Must-See Exhibitions at the British Museum | The Many Faces of the Late Qing Dynasty

The British Museum's five-year preparation for the major exhibition 'China’s hidden century' will commence on May 18, 2023. This is the world's first major exhibition covering the entire 19th century China, showcasing the extraordinary resilience and creativity of the time through stories of people from all walks of life. The major exhibition will present 300 pieces of 19th-century Chinese paintings, calligraphy, and objects from different museums and collectors, some of which will be brought together for the first time. The exhibition is divided into six main themes: politics, military, art, urban life, globalization, reform and revolution, intending to open a new page for the public to understand the modern history of China. The exhibition's portrait posters attracted widespread attention at home and abroad upon their announcement. The British Museum officially wrote: 'Perhaps individual stories are insignificant compared to the fate of the nation. However, beneath a series of dramatic historical events are vivid personal experiences in the court, in the military, in the bustling international metropolises, and even on the global stage. This special exhibition will follow the stories of individuals from different social classes and fields to explore the various facets of society.'
