others' privacy? Do I need to explain again that from my angle, I couldn't even see the computer screen? And going back to the beginning, it wasn't my idea to plug my phone in at the front desk, was it? I've already written their excuses for them here: ”It was busy that day, the room wasn't ready, the employee was just doing their job, we apologize for the bad experience~” I only have one question: which of these reasons leads to accusing a guest of peeking at customer privacy on a work computer?? Under normal circumstances, a guest really shouldn't stand in that spot, but first and foremost, the hotel employee told me to charge my phone there, which is why I was standing there. Secondly, if that person had just come over and said I was blocking the way, I wouldn't have been so angry. Why jump straight to such a bizarre accusation? Forget about respecting hotel guests, did they even show me the respect a normal citizen deserves? All I can say is run! With this money, where else wouldn't be better? At this price point, are there really any hotels with significantly worse facilities? I didn't feel a shred of welcome; I only felt like my booking displeased them, infringing on other guests' privacy or adding to their burden. For those who enjoy causing themselves trouble, I highly recommend this hotel! 👍🏻

However, some of the sidewalks on the island are paved with uneven bricks, which can be challenging if you have luggage. Because the hotel also houses many restaurants open to the public and has a waterfall and landscape feature, the first and second floors were very crowded and noisy, with a lot of people traffic and a somewhat chaotic atmosphere. The guest floors, however, were relatively quiet. The room faced an art center across the river. There seemed to be performances at night, which generated a lot of noise and flashing spotlights, significantly disturbing my rest. **Facilities:** The room was well-equipped with a sofa, writing instruments, a desk lamp, and a bathtub. The toilet had a retrofitted smart bidet seat. The overall room layout was sensible, with excellent natural light and an open feel. **Hygiene:** The cleaning was very thorough. The room was cleaned twice a day, and toiletries were promptly replaced, which I was very satisfied with. **Service:** From check-in to check-out, all the staff I encountered were very friendly and proactively greeted me. However, on the first day, the TV connection wasn't working, and after calling for service, there was no response for over an hour. This doesn't quite align with a five-star hotel standard, although the staff who eventually came to fix it were very pleasant. They also delivered two cookies daily as a turndown treat. Overall, the hotel is quite good. Aside from needing more attention to service and soundproofing, there weren't many major issues. I would definitely choose to stay at White Swan Hotel again on my next visit to Guangzhou.

🥢 Guangzhou, Home of Authentic Cantonese Flavours

Cantonese morning tea (Yum Cha)

Cantonese Dim Sum in Guangzhou

Guangzhou truly lives up to its reputation as China's gastronomic paradise. Why, you ask? This vibrant city is the authentic birthplace of Cantonese cuisine, one of the four great Chinese culinary traditions.

The local saying '食在广州' (eat in Guangzhou) beautifully encapsulates just how central food is to the local way of life.

The Yum Cha and dim sum ritual

Yum Cha (literally 'drinking tea') is a cherished social institution in Guangzhou. This delightful tradition is best experienced in the morning or early afternoon, when tea houses truly come alive and families gather to share moments.

The idea is simple: you order some tea (often pu-erh, jasmine, or chrysanthemum), and then a delightful parade of dim sum arrives, served in traditional bamboo steamers. Har gow (those delightful translucent prawn dumplings), siu mai (open-topped pork and prawn parcels), char siu bao (fluffy, steamed buns filled with succulent barbecued pork), and cheong fun (silky rice noodle rolls) are just some of the beloved classics you'll find.

Historic establishments like Lian Xiang Lou (open since 1889) or Taotao Ju lovingly keep this tradition alive, all within an authentic setting.

📌 Top Tip: arrive early (before 9 am) to beat the crowds and get your pick of the menu. On weekends, some tea houses are completely full as early as 8:30 am!

💼The Must-Visit Event: The Canton Fair

Whether you're a seasoned pro in international trade or just a curious soul eager to witness one of the world's most colossal trade fairs, then you absolutely must know about the Canton Fair (China Import and Export Fair), which graces Guangzhou twice a year! This colossal event has been a global magnet since 1957, drawing in tens of thousands of exhibitors and buyers from every corner of the globe. It all unfolds at the magnificent Pazhou Complex, Asia's largest exhibition centre, boasting an incredible 1.18 million square metres of space! Prepare to be amazed!

The fair unfolds in three exciting phases, spanning a period of around three weeks:

  • Phase 1 is all about electronics, machinery, and industrial products.
  • Phase 2 is all about consumer goods, home decor, and furniture.
  • Phase 3 is all about textiles, fashion, and delicious food!

🔥 When the Canton Fair is on, hotels get snapped up in a flash and prices can really soar! If you're hoping to join the excitement, be sure to book your hotels well in advance!
