We stayed for 2 nights when we visited the Dordogne region, if you are looking for the best place to stay, relax and have excellent food. Then this is the place to stay. The best experiences on our road trip in France this year.

The location is lovely, the service - greeting, front desk, restaurant, chefs - was first class. Everyone seemed happy to be working there. Our friendly Maitre de was helpful enough to draw one of our possible choices - oursin- picture attached. I asked for a signed copy as he is clearly an artist! No it’s not a prairie oyster. Dinner was excellent and breakfast did not disappoint with eggs prepared as requested. We’re back in September.

Our stay at Moulin du Roc was nothing short of spectacular. The inn feels like walking into a dream. The inn is nestled next to a quietly flowing river, in the country side, it feels secluded and special. Once inside the inn, you notice the exquisite furnishings, and the warm greetings of the people who work there. The restaurant has beautiful oil paintings, and apples over the tables and in the bookshelves, it feels like entering a Dutch still life painting. Very poetic, but also warm and casual. Our room was carpeted, and very comfortable. Lamps everywhere, and a comfortable mattress and pillows. We slept very well!!! Our room had a full size bathtub, and a wonderful shower with powerful water flow, that gave a spa feeling. A very large bathroom, felt very luxurious.. Breakfasts at the inn was absolutely delicious, as was dinner. The preparation and design of the food is both comforting and complex, and the service is nothing short of excellence! I absolutely loved the apples on the tables, and the beautiful prism lighting. It made dining in the interior and on the patio to be magical experience. It is these little touches that makes this inn so wonderful! Also the side lounge is so comfortable, they played jazz, and we sat in the lounge after dinner relaxing and taking it all in. I would have loved to have a digestif in this lounge if they offered it, something local like a walnut wine or eau de vie. This inn feels like staying at an intimate bed and breakfast. You feel the soul and the warmth. I am so happy we decided to stay here for 3 nights! We were a bit worried it might feel too remote, and also considered staying in Brantome, but I am so so happy we did not. Brantome is wonderful and we explored it thoroughly, but this inn made the visit to this area of the countryside memorable. Driving every night back to the inn after touring the area felt the perfect way to end the day. We did not get a chance to play tennis, or swim in the pools, but they do offer this.

Unfortunately, we had only booked one night here on our way north and we wish we had booked more - we absolutely loved this hotel. From the moment we arrived, when a member of the Team came out to the car park to welcome us, we had a most memorable time in this little haven of peace and tranquility. It is the most amazing conversion of an old mill, retaining the heritage of the mill but encapsulating excellent traditional decor and furnishings in the public rooms. There is a lovely terrace/deck suspended over the river with comfortable seating ideal for a pre dinner aperitif. The restaurant had a lovely atmosphere and we were lucky enough to have amazing weather so an excellent dinner and excellent breakfast were taken on another delightful terrace next to the river. With fresh linen table clothes, lovely individual lighting on the tables and impeccable service it was an amazing experience. The swimming pool situated in the extensive gardens reached by a small bridge over the stream added to our enjoyment of our stay. The bedroom, again, met and exceeded all our expectations - all the facilities you needed, plus a beautiful bathroom with a large walk in shower and a jacuzzi bath. Perfect. What a perfect place to stay on our way back to catch the ferry - it really was in our view the most perfect example of how a character hotel in the Dordogne should be, and we can't wait to return. Thank you to all the staff who made us feel so welcome.

What can we add to what previous travellers have already written here? Unique setting, warm welcome, efficient service, gorgeous rooms, excellent cuisine ... We were here on our second honeymoon to celebrate our upcoming retirement: we couldn't have found a better place! We were offered an upgrade to suite-level. We should have reserved more nights ...

Another visit to this lovely hotel on our journey down through France. A peaceful setting with the river flowing smoothly by, and the birds singing. The room as comfortable as ever, dinner and breakfast on the terrace by the river both delicious. Special thanks to the staff who assisted when my husband had a medical problem. They could not have been kinder or more helpful.

This is a fabulous property with notable food (one rosette Michelin star and soigne cuisine) and an enchanting setting on a stream with sn active mill. The gardens, patios and interiors, including the room are charming and comfortable. Gracious and helpful staff...truly a magical spot.

It's expensive, but there's no mistaking this is a beautiful and unusual hotel. We received a fantastic, friendly welcome and our bedroom was very charming with a fabulous bathroom and beautiful view of the river. In the summer, with the pool and tennis courts, it would be a breathtakingly lovely place to stay. (Unfortunately, we were there in October and although most of this October has been stunning, it decided to rain that day/night) The fact that dogs are made so welcome (they even provided blankets for them) is a bonus for those of us who have dogs. We had a very nice meal in the restaurant too, though the description 'gastronimique experience' in their emails and website perhaps dates from the time it had a Michelin star. (To be fair though, we didn't choose any of the dishes with supplements that were on offer.) The wine list was extensive with bottles ranging from one or two at €35,00 to those costing more than €1.000,00 (for connoisseurs).

I found this a very difficult experience to rate. I wavered between a score of three and four and could so easily have given a five, if it weren't for the expectations created, partly, by the price. There's no mistaking this is a beautiful, unusual hotel, with an outstanding front of house team who couldn't be more welcoming. Our bedroom was charming with a fabulous bathroom and beautiful view of the river. In the summer, with the pool and tennis courts, it would be an absolutely breathtakingly lovely place to stay. And the fact that dogs are made so welcome is a bonus for those of us who have dogs. The problem is, personally, I don't think the food is quite as good as they think it is; it certainly didn't quite match up to our expectations having read other reviews and their own descriptions. We'd stayed overnight on a special package which included breakfast and evening meal. Our room was priced at €195,00 after a 25% out of season discount, which meant that the included meal was valued at around €100,00 per person. This does not include wine (expensive), water or even coffee. It does however, include a welcome aperitif. The problem is the food was good; it wasn't, unfortunately, outstanding. It lacked any 'wow' moments, and although my pollock was cooked to perfection, the cooked scallops in my starter were very slightly tough and my rum baba dessert was a little dry and lacked finesse. There are, unfortunately, much better restaurants in the Perigord, which wouldn't be a problem if the price and attitude reflected this.
