Chin Lin Nunnery A Tranquil Oasis of Buddhist Serenity
#wecreate
Known for its graceful architecture, meticulously manicured gardens, and deep-rooted Buddhist traditions, the nunnery offers visitors a retreat from the bustling city and an opportunity to immerse themselves in the teachings of Buddhism. Chin Lin Nunnery traces its roots back to the Tang Dynasty, making it one of the oldest Buddhist monastic complexes in Hong Kong. Originally established in the 1930s, the nunnery underwent extensive renovations in the 1990s, blending traditional architectural techniques with modern innovations. The nunnery serves as a symbol of resilience and preservation, carrying forward the rich Buddhist heritage of Hong Kong and offering visitors a glimpse into the spiritual traditions that have thrived for centuries.

Chi Lin Nunnery and Nan Lian Garden
Chi Lin Nunnery and Nan Lian Garden are located at Diamond Hill in the north of Kowloon surrounded by high-rise apartments. It’s a serene and calm place to visit, such a strong contrast with the surrounding city area. The entire garden was designed in the style of the Tang dynasty. Beautiful flowers, lotus pond, plants, pavilions, bridge and buddha pagoda. It provides a tranquil retreat especially for busy working adults. I really like the ambiance here, peaceful, and relaxing. I could spend hours here just sitting, walking and admiring the fascinating stones, rocks, and wooden structures. It also featuring the Hall of Celestial Kings and Buddha Sakyamuni. There was a nice tea house and a vegetarian restaurant there.
How To Get There: Take MTR to Diamond Hill station, Exit C2.

Nan Lian Garden is a beautiful and peaceful place to visit in Hongkong. It is right opposite of Chi Lin Nunnery. We enjoyed walking around and took photos of the traditional chinese architecture plus the green surroundings and all these are for free. Yes, it is open for public free of charge which was really amazing 😅. You may include this place to visit in your future itinerary and I am very sure you are going to love the ambiance here.
Tips: Don't forget to bring your umbrellas especially during summer. 😃

📍5 Chi Lin Drive, Sheung Yuen Leng, Hong Kong.
After visiting the Famous temple Wong Tai Sin Temple, the next stop is Chi Lin Nunnery which is located within the area and can reach by walking around 20 minutes.
The nearest MTR station is Diamond Hill Station Exit C2. Opposite Nan Lian Garden.
The beautiful architecture was rebuilt in 1998, inspired by the traditional architecture of the Tang Dynasty. The size of temple is huge and divided into three zones. The first is the lotus pond garden, the second is the hall of Celestial Kings, and the third is the main hall of the monastery complex, featuring the Sakyamuni Buddha. Free admission and selfie stick is prohibited in the temple.

It was first opened to the public in 2006 and became an attraction to tourists. It is connected to the Chi Lin Nunnery by a pedestrian bridge.
My fav is the Pavilion of absolute perfection. It's so beautiful in its gold color. Admission is free except for some special events and exhibitions in the Xiang Hai Xuan exhibition hall.
There are some garden rules, i.e. using tripods for photography is not allowed, eating and drinking (except water) is not allowed in the garden except in designated areas, and visitors are also requested not to walk on the grass.
There is a shop for souvenirs, and restaurant that offers vegetarian sandwiches and beverages and also a set menu on holidays.

Hong Kong is a truly fascinating city, where the East meets West. You will be amazed by the architecture and the tall skyscrapers dominating the landscape; astonished by the contrasting views and landscapes of the different islands and will certainly enjoy the variety of food the city has to offer.
To get away from the crows of Kowloon, I would strongly recommend visiting the Nan Lian Garden – a Chinese classical garden with amazing bonsai trees and huge Koi carp fish.
Whilst there, pay a visit to the Chi Lin Nunnery – a large Buddhist temple complex featuring statues made from gold, clay, wood and stone. A great way to enjoy a beautiful peaceful walk after the busy streets and night life of Hong Kong.

This Buddhist temple dates to the 1930s but was rebuilt in the 1990s in traditional Tang Dynasty style. The structures are all made of wood, and the large complex is incredibly impressive. In front of the complex are carefully sculpted bonsai trees surrounding the Lotus Pond Garden, with several ponds featuring water lilies.
The Chi Lin Nunnery and the nearby Nan Lian Garden are located in Diamond Hill, in Kowloon. To reach the site, take the MTR Kwun Tong Line to Diamond Hill Station, Exit C2.

Beautiful golden temple in Hong Kong
The chi Lin nunnery is just near the mrt and it is so peaceful! Go visit! #hkthroughmyeyes
The Tang-style temple is a rare sight
The Zhi Lian Jing Yuan temple is designed based on the 'Contemplation of Infinite Life Sutra' mural from Cave 172 North of the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang during the prosperous Tang Dynasty. The layout centers on a main axis, reflecting the symmetrical and balanced architectural style of the Tang era. A small portion of the construction techniques also adopts the Japanese 'Wa-yo' style. The entire building is constructed entirely of hinoki wood, making it the largest hand-built wooden structure in the world today.
Chi Lin Nunnery spectacular landscape🥰😍

Vegetarian food at Chi Lin Nunnery
Yummy food, portion was a little small and on the pricey side, but yummy. The vibe of the restaurant was calm and very comfortable. No additional 10% nor tea fee. Overall a great experience.
Loads of Buddhas
Reaching the garden was ready on the MTR -got off at Diamond Hill station and walked. Amazing garden with temples for Buddhist worshipping within. If you take the time, you can visit every Buddha and learn about them - and yes they are all different! There was also a paid tea exhibit in one corner of the Nunnery. A beautiful display of religious devotion and meticulous commitment to the art form of bonsai.

Hong Kong Deep Travel - Chi Lin Nunnery
The Chi Lin Nunnery is designed in the style of Tang Dynasty art, with buildings made entirely of cypress wood and joined together using mortise and tenon joints without a single nail. The layout of the nunnery is clear and distinct, with halls such as the Hall of Heavenly Kings and the Grand Hall, and four lotus ponds in the center. The Chi Lin Nunnery is already a famous attraction in Hong Kong, and it also attracts many Buddhist believers to come and worship.
Zhi Lian Jing Yuan, Nan Lian Yuan Chi just across the street, together with the Axe Hill Park, form a large complex of Tang-style architecture, creating a peaceful and tranquil paradise in the bustling city center.
In the same district, there is another religious building, Wong Tai Sin Temple, which has been listed as a first-class historical building in Hong Kong. It is worth visiting on the way!
Chung Yan Tung Sun Care Home in Diamond Hill, Hong Kong
In the bustling and towering metropolis of Hong Kong, there is a Buddhist pure land full of ancient charm - the Chi Lin Nunnery and Nan Lian Garden. This group of Tang-style buildings is located at the southern foot of Diamond Hill in Kowloon, and its creator is a Buddhist nun who is obsessed with Tang Dynasty art. She begged for alms from all directions and built it over the years. In 2012, it was included in the tentative list of World Heritage Sites announced by the National Cultural Heritage Administration, making it a unique flower in the Chinese architectural world.
Nan Lian Garden features a pond and a hill named after the Arhat, with pine trees as the main element and various peculiar rocks as the backdrop, creating the natural charm of mountains and forests pursued by Tang Dynasty. Tang Dynasty gardens emphasized the natural charm of mountains and forests, so the architectural style was relatively secondary, and the more important aspect was the landscape sequence composed of mountains, waters, flowers, trees, and pavilions. Hong Kong, China.
Chi Lin Nunnery
Chi Lin Nunnery is one of my favourites in Hong Kong. Been here thrice and still looking forward to visit it again. Inside the temple is a feeling of peace and quiet. You can solemnly pray here. The fond inside have a calming effect. Silence is being observed. This place is adjacent to Nan Lian Garden.
