🏘️Must-Visit Districts in Guangzhou
Once you arrive, you'll soon discover that Guangzhou is one of China's largest cities! It spans an area of approximately 7,434.4 km²! But don't worry, you'll find most of the must-see attractions concentrated in just a few districts. Here are our top picks for districts you absolutely can't miss!
Haizhu: Riverside Views and Local Guangzhou Life

Haizhu, a district that blends peaceful riverside living with some of Guangzhou’s most iconic sights. This is where laid-back neighbourhoods meet major landmarks, giving you a perfect mix of nature, culture and modern city life.
Start with the unmissable Canton Tower, rising beside the Pearl River and offering some of the best views in the city. Close by in Pazhou, you’ll find the Canton Fair Complex, a major draw for international visitors. For a scenic and relaxing journey, hop on the Haizhu Tram, which glides through leafy areas and modern riverside developments.
If you want to enjoy Guangzhou’s nightlife, head to Party Pier for open-air bars, great food and beautiful views across the water. For shopping and local vibes, Jiangnanxi is a lively commercial street filled with cafés, boutiques and plenty of tempting eats. Nature lovers will also enjoy a peaceful stroll at the Haizhu National Wetland Park, one of the city’s best green escapes.
📌 Getting there: Take the Guangzhou Metro to Canton Tower Station (Line 3) or Pazhou Station (Line 8) for easy access to the best spots.
Tianhe: Diving into Futuristic Guangzhou

Prepare for a radical shift in atmosphere as we make our way to the Tianhe district! Tianhe is Guangzhou straight out of a sci-fi movie: towering glass skyscrapers that brush the clouds, colossal shopping centres (the Taikoo Hui, for example, sprawls across 8 floors of pure luxury!), and an ultra-modern business hub. This is 21st-century China, wide awake and buzzing with an energy that never sleeps.
But the real spectacle truly begins once night falls. Make your way to Zhujiang New Town, where the towering skyscrapers illuminate the night sky along the river. You can also soak in breathtaking panoramic views with a drink in hand at one of the district's many vibrant bars (with a special shout-out to the incredible rooftop spots at Canton Tower and IFC Mall!).
📌 Getting there: The Zhujiang New Town metro station (Lines 3 and 5) offers direct access right into the heart of this dazzling, illuminated district.
Liwan: Uncover the vibrant traditions and local culture of Guangzhou

Liwan offers a captivating glimpse into Guangzhou before its economic boom. Picture narrow, cobbled alleyways, charming low-slung red-brick houses, and bustling traditional markets where stalls overflow with unfamiliar vegetables and live fish swim in their tanks.
Shangxiajiu Street is bustling with people from morning till night, especially at weekends. What's more, you'll find historic tea houses like Lian Xiang Lou tucked away here; just imagine: they've been serving dim sum since 1889 in a wonderfully preserved historic setting!
The Chen Temple (or Chen Clan Ancestral Hall), an architectural masterpiece in the neighbourhood, is absolutely worth a detour for its exquisite wood carvings that beautifully showcase the legendary craftsmanship of Cantonese artisans.
📌 Pro tip and a fantastic find: The morning dim sum at Lian Xiang Lou or Taotaoju is an absolute must-try experience (arrive before 9 am to avoid the queues!).
Yuexiu: the perfect blend of nature and city life

Next up on your must-see list: Yuexiu! What makes it so special? This neighbourhood offers a perfect blend of nature and city life. For starters, Yuexiu Park, with its 86 hectares of lush greenery, provides a welcome breath of fresh air right in the heart of the bustling metropolis. The famous Five-Ram Sculpture (a symbol of the city since 1959) proudly takes centre stage, and you'll often find locals practising their morning tai chi here in a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere.
Then, there's Beijing Road, a bustling shopping district stretching for several kilometres. But here's a fascinating detail: beneath the transparent glass panels set into the pavement, you can glimpse the remnants of the ancient road, dating back through multiple dynasties! You're literally treading on 2,000 years of history as you shop!
The Museum of the Nanyue King Mausoleum is absolutely worth a stop (especially on a rainy day!). This exceptional archaeological site tells the fascinating story of the Nanyue kingdom, which vanished over 2000 years ago. The funerary objects on display (jade, gold, bronze) boast exquisite craftsmanship and speak volumes about a sophisticated civilisation.
📌 Trip.com's top tip: visit the museum in the morning, then grab lunch at one of Beijing Road's canteens (you absolutely *must* try the shaomai and cheung fun!).
Shamian Island: A Colonial Time-Travel Adventure

It's barely 900 metres long, but oh, what an atmosphere awaits! This tiny island, nestled on the Pearl River, instantly whisks you away to 19th-century Europe. When China opened its concessions, both the French and British settled here, leaving behind a truly remarkable architectural legacy: think elegant neoclassical facades, a stunning Gothic Church of Our Lady of Lourdes (built in 1892), and former consulates now transformed into chic cafés… You'll almost feel like you've stepped right into Europe!
Today, Shamian has transformed into a true open-air museum, boasting over 150 preserved historic buildings. Once you're there, what can you expect? Indulge in delightful strolls beneath the century-old banyan trees, then immerse yourself in a contemporary art gallery housed within a former colonial bank, before settling down for a coffee on a charming terrace with stunning river views.
The atmosphere remains wonderfully peaceful, even in the middle of the week – what a delightful contrast to the bustling city centre just a stone's throw away!

During the Qingming Festival holiday, my wife and I brought our two kids to Guangzhou. We considered many hotels, as we have high standards, and after several days of searching, we finally settled on this well-established local 5-star hotel, which offers incredible value for money. The hotel's location is superb, with free underground parking, making it perfect for those traveling by car. The service standards are very high; the staff are enthusiastic and patient, and we were very satisfied with our stay. The soundproofing in the room was excellent – it was completely quiet at night. Being on a high floor, the view was also great. Often, older hotels have outdated facilities, but this one's rooms are very well-equipped and maintained, and the cleanliness was exceptional. There was no musty smell at all. A significant bonus was that food delivery orders are brought directly to your room by a robot, which was incredibly convenient, and the kids absolutely loved it! Right across from the hotel is Guangzhou East Railway Station, and the F exit of the subway is just 100 meters to the right from the hotel entrance. Directly opposite the hotel is the large shopping mall, Oriental Baotai. There are also 3-4 Luckin Coffee shops nearby, and a FamilyMart convenience store downstairs, making dining and getting around incredibly convenient. The hotel's buffet breakfast offers a mix of Chinese and Western dishes, and the taste was excellent. Our stay was absolutely perfect, and we will definitely choose this hotel again next time we visit Guangzhou. It will be our top choice from now on.FromPHP 3,617

The staff were very kind to accommodate to our unusual requests for check-in and check-out times because of our flights. Special mention to Lisa the housekeeper for being so attentive to our needs during our stay here. The staff are friendly, helpful, and speak good English, which makes communication very easy. The room is spacious, clean, and well equipped with everything needed for a comfortable stay. The Wi-Fi is also fast and reliable, which is very important for work.

The hotel's location is great, and the decor is really on point. The hygiene and environment are spotless, and the overall service is excellent. The mini-fridge was well-stocked with drinks.
The only downside was breakfast. Many tables weren't set with cutlery. Guests would get their food and then have to wait for chopsticks, spoons, and forks – I've never encountered this before. This issue continued throughout the meal. I hope the restaurant pays more attention to this crucial detail, especially when it's busy and turning over tables for breakfast.FromPHP 5,929

My experience at the hotel started off on a bad note right from the moment I arrived.
Firstly, my luggage was in the trunk, and I was struggling to get it out by myself. A hotel staff member was standing right next to me, holding someone else's bags, just waiting – he didn't offer to help me at all.
While I was still struggling with my luggage, the staff member told me not to close the car trunk. I didn't quite understand him at first, so I closed it as usual. He then actually made a 'tsk' sound in annoyance. Apparently, the reason he was just standing there waiting was because the guests whose luggage he was holding had booked the same car I was getting out of, and he had intended to put their bags straight in. But because I closed the door, he had to open it again, which clearly irritated him.
Then, in the lobby, I was focused on filling out some paperwork with my head down and inadvertently walked to the side. The manager politely informed me that I needed to join the queue, which I completely understood. However, he spoke to me while I was concentrating, startling me, which caused the document I was on the verge of finishing to be lost, and I had to start all over again.
Finally, the front desk staff had a good attitude. But even though I arrived at nearly 1 PM on a Monday, a weekday, the hotel had no rooms available for check-in. I understand I was an hour earlier than the official check-in time, but I've stayed at so many hotels before – The Ritz-Carlton, Niccolo, Hyatt, Hilton – and I've never encountered a situation on a weekday at this time where there were no rooms available. It completely disrupted my plans; my phone and laptop were both dead, and I had to wait in the lobby, which was very disappointing.
While I was sitting on the sofa in the lobby, a man even asked me for food. I was genuinely shocked that someone like that could gain entry to the main lobby.
To add to that:
On my first night, I discovered that the electric blind in the bathroom for the bathtub was broken and could only be pulled down partway. I was too tired to bother fixing it and just wanted to sleep when suddenly the faucet started dripping… The next morning, when I went to blow-dry my hair in the bathroom, the outlet had no power, so I couldn't use the hairdryer either…FromPHP 6,748

I chose the veteran Guangzhou Baiyun Hotel because of its bustling commercial surroundings and convenient transportation. It's just a short bus ride to Guangzhou Wanguo Outlets, and other attractions are also easily accessible! I highly recommend trying the food at Da Ge Restaurant when you're in Guangzhou. This isn't my first time staying here. This time, I suddenly decided to bring my child along, so I used a package I'd bought previously. The package was quite good value, though the king room felt a bit small for a family. The Kapok Suite I stayed in before was much more suitable, large, and comfortable. It would be great if the packages offered more options. This particular package didn't include a breakfast buffet. I find that Garden Hotel's buffet breakfast has more Western options (perhaps catering to the many foreign guests here), which I'm not used to 🤦♂️. I prefer Chinese food, so we usually opt to eat breakfast at nearby places. There are numerous dim sum restaurants within walking distance, like Lei Garden, Guangzhou Restaurant, and Tao Tao Ju – plenty of choices to suit any budget. Hotel service is, as always, impeccable (^-^)o🍴. The service was very attentive and prompt. Traveling with a child, we received a lot of kindness. It’s a great hotel for families with kids in the city center. Even if you don't go out, there’s enough to keep the kids entertained within the hotel. As a long-established hotel, the facade and lobby are grand and exude a luxurious atmosphere from a period of economic prosperity, haha 😄. Some of the room furniture is a bit older, but it’s well-maintained, and the wooden antique furniture still has a certain charm. This package included two buffet dinners at Ling Xuan Pavilion. The restaurant rotates, which is quite interesting. The food itself was just okay, nothing particularly noteworthy. There wasn't much selection for raw sashimi, but the cakes were quite good, so it was acceptable. Mainly, the ambiance and service were good. On a side note, the hotel has many elevators, and they respond quickly. As expected, food delivery isn't allowed up to the rooms; you have to pick it up from the delivery locker downstairs.FromPHP 7,126

Guangzhou's top-tier hotel cluster is probably one of the most concentrated among first-tier cities in China, featuring the likes of the Four Seasons, Rosewood, Park Hyatt, Ritz-Carlton, and Jumeirah. In terms of location, they're all pretty much the same, and prices are comparable. I actually find the Ritz, with its non-sky lobby, more convenient. However, the Ritz's service level is leaps and bounds ahead of the others. They seem to have a much more generous staff allocation than those other hotels. Combined with their strict adherence to standards, both warmth and efficiency are guaranteed. Even when returning to the hotel at night, there are dedicated security personnel at the elevator entrance. It often feels like there are more Ritz-uniformed service staff in the lobby than guests, and they consistently proactively approach you to ask if you need anything. This is a well-established five-star hotel in a bustling area, offering excellent service, quality, and atmosphere. Its prime location is a major plus, with various bus lines and Metro Line 2 right outside, making it incredibly convenient to get around. Yesterday morning, for instance, it only took 20 minutes and four metro stops from the hotel to Haizhu Square (Exit F) to catch the Guangzhou-Huizhou bus, making the trip to Shuangyue Bay in Huizhou super easy. The hotel's food street also has good quality options; I recommend the intangible cultural heritage Zhusheng Noodles. Good review for Jinli Hotel (Guangzhou East Railway Station Branch).
It was very busy at night, and there was only one person, so checking in was quite inconvenient. This could be improved.
My stay at Jinli Hotel this time exceeded my expectations! The location is excellent, right near Guangzhou East Railway Station, just a few minutes' walk away, making travel incredibly convenient. It's also very friendly for self-drivers, with free and ample parking, and smooth entry and exit.
The rooms and public areas were very clean, and the facilities were well-maintained, with no strange odors or stains. The bedding and bathroom facilities were quite new, making for a reassuring stay. The good parts: The hotel upgraded my room, and the front desk staff provided excellent service. The concierge also helped guests retrieve their deliveries.
The location is great, and the hotel rooms have been recently renovated. However, they didn't replace the old windows, so they're not soundproof. The hotel is located directly under a flight path, and I could hear loud airplane engines all night, making it impossible to rest.
Areas for improvement: The concierge staff don't actively greet guests. Many just wander around the lobby without proactively assisting or acknowledging guests. I even encountered a concierge in the elevator who didn't hold the door for me and simply walked away.
The room service staff don't meet the standards of a five-star hotel. They were very reluctant to change the duvet and didn't make the bed properly. After doing very little, they would ask guests for good reviews.

🥢 Guangzhou, Home of Authentic Cantonese Flavours

Guangzhou truly lives up to its reputation as China's gastronomic paradise. Why, you ask? This vibrant city is the authentic birthplace of Cantonese cuisine, one of the four great Chinese culinary traditions.
The local saying '食在广州' (eat in Guangzhou) beautifully encapsulates just how central food is to the local way of life.
The Yum Cha and dim sum ritual
Yum Cha (literally 'drinking tea') is a cherished social institution in Guangzhou. This delightful tradition is best experienced in the morning or early afternoon, when tea houses truly come alive and families gather to share moments.
The idea is simple: you order some tea (often pu-erh, jasmine, or chrysanthemum), and then a delightful parade of dim sum arrives, served in traditional bamboo steamers. Har gow (those delightful translucent prawn dumplings), siu mai (open-topped pork and prawn parcels), char siu bao (fluffy, steamed buns filled with succulent barbecued pork), and cheong fun (silky rice noodle rolls) are just some of the beloved classics you'll find.
Historic establishments like Lian Xiang Lou (open since 1889) or Taotao Ju lovingly keep this tradition alive, all within an authentic setting.
📌 Top Tip: arrive early (before 9 am) to beat the crowds and get your pick of the menu. On weekends, some tea houses are completely full as early as 8:30 am!

This colossal event has been a global magnet since 1957, drawing in tens of thousands of exhibitors and buyers from every corner of the globe. It all unfolds at the magnificent Pazhou Complex, Asia's largest exhibition centre, boasting an incredible 1.18 million square metres of space! Prepare to be amazed!
The fair unfolds in three exciting phases, spanning a period of around three weeks:
- Phase 1 is all about electronics, machinery, and industrial products.
- Phase 2 is all about consumer goods, home decor, and furniture.
- Phase 3 is all about textiles, fashion, and delicious food!
🔥 When the Canton Fair is on, hotels get snapped up in a flash and prices can really soar! If you're hoping to join the excitement, be sure to book your hotels well in advance!
