🏘️Must-Visit Districts in Guangzhou

Once you arrive, you'll soon discover that Guangzhou is one of China's largest cities! It spans an area of approximately 7,434.4 km²! But don't worry, you'll find most of the must-see attractions concentrated in just a few districts. Here are our top picks for districts you absolutely can't miss!

Haizhu: Riverside Views and Local Guangzhou Life

Haizhu Tram Line 1

Exhibition Hall of China Import and Export Fair

Haizhu, a district that blends peaceful riverside living with some of Guangzhou’s most iconic sights. This is where laid-back neighbourhoods meet major landmarks, giving you a perfect mix of nature, culture and modern city life.

Start with the unmissable Canton Tower, rising beside the Pearl River and offering some of the best views in the city. Close by in Pazhou, you’ll find the Canton Fair Complex, a major draw for international visitors. For a scenic and relaxing journey, hop on the Haizhu Tram, which glides through leafy areas and modern riverside developments.

If you want to enjoy Guangzhou’s nightlife, head to Party Pier for open-air bars, great food and beautiful views across the water. For shopping and local vibes, Jiangnanxi is a lively commercial street filled with cafés, boutiques and plenty of tempting eats. Nature lovers will also enjoy a peaceful stroll at the Haizhu National Wetland Park, one of the city’s best green escapes.

📌 Getting there: Take the Guangzhou Metro to Canton Tower Station (Line 3) or Pazhou Station (Line 8) for easy access to the best spots.

Tianhe: Diving into Futuristic Guangzhou

Tianhe Guangzhou

Tianhe Guangzhou

Prepare for a radical shift in atmosphere as we make our way to the Tianhe district! Tianhe is Guangzhou straight out of a sci-fi movie: towering glass skyscrapers that brush the clouds, colossal shopping centres (the Taikoo Hui, for example, sprawls across 8 floors of pure luxury!), and an ultra-modern business hub. This is 21st-century China, wide awake and buzzing with an energy that never sleeps.

But the real spectacle truly begins once night falls. Make your way to Zhujiang New Town, where the towering skyscrapers illuminate the night sky along the river. You can also soak in breathtaking panoramic views with a drink in hand at one of the district's many vibrant bars (with a special shout-out to the incredible rooftop spots at Canton Tower and IFC Mall!).

📌 Getting there: The Zhujiang New Town metro station (Lines 3 and 5) offers direct access right into the heart of this dazzling, illuminated district.

Liwan: Uncover the vibrant traditions and local culture of Guangzhou

Liwan

Liwan offers a captivating glimpse into Guangzhou before its economic boom. Picture narrow, cobbled alleyways, charming low-slung red-brick houses, and bustling traditional markets where stalls overflow with unfamiliar vegetables and live fish swim in their tanks.

Shangxiajiu Street is bustling with people from morning till night, especially at weekends. What's more, you'll find historic tea houses like Lian Xiang Lou tucked away here; just imagine: they've been serving dim sum since 1889 in a wonderfully preserved historic setting!

The Chen Temple (or Chen Clan Ancestral Hall), an architectural masterpiece in the neighbourhood, is absolutely worth a detour for its exquisite wood carvings that beautifully showcase the legendary craftsmanship of Cantonese artisans.

📌 Pro tip and a fantastic find: The morning dim sum at Lian Xiang Lou or Taotaoju is an absolute must-try experience (arrive before 9 am to avoid the queues!).

Yuexiu: the perfect blend of nature and city life

Yuexiu Park

Guangzhou Museum

Next up on your must-see list: Yuexiu! What makes it so special? This neighbourhood offers a perfect blend of nature and city life. For starters, Yuexiu Park, with its 86 hectares of lush greenery, provides a welcome breath of fresh air right in the heart of the bustling metropolis. The famous Five-Ram Sculpture (a symbol of the city since 1959) proudly takes centre stage, and you'll often find locals practising their morning tai chi here in a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere.

Then, there's Beijing Road, a bustling shopping district stretching for several kilometres. But here's a fascinating detail: beneath the transparent glass panels set into the pavement, you can glimpse the remnants of the ancient road, dating back through multiple dynasties! You're literally treading on 2,000 years of history as you shop!

The Museum of the Nanyue King Mausoleum is absolutely worth a stop (especially on a rainy day!). This exceptional archaeological site tells the fascinating story of the Nanyue kingdom, which vanished over 2000 years ago. The funerary objects on display (jade, gold, bronze) boast exquisite craftsmanship and speak volumes about a sophisticated civilisation.

📌 Trip.com's top tip: visit the museum in the morning, then grab lunch at one of Beijing Road's canteens (you absolutely *must* try the shaomai and cheung fun!).

Shamian Island: A Colonial Time-Travel Adventure

Shamian Island

It's barely 900 metres long, but oh, what an atmosphere awaits! This tiny island, nestled on the Pearl River, instantly whisks you away to 19th-century Europe. When China opened its concessions, both the French and British settled here, leaving behind a truly remarkable architectural legacy: think elegant neoclassical facades, a stunning Gothic Church of Our Lady of Lourdes (built in 1892), and former consulates now transformed into chic cafés… You'll almost feel like you've stepped right into Europe!

Today, Shamian has transformed into a true open-air museum, boasting over 150 preserved historic buildings. Once you're there, what can you expect? Indulge in delightful strolls beneath the century-old banyan trees, then immerse yourself in a contemporary art gallery housed within a former colonial bank, before settling down for a coffee on a charming terrace with stunning river views.

The atmosphere remains wonderfully peaceful, even in the middle of the week – what a delightful contrast to the bustling city centre just a stone's throw away!

My stay at the Jianguo Hotel Guangzhou was fantastic! The hotel's location is superb, very close to the Tianhe Flower Market, making it incredibly convenient for getting around and shopping. The room was clean and tidy, with great natural light and ventilation. The bedding was comfortable, and I slept very soundly. The front desk service was warm and attentive; check-in was quick and efficient, and the staff were friendly and responsive to all my needs. The overall environment is quiet and elegant, with complete facilities, offering excellent value for money. It's perfect whether you're visiting Guangzhou for Chinese New Year and the flower market, or for a business trip. I had a comfortable and reassuring stay, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Tianhe. I'll definitely choose this hotel again next time!

This is an excellent hotel! I've stayed at Wyndham hotels in other cities before, but the Guangzhou Wyndham really stands out. Everything from the environment to the service and breakfast was superb! All the staff were very polite and the service was impeccable! The breakfast had a huge variety and was absolutely delicious 👍. Whether it was the front desk, the concierge, the housekeeping staff, or the restaurant team, everyone was incredibly friendly and made you feel right at home! The most important thing was that I lost my headphones and the hotel proactively contacted us to let us know! Truly grateful 🙏. I'll definitely choose Wyndham again on my next visit.

Had the best 7 nights in this hotel! The room is so spacious, so clean and the lighting in the room makes it so comfy and welcoming! Too comfy till we didn’t want to leave the room 🤣 The hotel is in a very good location too. Walking distance to grandview mall and parc central and just downstairs there’s so many eateries that opens late at night too. Food is def not a problem. It’s a good place for didi pickups/drops off too and accessible via the one link mall too. Big big kudos to the staff in this hotel. Everyone from the entrance to the reception and to housekeeping are so friendly and professional. They make us feel so welcomed and we truly appreciate all their assistance towards us, especially before we arrive when we had to arrange transport and upgrade our rooms. Thanks for answering our queries so quickly and providing such excellent service to us. We truly love our stay and will definitely choose to stay here again!!

After booking the room in advance, the hotel butler, Vicky, called to confirm my check-in time for the next day and added me on WeChat. The next day, before I checked in, I contacted him, and he patiently explained which high-speed rail station I should alight at. After I checked in, he sent up some fruit. The hotel is a well-established five-star property, with a beautiful lobby that had a festive New Year's atmosphere. The room was clean and comfortable. I'll definitely stay here again next time I'm in town. It was a very satisfying travel experience!

I chose to stay at the Sheraton Guangzhou again. My flight arrived late at night, and I checked in well past midnight. I contacted the hotel in advance to reserve a room, and they gave me the high-floor room I prefer! Although Guangzhou has been quite hot these past few days, the air conditioning in the hotel was too cold. I had to call housekeeping again at night to ask for an extra blanket, and they brought it very quickly! I really have to commend the customer service staff; whether it was day or night, they were able to quickly resolve any requests and were always incredibly enthusiastic and polite! The hotel room was spacious and bright, the shower had great water pressure, and the toiletries were good too! The executive lounge only has a two-hour happy hour for dinner; otherwise, it only offers soft drinks. The dinner at the executive lounge was quite good, with delicious dishes and desserts! For breakfast, I chose the buffet restaurant on the 2nd floor. Since it was Chinese New Year and there were many guests, the breakfast area was very crowded, and everyone had to queue for a table. Luckily, the food selection was rich and of good quality. I highly recommend the wonton noodles; they taste fantastic! There's a wide variety of teas for breakfast, including red date and goji berry tea, red date and ginger tea, Hong Kong-style milk tea, floral tea, black tea, green tea, etc., all of which are good. Plus, you can take coffee and tea to go from the breakfast restaurant, which is a real bonus! The hotel's location is excellent, right near Tee Mall and Grandview Mall, making shopping and dining incredibly convenient! And since it's in the city center, getting anywhere is easy! Check-in and check-out at the front desk were both quick and efficient! I'll definitely stay here again!

Facilities: The room itself was quite nice, though the lighting felt a bit dim. Service: The hotel service was exceptionally good. When checking in, the front desk proactively informed me about breakfast discounts. When I said I'd consider it, they weren't displeased at all. Anything I requested was delivered quickly. When I called to book breakfast, the front desk directly registered it for me without making me go downstairs to pay. Environment: Good. There's a shopping mall nearby, and it's quite a bustling area. Hygiene: Very good.

When I checked in at the Baiyun Hotel in Guangzhou this time, I had booked a Business Executive King Room. However, the front desk informed me that it was fully booked and I could only get a standard king room. This was a clear downgrade from the room type and price I had reserved. The 25th floor, which I specifically wanted, is a non-smoking floor. Unfortunately, all the rooms of my booked type on the 25th floor were occupied. While there were rooms available on other floors, they were not non-smoking areas. Due to health reasons, I am very sensitive to cigarette smoke, so I was reluctantly forced to take a standard king room on the 25th floor. This was quite frustrating and annoying. Additionally, in the bathroom, it was very difficult to switch the shower faucet to the showerhead; it took me a long time to finally get it to work. I hope this can be looked into and maintained.

This Chinese New Year, instead of joining the bustling crowds, I chose to stay at the Sofitel Guangzhou Sunrich for a peaceful, introspective getaway. I brought my family along to celebrate the New Year here. Outside, there might have been fireworks, but inside, it was just the quiet comfort of books and warm tea. In this non-stop world, sometimes being able to simply zone out for a bit, or slowly enjoy a cup of tea without rushing, is truly something to celebrate. The New Year doesn't have to be about hectic travel and exhaustion; it can be about finding peace within yourself, and in a warm space, hearing your inner 'Happy New Year.' This Spring Festival, staying at the Sofitel felt like stepping into a warm, open, and inviting hotel. The New Year activities in the lobby were a big hit with guests, and the free couplet writing was a really creative touch. Mia at the front desk was also incredibly, incredibly enthusiastic with her service.

The staff were polite and courteous. The room wasn't very big, but for the price, it was pretty good. It was clean and hygienic, though the facilities felt a bit outdated, like they were from many years ago. However, there were no strange odors in the room. Overall, it was decent for the price. The transportation was very convenient, right on Huanshi East Road. There are also plenty of great food and drink options nearby, all within easy walking distance. Zhixin Middle School, Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, and Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center are all about a ten-minute walk away. I really don't understand why this place only has a 4.4 rating. We stayed in room 3009, which the front desk upgraded for us. The room was spacious, quiet, clean, tidy, and had large windows letting in plenty of sunshine. The adjacent room, 3010, was a bit smaller. The elevator was fast and quiet, much better than the one at another duplex apartment in Zhengjia Plaza. When we arrived, two handsome young men immediately came to help us with our luggage and brought it to our room. By the way, even a five-star hotel like the Garden Hotel doesn't offer this kind of service; we always have to carry our own luggage there, without even a chance to tip. The breakfast was small, exquisite, and delicious – perfectly adequate. The view from outside the restaurant was lovely; enjoying breakfast while looking at the scenery outside the window in the morning put us in a great mood. The restaurant staff were very friendly and enthusiastic, thumbs up! This was the most satisfying hotel of our trip, and we've stayed at places like the Jin Mao in Shanghai, the Garden Hotel in Guangzhou, and the Howard Johnson in Sanya.

The hotel is conveniently located near Zhujiang New Town's Huacheng Square, surrounded by many large shopping malls, making dining, shopping, and entertainment easily accessible. While the subway station is close, the line doesn't directly connect to the core areas of Tianhe District. If you stay here, you'll likely need to take a taxi for convenient travel. Another point worth mentioning is that for a five-star hotel, it's quite inconvenient not to have robot room service for food delivery. Every time I ordered takeout, I had to go down to the delivery cabinet myself to pick it up. Overall, the environment and facilities are excellent, and the 24-hour gym is a great bonus for a quick run anytime.

Stepping into the lobby, I was immediately drawn to the majestic money tree in the center, which gave the whole place a lavish and opulent feel. The front desk ladies were all very welcoming. They offered me a refreshing herbal tea while I was checking in. My assigned room was on a smoking floor, and they kindly asked if I'd prefer to wait for a non-smoking room, which would take about an hour. They also mentioned I could simply return to the front desk later, or find a staff member in a distinctive shiny uniform if it was busy, which was a thoughtful touch. I spent the waiting time exploring the garden. The hotel's outdoor pool on the fourth floor was a bit chilly for this time of year, but the two outdoor massage pools were very relaxing. Both the men's and women's changing rooms had saunas, and there was also a gym. I booked a garden view twin room this time. The beds were quite large, and there was a small sofa, which made it very comfortable for staying with children. However, I really wasn't a fan of the bathtub; I felt a bit awkward even wearing clothes, worried my son might see me. Check-out was also very convenient. I'd definitely consider staying here again on my next trip to Guangzhou. It's right next to the metro station, which is super convenient, and there are many dining options nearby like Datong Restaurant and Guangzhou Restaurant across the street, offering plenty of culinary choices. Ordering takeout was also easy.

The hotel's location is super convenient, close to the subway, and it's just a 10-minute walk to Canton Tower. There are several malls nearby like IFC and Gaode Land, but it's not noisy at all – a real oasis of calm in the city. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. Check-in and check-out were quick and efficient. Just a heads-up, the front desk is on the 17th floor, and guest rooms are between the 11th and 17th floors. You'll need to switch elevators to get to the ground floor. The elevators for the guest rooms are a bit small, so you might have to wait a little longer during busy times. The night view from the room was fantastic! Huacheng Square is right downstairs, with water features and greenery – perfect for photos.

Honest review: The room was quite clean, smoke-free, and odorless, right across from Guangdong TV Station. High floor with a wide view. It's listed as a 5-star hotel, but I'd say it's an older 5-star. There were many foreign guests from various continents and countries. My room's electronic control system had some issues; it wasn't very responsive. While taking the elevator, I also overheard others saying they had no hot water at 1 AM?! Not sure if that's true. The front desk service was excellent. They allowed a late checkout until 2 PM, which was perfect because my flight was delayed. I ended up checking out almost an hour later, and the hotel staff showed no dissatisfaction, which is why I'm giving it a full 5 stars.

I came for the Baietan fireworks, as it's Chinese New Year. The last time I stayed at China Hotel, A Marriott Hotel, Guangzhou was around 2019. This time, I could tell they've undergone a renovation; the rooms are much more spacious. The elevators are well-configured, and wait times are short – even during the Chinese New Year holiday, they were fast and not crowded. The hotel offers a wide variety of restaurants, and guests get a 15% discount. The pool and sky garden were very clean. Housekeeping staff were friendly. The only hiccup was during check-in; despite plenty of available rooms, both of my rooms were assigned to the shaded side. One of them was even in the very corner of the shaded side, and when I entered, the duvet felt a bit damp. After calling the front desk, they quickly changed our rooms, but it did dampen my mood a bit. Perhaps next time, they could ask about guests' preferences in advance.

Evaluating your hotel stay is essential to sharing your experience with others or planning future trips. Here are some descriptive evaluations based on common factors: The hotel was ideally situated close to major tourist attractions, making it easy to explore the city. However, accessing public transport could have been simpler. The check-in process was a breeze, with friendly staff who greeted us warmly. We felt welcomed right from the start. Upon entering our room, we were pleasantly surprised by its cleanliness and the overall ambiance. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and the decor gave a cozy feel. However, the Wi-Fi connection was a bit unreliable, which was inconvenient for our planning. The common areas were well-maintained and inviting. We enjoyed the on-site restaurant, which offered a diverse menu. The breakfast buffet was especially noteworthy, with fresh options every morning. The main reason was that Hampton's rooms are more spacious and look very clean. Upon arrival, all the services were excellent. They kindly upgraded our room type for free and even recommended some great local restaurants, which was really a nice touch! I've stayed in so many hotels, but this was the first time I've encountered complimentary late-night snacks. Our family trip over the Chinese New Year holiday was a seven-day, six-night stay in Guangzhou, occupying two rooms. Considering we were traveling with both seniors and young children, we felt choosing a well-established five-star hotel would be the most reliable option, and it turned out both the elderly and the kids were extremely satisfied. We arrived on the third day of the ***** new year, and thanks to the handsome front desk staff, Mr. Xie and Mr. Li, for helping us select comfortable rooms, our holiday got off to a great start. We hadn't initially booked breakfast, but after seeing the breakfast area in the morning, the seniors insisted on eating at the hotel. We found Ms. Yang and Ms. Dan, who also arranged a discount for the child. Because we had to change our booking in the middle of our stay, we switched rooms once, and the front desk staff, Ms. Wen and Ms. You, adjusted the room according to our needs. This kind of personalized service made our trip feel extra warm and comfortable. In other aspects, the hotel is very close to Yuexiu Park and the subway station, and transportation and shopping in the surrounding area are also very convenient.

Even during the Chinese New Year, the overall service standard at the Four Seasons in Guangzhou remained consistently high. Its location is absolutely prime, being one of the 'Big Three' hotels. Right downstairs, you'll find multiple shopping malls and parks, and several Michelin and Black Pearl restaurants are within walking distance. The housekeeping service was incredibly meticulous; the handwritten notes left daily were a thoughtful and heartwarming touch. However, the front desk service was quite disappointing. On my first day, since I was staying for three consecutive nights and hadn't booked the basic room category, I casually asked if a room upgrade was possible. During Chinese New Year, it's totally understandable if an upgrade isn't available. But the front desk staff immediately, without even checking availability, said no. I could clearly see online that all room types had vacancies that day, which suggests it was purely an attitude problem. On my third day, I extended my stay for the original room online and then went to the front desk to re-activate my key card. To my surprise, the front desk told me to come back and change the key card when I checked out tomorrow. This kind of inflexibility was quite baffling. It's worth noting that on both occasions I went to the front desk, there were four staff members and I was the only guest, so there was no issue of them being busy or overwhelmed. Overall, the Four Seasons is still the Four Seasons, but the service gap between the front desk and housekeeping departments was surprisingly vast.

Across the street, Haizhu Square has a subway entrance, and Beijing Road Pedestrian Street is just a 10-minute walk. All modes of transport are easily accessible, making it perfect for families, especially those with elderly members. The room size was just right, and the direct view of the Pearl River and Canton Tower at night was a huge bonus. Although it's an older 4-star hotel, it's very well-maintained, likely having undergone renovations. The service quality is on par with the White Swan Group – all our requests were understood and promptly addressed. Personally, I believe the most important aspects when choosing a hotel are cleanliness, service, and location, and Huaxia scores full marks on all three. I feel it offers excellent value for money. The hotel breakfast is on the 39th floor. While the selection might be a bit less than a 5-star hotel, it's more than sufficient. If you're a serious food lover and traveling without family, I'd suggest skipping breakfast at the hotel and trying morning tea at nearby Taotaoju, Guangzhou Restaurant, or Fanlou. Xiangqun Restaurant, known for its authentic local home-style dishes, is also very close by. I hope this recommendation helps fellow travelers!

We stayed in a twin room with our child. The single bed was a bit small, and I'd recommend adding a safety rail to prevent kids from falling off! The breakfast selection was pretty average in variety and taste, a mix of Chinese and Western. Maybe it's because I'm from the North, and my palate is different. I really don't understand the policy that kids over 1.2m have to pay (ours wasn't over this height). I mean, surely kids don't eat independently until at least third grade, and younger kids need an adult with them. If it's a family room, it would be very inconvenient for families with older children! Everything else was standard; there's no self-service laundry or robot delivery. The room was great, clean, and the service was good too. One thing though, I was never informed my room was ready. I only received a text that it was clean after I had already checked in, tired with my child, back at the hotel.

Shamian Island and Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street Guangzhou|9.14km from city centre
This is our second stay at White Swan Hotel, and the experience was even better than the first. This time, I came with my partner and we chose a Deluxe River View room. Room 2105 had an amazing location with a fantastic, expansive view. The room layout was very well-designed; everything felt comfortable and convenient. Housekeeping was prompt, and we had turndown service every evening, so the room was spotless whenever we returned. The hotel's breakfast buffet was excellent. Although we couldn't get a reservation for the signature morning tea this time, we did manage to book dinner at Yu Tang Chun Nuan, and the food quality was truly outstanding. Even with a long wait, it was absolutely worth it. Right out the hotel's back door is Shamian Park, and across from Shamian is the Link Plaza, making dining and shopping incredibly convenient. I especially love the cocktail buns from Cui Hua Restaurant – they taste just like the bread from my childhood, great value for money. The hotel's location is superb, making it easy to visit attractions like Yongqing Fang, Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street, and Cultural Park; we walked to all of them. White Swan was Guangzhou's first five-star hotel, opening in 1983. Decades later, the hotel is still meticulously maintained, with every detail reflecting the high standards expected of an established five-star property. It truly lives up to its reputation as a symbol of Guangzhou. I believe that on my next visit to Guangzhou, I will still choose the White Swan Hotel, because a classic endures through generations.

🥢 Guangzhou, Home of Authentic Cantonese Flavours

Cantonese morning tea (Yum Cha)

Cantonese Dim Sum in Guangzhou

Guangzhou truly lives up to its reputation as China's gastronomic paradise. Why, you ask? This vibrant city is the authentic birthplace of Cantonese cuisine, one of the four great Chinese culinary traditions.

The local saying '食在广州' (eat in Guangzhou) beautifully encapsulates just how central food is to the local way of life.

The Yum Cha and dim sum ritual

Yum Cha (literally 'drinking tea') is a cherished social institution in Guangzhou. This delightful tradition is best experienced in the morning or early afternoon, when tea houses truly come alive and families gather to share moments.

The idea is simple: you order some tea (often pu-erh, jasmine, or chrysanthemum), and then a delightful parade of dim sum arrives, served in traditional bamboo steamers. Har gow (those delightful translucent prawn dumplings), siu mai (open-topped pork and prawn parcels), char siu bao (fluffy, steamed buns filled with succulent barbecued pork), and cheong fun (silky rice noodle rolls) are just some of the beloved classics you'll find.

Historic establishments like Lian Xiang Lou (open since 1889) or Taotao Ju lovingly keep this tradition alive, all within an authentic setting.

📌 Top Tip: arrive early (before 9 am) to beat the crowds and get your pick of the menu. On weekends, some tea houses are completely full as early as 8:30 am!

💼The Must-Visit Event: The Canton Fair

Whether you're a seasoned pro in international trade or just a curious soul eager to witness one of the world's most colossal trade fairs, then you absolutely must know about the Canton Fair (China Import and Export Fair), which graces Guangzhou twice a year! This colossal event has been a global magnet since 1957, drawing in tens of thousands of exhibitors and buyers from every corner of the globe. It all unfolds at the magnificent Pazhou Complex, Asia's largest exhibition centre, boasting an incredible 1.18 million square metres of space! Prepare to be amazed!

The fair unfolds in three exciting phases, spanning a period of around three weeks:

  • Phase 1 is all about electronics, machinery, and industrial products.
  • Phase 2 is all about consumer goods, home decor, and furniture.
  • Phase 3 is all about textiles, fashion, and delicious food!

🔥 When the Canton Fair is on, hotels get snapped up in a flash and prices can really soar! If you're hoping to join the excitement, be sure to book your hotels well in advance!
