Island hopping in Kota Kinabalu is truly possible! Learn to snorkel!

Island hopping in Kota Kinabalu is truly possible! Learn to snorkel!

🏝️ Island Selection Before coming, I looked at some guides, mainly recommending 4 islands: Mermaid Island, Sapi Island, Manukan Island, and Mamutik Island. The choice was effortless because I only considered the distance It is said that it takes three hours to get to Mermaid Island, which means a six-hour round trip, so I didn't consider it without staying on the island; Sapi Island requires one hour, so two hours for a round trip, and thinking about my seasickness, I gave up. So my choices were narrowed down to Sapi Island and Manukan Island 🌟 Highlights I signed up for a one-day tour of Sapi + Manukan, starting at 8:30 in the morning, gradually filling up a car, about 10 people, and we were the last two. (It turns out that it's only a 10-minute walk from our hotel to Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal. Waiting for the speedboat 🚤 at the terminal, it took 15 minutes to reach Sapi, and the trip included a seafood buffet lunch. (Pretty bad First, we played some water sports at Sapi, and at 1 PM, we moved on to Manukan. There were obviously more fish 🐟 at Manukan, and even my husband, who is usually a landlubber, couldn't resist snorkeling. As for me, lying on the white sand, I was drowsy 😪 and very comfortable, with the ants on the sand being insignificant ☁️ We returned to the terminal around 4:40 PM and went back to the hotel 🏨, changed clothes, and went straight to watch the sunset, which we made in time. PS. 🏨 The Hyatt Regency Kinabalu is very convenient for transportation, just across the street from Suria Sabah Shopping Mall, where you can buy clothes directly if you didn't bring enough - and there are many restaurants worth checking in nearby: oldtown white coffee (everyone should go, just order anything ), Sin Kee Bak Kut Teh (the dry noodles and bak kut teh are really good), and the seafood 🦞 lobsters really need to be garlic-flavored!!!

Kota Kinabalu: A Dreamy Journey to Borneo.

Kota Kinabalu: A Dreamy Journey to Borneo.

Kota Kinabalu, the capital of Sabah, Malaysia, boasts stunning natural beauty, diverse cultural heritage, and mouthwatering cuisine. Whether you're an adventurous explorer or a laid-back vacationer, Kota Kinabalu has something for everyone. Follow our guide and embark on an unforgettable journey! 📍Must-Visit Attractions: 1. Kinabalu Park: Located 83 km from Kota Kinabalu city, it's Malaysia's first national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. With pristine ecological protection, it boasts a wide variety of plant species from tropical to temperate zones, making it a paradise for nature lovers. Challenge yourself by climbing Mount Kinabalu, Southeast Asia's highest peak, and enjoy breathtaking views from the summit. Alternatively, stroll through the botanical garden at the mountain's base and admire rare plants. The best climbing season is from February to April. Remember to book your accommodation in advance! 2. Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park: Situated in the South China Sea off the coast of Kota Kinabalu, it comprises five islands: Gaya, Sapi, Mamutik, Manukan, and Sulug. With crystal-clear water and white sandy beaches, it's an ideal spot for water activities and snorkeling. Swim with colorful tropical fish, explore vibrant coral reefs, or relax on the beach. Each island boasts a unique ecosystem, so you might even spot rare amphibians! 3. Kota Kinabalu City Mosque: Located beside a beautiful lagoon, it's one of Kota Kinabalu's most iconic landmarks and a popular spot for photos. The mosque's architecture is unique, inspired by the Nabawi Mosque in Saudi Arabia, and can accommodate 9,000 to 12,000 worshippers. At night, under the moonlight and starlight, the mosque and the water surface reflect each other, creating a mesmerizing view. 4. Gaya Street: One of the most bustling streets in Kota Kinabalu city, it's filled with local vibes. Traditional Chinese buildings line both sides, with shops on the ground floor and residences on the upper floors. Many Chinese-owned restaurants, cafes, and souvenir shops are located here. You can savor authentic Bak Kut Teh, Laksa, and White Coffee, and purchase unique handicrafts and souvenirs. Every Sunday morning, Gaya Street hosts a vibrant market selling various goods, offering a great opportunity to experience local customs. 5. Tanjung Aru Beach: Renowned as one of the world's three most beautiful sunsets, it's Kota Kinabalu's most famous beach. At dusk, the sun slowly sets, painting the sky with vibrant colors. Golden rays bathe the sea surface, creating shimmering waves, a breathtaking sight. Stroll along the beach and admire the sunset's beauty, or enjoy dinner at a nearby restaurant for a romantic evening. 🥘Food Recommendations: 1. Bak Kut Teh: This is Sabah's signature dish, featuring pork ribs and herbs simmered together. The strong garlic and herbal flavors permeate the pork, creating a unique taste. Yaw Kee Bak Kut Teh and New记 Bak Kut Teh are both renowned local shops, worth trying. Yaw Kee Bak Kut Teh's spare ribs Bak Kut Teh is particularly delicious, and the deep-fried dough sticks soaked in the soup are even more delectable. New记 Bak Kut Teh's claypot stewing method enhances the herbal flavor, and their coconut pudding is also a must-try. 2. Seafood: As a coastal city, Kota Kinabalu offers a wide variety of fresh seafood. Double Heaven Seafood Restaurant serves fresh ingredients, with creamy tiger prawns, stir-fried scallops, steamed grouper, and curry flower crab as their signature dishes. If you're looking for a more budget-friendly option, head to Central Market to choose your own seafood, then have it processed on the second floor. 3. Laksa: This is a noodle dish with a strong Southeast Asian flavor, containing small green limes, prawns, bean curd skin, bean sprouts, and curry. It has a slightly sweet taste. Ee Feng Tea House's Laksa is a Sabah classic, beloved by locals. 4. Coconut Jelly: On a hot day, nothing beats a refreshing coconut jelly. It has a smooth texture and rich coconut flavor, making it a perfect thirst quencher. 5. Durian: Malaysia is famous for its durian, and Kota Kinabalu offers a wide variety of durian species with delicious flavors. You can sample various durian delicacies at Durian Street, such as durian honey and durian ice cream. You can also purchase fresh durian to bring back and share with family and friends. 🛍Shopping Guide: 1. Imago Shopping Mall: Located in the city center, this mall boasts various international brands and local specialties. With a comfortable environment, it's a great place for shopping and leisure. 2. Handicraft Market: If you're looking for locally-made handicrafts, head to the Handicraft Market. It offers wood carvings, silverware, woven products, and more. You can choose some as souvenirs or gifts for friends and family. 3. Night Market: Kota Kinabalu's night market is bustling, with many stalls selling local food, snacks, fruits, and souvenirs. Here, you can savor authentic local cuisine and experience the city's nightlife atmosphere. 🚗Transportation Guide: 1. Airplane: Kota Kinabalu International Airport is Sabah's main airport, with flights from various domestic and international destinations. From China, you can choose direct or connecting flights. 2. Public Transportation: Kota Kinabalu city has convenient public transportation, including buses, taxis, and minibuses. Buses cover a wide area but have fewer routes. Taxis and minibuses are relatively expensive but more convenient and faster. 3. Car Rental: If you want to explore Kota Kinabalu's surrounding attractions freely, consider renting a car. Many car rental companies are available locally, but remember to follow traffic rules and prioritize driving safety. 💡Travel Tips: 1. Kota Kinabalu has a tropical rainforest climate, with high temperatures and frequent rainfall year-round. It's recommended to bring lightweight, breathable clothing and sunscreen. 2. When participating in water activities, prioritize safety and follow the instructor's guidance. 3. Respect local religious and cultural customs. Avoid wearing revealing or inappropriate clothing in mosques and other religious places. 4. Soak, Splash & Stroll – A Nature Retreat at Poring Hot Spring!

Soak, Splash & Stroll – A Nature Retreat at Poring Hot Spring!

Location: Ranau, Sabah (about 2.5–3 hours drive from Kota Kinabalu) Getting There 🚗⛰️ We took a road trip from Kota Kinabalu and the journey itself was full of green views, winding roads, and chill kampung vibes. You’ll pass small towns like Tamparuli and Ranau—perfect for a quick snack or photo stop. Tip: Drive early to enjoy the cool mountain air! Attractions ♨️🌿 Poring is more than just hot water in a tub—it’s a full-on nature escape! Our favourites: soaking in the warm sulphur hot springs (so good for tired legs!), walking across the rainforest canopy bridge (a little scary but the views were worth it!), and visiting the butterfly garden and Kipungit Waterfall. If you’re lucky, you might even spot the famous Rafflesia flower in bloom! Hotels 🏡🌙 There are great options if you plan to stay overnight! You can book a chalet right inside the Poring area for easy access, or stay at nearby places like J Residence or Kinabalu Pine Resort in Kundasang. Homestays in Ranau also offer cozy stays with mountain views and local charm. Food & Restaurants 🍜☕ Inside the park, there’s a small canteen that serves local dishes like fried rice, noodles, and warm drinks. Simple but satisfying! Around Ranau, you’ll find stalls selling Sabahan goodies like hinava, tuhau, and fresh pineapples. It’s the kind of food that hits different when you’re surrounded by nature. Shopping 🛍️ Outside the entrance, there are cute little stalls selling handmade souvenirs, snacks, keychains, and natural soaps made with hot spring minerals. Great spot to grab something local and support the community. Final Thoughts ❤️ Poring Hot Spring is the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. Whether you want to soak in the hot spring, explore the rainforest, or just breathe in the fresh mountain air—it’s all here. A must-visit when you’re in Kundasang or heading back from Kinabalu Park. Bring comfy clothes, an extra towel, and your chill vibes!

Some of the popular tribes here include Kadazandusun, Bajau, Rungus, Murat and various other indigenous groups. Visiting to the Mari-Mari Cultural Village, this is an attraction where you can learn more about the tribes such as blowpipe-making demonstration, fire-starting demonstration using bamboo, tattoo-making demonstration, and get an in-depth look at the mystical symbolisms behind them. Visitors will also get chance to sample Sabahan traditional delicacies from each ethnic group. Highly recommend everyone to go for the package includes with the transportation (round-trip) as the village is located at a remote forest where it is extremely hard to get a taxi or grab. Kota Kinabalu! Highly recommended!!!

Kota Kinabalu! Highly recommended!!!

✔️ Most hotels and restaurants are located near Gaya Street, or you can stay at Shangri-La Hotel, which is conveniently located near these two places. ✔️ It's the off-season in Kota Kinabalu, so there aren't many people even on weekends. You don't need to queue at attractions or restaurants. The cost for a 3-day, 2-night trip is less than MYR 3,000. Go for it! ✔️ The sea view here is very weather-dependent. It's really beautiful on sunny days. ✔️ The temperature is around 25 to 30 degrees Celsius, which is very comfortable. However, it can be windy sometimes, so remember to wear sunscreen and sunglasses! ✔️ Most attractions are located in and around the city, and are quite close to each other. A one-day tour can be a bit rushed, but a two-day, one-night weekend tour is more relaxing. ✔️ You can join a tour group! There are many one-day tours to choose from, such as the mangrove forest, Mantanani Island, or Mount Kinabalu. ✔️ Watch the sunset ▪️ Tanjung Aru Beach: You can take photos of the sunset with reefs, beaches, waves, and distant mountains. ▪️ Shangri-La Hotel Beach: The sunset here is as beautiful as Tanjung Aru Beach, and the photos are stunning. ✔️ Must-see attractions Mangrove forest (fireflies, sunset, and proboscis monkeys are not to be missed) Tanjung Aru Beach (the coastal road is also beautiful) Kinabalu Park Mantanani Island (island hopping, scuba diving, and snorkeling) Tanjung Aru sunset paddleboarding Gaya Street Night Market
