Tokyo's Connel Cafe: A Serene Coffee Corner in the City

Connel Cafe is located on the second floor of the Sogetsu Kaikan building in Tokyo's Akasaka district, a structure designed by renowned architect Kenzo Tange. The cafe is situated across the street from the Crown Prince's residence, with views of the Memorial Park outside. Designed by the Nendo design studio, the cafe retains the building's original architectural features while enhancing the spatial experience with modifications to the flooring. The interior features glass walls that bring the outdoor scenery inside, making the greenery of the nearby park feel almost within reach. The stone garden in the courtyard has also been preserved. The name "Connel" is derived from the Japanese word "捏ねる" (koneru), which means "knead" or "mold." The cafe offers unique touches such as malleable tin stirring rods and water cup handles with a handcrafted rustic feel. In addition to serving delicious coffee, the cafe provides a highly affordable lunch buffet, with curry flavors that change daily. The curry is aromatic and mildly spiced. Here, you can enjoy coffee while taking in the scenic views, making for a truly relaxing experience.
