Shanxi Hotel

The room was fantastic! The hotel is in a great location, right in the heart of Liuxiang, and there are excellent restaurants nearby. The breakfast also had a unique Taiyuan flavor. I'll definitely stay here again next time!

Had a very pleasant stay. The room was clean and cozy, the shower was spacious, and all the toiletries were provided – they even had laundry detergent! The breakfast spread was incredibly rich, and they even offered *baijiu* (Chinese liquor).

I rarely write reviews, and I usually tolerate things rather than complain, but this Shanxi Hotel is honestly completely useless and a huge disappointment. 1. Four multi-story buildings surround a large central courtyard, which is surprisingly an outdoor parking lot. It's packed with cars, and because it's a 'replica antique' building with decorative lighting, there are tourists everywhere taking photos at night. Add to that the constant movement of cars in and out of the parking lot, and you tell me if that feels high-end or not. 2. You check in at one building, then have to drag your luggage across the parking lot to another building because the poker-faced receptionist said all the deluxe rooms were in that other building. Then, for breakfast the next day, you have to cross the parking lot again to yet another building. You tell me if that's a smart setup or not. 3. Upon arriving at the building where the deluxe rooms are located, you won't find any staff on the first floor. The elevator lobby is cramped and dimly lit, and there isn't a single service person, making it feel like an old-fashioned guesthouse. You tell me if that's unsettling or not. 4. My room faced the parking lot. The wooden frame of the bathroom mirror was damaged. The two glass doors, nearly three meters high, between the room and the bathroom were already difficult to slide, and to top it off, they were broken and wobbling precariously. I immediately called for repairs. Two staff members, a man and a woman, came in and, without any polite greeting, just asked, "Which door?" We went out for dinner, leaving them to fix it. When we returned, the doors were secured, but only one could be moved, and even then, you had to squeeze sideways to get through. You tell me how great that is. 5. Breakfast... There was a large conference the day I stayed, so breakfast was moved to a conference hall in a side building. The hall was huge, but the food selection was very limited, mostly noodles and stir-fries. There was no fresh juice, but there was baijiu. The noodle chef was quite patient, and the restaurant staff's attitude was decent. Overall, both the hardware and software feel like an old state-run guesthouse. The facilities are old and run-down, the environment is noisy, and I couldn't find any redeeming qualities. It just uses the 'Shanxi Hotel' name and relies on the evening lighting photos to trick people. Unless it undergoes a complete renovation and brings in a new hotel management team, there's no hope.

My first impression was breathtaking. Built on the former site of the Ming and Qing Imperial Examination Hall, which Yan Xishan later converted into the 'Hall of Self-Reflection', the hotel has been beautifully renovated and rebuilt. The design, featuring grand courtyards, is incredibly stately and well-organized, with glazed tiles on the roofs and dark green and ochre hues dominating the color palette. It immediately won us over. Secondly, the service was exceptional. When checking in, I asked the front desk for an extra quilt and pillow. The young lady at the desk immediately responded, saying there were extra quilts in the room and asking if I was traveling with a child and their age. After confirming, and with my agreement, she promptly called housekeeping to request that the twin beds be combined into a large bed, and to provide a full set of extra toiletries. She also mentioned that our assigned floor offered a beautiful night view and specially highlighted that guests could visit Chunyang Palace for free (highly recommended! A morning stroll there reveals many remarkable sights, and it's also the second branch of the Shanxi Museum). Upon entering the room, several thoughtful details stood out: first, there were USB charging ports and even a wireless charging pad; second, the overall space was compactly and rationally designed. Initially, I thought there was no place to dry clothes, but then I discovered a hidden gem in the bathroom – a simple retractable clothesline installed in the shower area (so it wouldn't get wet or in the way when showering); third, two pairs of plastic slippers and two pairs of disposable slippers were provided; fourth, the TV remote control was disinfected and sealed in a plastic bag; fifth, the bathroom sink was deep, perfect for handwashing small items of clothing; sixth, there was an evening fruit platter and yogurt; and seventh, there was surprisingly a laundry room, and quite a large one at that, complete with sofas for waiting, an antique-style display cabinet, complimentary laundry supplies, clean laundry bags (for washed clothes), three sets of washing machines and dryers, and even small washing machines. Although the hotel was renovated in 2013, the facilities are still very good across the board. In our room, only the bathroom countertop showed a bit of wear, but everything else was excellent. The cleanliness was also top-notch. For a summer holiday, the price of just over 500 RMB felt like great value for money. Furthermore, the location is superb, right in the city center, making it convenient to get anywhere. There are many delicious eateries around the hotel, and it's very close to Zhonglou Street and Causeway Bay Shopping Center, which is incredibly convenient. To support the hotel and experience more, we specifically bought three breakfasts on our last day. The variety was extensive, and surprisingly, they even offered various alcoholic beverages like Fenjiu and rice wine. I was very satisfied. I initially thought the service at an older hotel would be mediocre, but I was delighted by so many thoughtful touches. I'm truly happy and will definitely choose Shanxi Hotel again on my next visit to Taiyuan. I genuinely love it, which is why I've written so much, and I hope they continue to maintain this standard!

The room was excellent, clean, and spacious, with great service. We tried the hotel's buffet, which was fantastic! Breakfast was also very good, and the lamb soup was amazing! We were able to check out late, at 2 PM, which perfectly aligned with our high-speed train back to Beijing. We also received complimentary tickets to Chunyang Palace, which was a great bonus.

Every time I visit Taiyuan, I stay at Shanxi Hotel. Its location right next to Wuyi Square is fantastic, making getting around incredibly convenient. Taxis are often waiting right outside the main entrance. Behind the hotel, there's a small park, perfect for a stroll and enjoying the views. The front desk service is friendly and welcoming. The Baisuilan room type offers great views and excellent housekeeping, located on the 11th floor of the main building. The breakfast is rich and delicious, and the Fenjiu self-service option adds great value for money. Shanxi Hotel is a popular spot for night views in Taiyuan; every evening, many tourists arrive early to wait by the main entrance for the beautiful lights to turn on. The Jinfu Tower restaurant inside the hotel is considered the pinnacle of Shanxi cuisine in Taiyuan, making it difficult to get a table during peak hours. The dishes are truly remarkable and worth experiencing. I highly recommend Shanxi Hotel!

The room in this hotel was quite small, definitely not a standard size. With two adults, one child, and luggage, the space felt a bit cramped. Everything else was fine though. The buckwheat pillows were really comfortable; I even bought two to send home. The restaurant was incredibly popular. We couldn't get a table the first day, but managed to get in for lunch the next day. Every dish was excellent, no misses at all!

The room was great, very clean, and the service was top-notch. The complimentary fruit was fresh, and I was able to take some Instagram-worthy photos from the room window. Breakfast was rich and delicious. Choosing this hotel was an excellent decision.

Staying at Shanxi Hotel was a great experience. The building itself has a rich history, originally serving as a Ming and Qing Dynasty imperial examination hall. The night view with all the lights is stunning, and the location is excellent; it's right by Wuyi Square, making it very convenient to get to all the attractions. The staff were friendly, check-in was efficient, and room service was prompt. Communication was smooth whenever I had a request. For example, my shoes broke, and when I asked the front desk for shoe glue, they delivered it to my room even before I had fully settled in. The room facilities were decent and well-maintained. The breakfast offered a wide variety, including many local Shanxi noodle dishes. Overall, it was a good travel and living experience. Complimentary fruit upon check-in. Free ticket to Chunyang Palace.
