Soak, Splash & Stroll – A Nature Retreat at Poring Hot Spring!

Soak, Splash & Stroll – A Nature Retreat at Poring Hot Spring!

Location: Ranau, Sabah (about 2.5–3 hours drive from Kota Kinabalu) Getting There 🚗⛰️ We took a road trip from Kota Kinabalu and the journey itself was full of green views, winding roads, and chill kampung vibes. You’ll pass small towns like Tamparuli and Ranau—perfect for a quick snack or photo stop. Tip: Drive early to enjoy the cool mountain air! Attractions ♨️🌿 Poring is more than just hot water in a tub—it’s a full-on nature escape! Our favourites: soaking in the warm sulphur hot springs (so good for tired legs!), walking across the rainforest canopy bridge (a little scary but the views were worth it!), and visiting the butterfly garden and Kipungit Waterfall. If you’re lucky, you might even spot the famous Rafflesia flower in bloom! Hotels 🏡🌙 There are great options if you plan to stay overnight! You can book a chalet right inside the Poring area for easy access, or stay at nearby places like J Residence or Kinabalu Pine Resort in Kundasang. Homestays in Ranau also offer cozy stays with mountain views and local charm. Food & Restaurants 🍜☕ Inside the park, there’s a small canteen that serves local dishes like fried rice, noodles, and warm drinks. Simple but satisfying! Around Ranau, you’ll find stalls selling Sabahan goodies like hinava, tuhau, and fresh pineapples. It’s the kind of food that hits different when you’re surrounded by nature. Shopping 🛍️ Outside the entrance, there are cute little stalls selling handmade souvenirs, snacks, keychains, and natural soaps made with hot spring minerals. Great spot to grab something local and support the community. Final Thoughts ❤️ Poring Hot Spring is the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation. Whether you want to soak in the hot spring, explore the rainforest, or just breathe in the fresh mountain air—it’s all here. A must-visit when you’re in Kundasang or heading back from Kinabalu Park. Bring comfy clothes, an extra towel, and your chill vibes!

Mercure: Superior Room with a View

Located at the edge of Jalan Gaya, Mercure Kota Kinabalu is really a strategic hotel to be at when visiting KK. We used this as a base for a weekend and it was perfect 🤩 for visiting Gaya Street Market and the cafes & restaurants at Jalan Dewan. The beds are comf. Air conditioning and hot water work like charms. TV channels may be a little limited and the volume on the TV seems a bit muted but its okay if you plan to be out most of the time. The room layout is better than the superior room without view in that the beds face the TV rather than the bathroom/toilet. The superior room toilet configurations aren’t great in that there is a foot-high gap between the ceiling and the door, there are gaps at the sides of the doors, and the glass frosting is a little light for my liking. Pretty okay for family but may not be great for friends or colleagues travelling together. I would recommend their one-bedroom suite for more toilet privacy (remember to request for twin beds if applicable). All in all, a good stay. We paid RM191 for our superior room with a view, RM40 more than the one without a view, but the layout was worth it! 🥳 #wecreate #accorhotels #kotakinabalu

Shangri-La's Breakfast Experience in Kota Kinabalu

Recommended hotel in Kota Kinabalu, Shangri-La Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa Kota Kinabalu. The breakfast venue is the restaurant "TATU" located on the first floor of the hotel. It offers a rich variety of buffet-style meals, including Malaysian cuisine, Western food, Korean dishes, and a bit of Japanese food, so you can enjoy a range of different dishes. Not only inside, but there are also food and drinks available in the outdoor area, so going to get them is quite an effort (in a good way). There are performances like brewing Turkish chai and staff dressed in character costumes entertaining the children, adding to the entertainment value. My recommendation is the noodle corner that changes daily. I liked being able to try various Asian noodles. Why not taste a variety of dishes according to your mood for the day? GOLFING IS AN ATTRACTION? YES, MY DEAR!

GOLFING IS AN ATTRACTION? YES, MY DEAR!

⛳️ Likas Golf Club, Golf Driving Range, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Golfing is one of the best attraction in Sabah, especially tourist from Japan and Korea. The reason why is because of the ‘low costs’. Can you imagine, 100 balls only for RM10.60 with no entrance fee at all? Don’t you think it’s crazy? I was impressed. That was cheap! Way too cheap!!! No wonder this place are famous among the people who love golfing from all around the world. Parking place were spacious, no worries. Clean toilet.

Monsopiad Cultural Village - Borneo, Malaysia

The famous village is located near the Kota Kinabalu Natural Park. Buses do not go here, so for an independent visit you need to either hire a taxi or book a tour at a tour desk in the state capital of Sabah. Monsopiad Cultural Village is located near the capital Sabah. This is a small settlement, which is a private property, in which an atmosphere reigns, recreated by the descendants of the legendary tribe to attract tourists. In honor of the arrival of the tour group, they arrange a real enchanting holiday with dances and chants that clearly show the history of these places. The guests are escorted to a hut, under the ceiling of which there are 42 skulls of people allegedly killed by the famous Monsopiad. Whether they are real or not, there is no way to know. But the remains look very colorful and naturalistic. #bucketlistreboot #malaysia #summervacation

Sabah State Museum (Muzium Sabah)

Sabah State Museum (Muzium Sabah)

#kotakinabalutrip One of the most fun museums I’ve been to. Entering through an interactive arts, crafts, and games section I was immediately impressed by the toys and brain teasers they had. An impressive collection of artefacts, instruments, and taxidermies of flora and fauna await inside. Featuring many Interesting individual artifacts, it is well worth a visit. Not the kind of museum that creates a narrative, nor does it have much breadth, but there's plenty to engage visitors. The outdoor "village” of traditional homes is also worth visiting, though more interpretive information would be welcome. 📍Address: Jalan Muzium, 88300 Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia

Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu: A Dreamy Stay

Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu: A Dreamy Stay

Shangri-La Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu: A Dreamy Stay In Kota Kinabalu, there is a place like a paradise on earth - Shangri-La Tanjung Aru. Once you step into the hotel, the lush greenery will catch your eye. The hotel corridor is like a path through a tropical rainforest, and the exquisite plant decorations make you feel like you are in a mysterious tropical jungle. But be careful of the occasional gecko. Here, whether in the corridor or the lobby, you can enjoy a unique view as long as you sit down, as if time has stopped for this beautiful scenery. The hotel's private beach is a highlight, as it is one of the "world's three most beautiful sunset spots." When the sun sets and the afterglow shines on the sea, the view is breathtaking. As for the rooms, although it is an old hotel and the facilities are a bit outdated, the cleanliness is impeccable. Each room has an outdoor balcony. The sea view room allows you to enjoy the beautiful sunset without leaving the room. The orange-red sunset reflected on the sea is like a natural oil painting. The mountain view room offers a wonderful view of the sea and mountains. Different rooms have different views, each with its own merits. Each room is also equipped with a capsule coffee machine, which is a thoughtful benefit for coffee lovers. The service is also commendable. From the moment you arrive at the hotel, the staff enthusiastically helps with your luggage and takes it directly to your room. The breakfast is rich and varied, catering to the tastes of travelers from all over the world. You can see many Korean tourists here. The hotel also has its own pier and boats, making island hopping and fishing very convenient. We went fishing, and it cost CNY 1,744 for four people to charter a boat for three hours. The unit price is higher for the first two hours, and it is cheaper to add an hour. The boat is spacious and can accommodate 6-8 people. If you want to save money, sharing a boat is a good choice. Although we only caught one small fish, we followed local regulations and released fish smaller than a forearm. This experience was also very interesting. In short, there are surprises everywhere, and it was an unforgettable stay.

Mount Kinabalu is the tallest mountain in Malaysia. The summit, Low's Peak, sits at 4095.2 meters (13,435 feet) above sea level. The mountain is located in the state of Sabah, East Malaysia on the island of Borneo. Among the mountains in Malaysia, it is the most prominent. Mount Kinabalu is one of the highest mountains in Southeast Asia. It is also the 20th tallest mountain in the world by topographic prominence and is one of the highest peaks in the world that is easily trekked by most people. Before Covid-19 pandemic, there were 185 climbing permits issued daily by Sabah Parks (Sabahan 10 pax, Malaysian 25 pax, Malaysian and/or International 150 pax). This is for safety reasons, so they could help to oversee on climbers’ safety upon ascending to Low’s Peak summit in total darkness. It is also to ensure the summit climb is not overcrowded by climbers. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation, there are now only 150 climbing permits issued daily by Sabah Parks as of 23 October 2021. #grouptravel
