Delving into the 'One Museum, Four Zones' of the Liwan Museum in Guangzhou (Part 4)
Today, we share the second exhibition area of the Liwan Museum — Xiguan Mansions. With the reconstructed Xiguan Mansion as the main building, it opened to the public in 2000. The exhibition partially recreates the typical pattern of traditional Xiguan Mansions and the living conditions and cultural landscape of Xiguan residences through household furnishings and situational displays.
Xiguan Mansions, prevalent in the Xiguan area of Guangzhou during the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China, are known for their tall entrance halls, exquisite architecture, and meticulous decorations. They are acclaimed as the 'jewel of Lingnan residential architecture culture.'
Xiguan Mansions are spacious and bright, combining halls with gardens, and are beautifully decorated. They are mostly brick-and-wood structures with blue brick bases and tall main doors inlaid with granite. The layout is based on the traditional central plains' main hall house form, generally extending in the depth direction, usually occupying a large area, rich in Xiguan characteristics, with architectural styles mostly Chinese. The basic structure includes a brick-and-wood framework, three sections, three gabled roofs, three bays on the front elevation, and a main door with a blue brick base and sliding lattice doors and stone door frames. Xiguan Mansions can also be seven sections deep, with living rooms, small halls, study rooms, and gardens inside, mainly built by compradors and merchants.
The features of Xiguan Mansions include: a 'three-sided pass' layout; the 'three-piece head' consisting of a foot door, sliding lattice door, and main door; hard mountain roofs; threshold windows; blue brick bases; granite streets; patios; Qingyun alleys; wooden staircases; various traditional Guangzhou decorations and carvings.
Entering a Xiguan Mansion, with over six meters of space height, there is no sense of oppression. Images 1-6 are of the side hall; images 7-10 are of the main hall; images 11-15 are of the dining hall; images 16-17 are of the study; images 18-20 are of the second floor and the rooftop.

Delve into the 'One Museum, Four Zones' of the Liwan Museum in Guangzhou (Part I)
Liwan Museum, established in December 1996, is the first district-level museum in Guangdong Province that mainly focuses on the collection, display, and research of Liwan's history, culture, and folklore. Through continuous development, the museum has formed a 'One Museum, Four Zones' distribution pattern, comprehensively showcasing the profound historical heritage and unique cultural charm of Liwan, the old city area of Guangzhou.
One Museum, Four Zones:
① The first zone is the former residence of Chen Lianzhong
② The second zone is the Xiguan Mansion
③ The third zone is the former residence of Jiang Guangnai
④ The fourth zone is the former residence of Chen Lianbo
Today, let's share the first exhibition zone. The museum building is the protected cultural heritage site of Chen Lianzhong's former residence, built in the early years of the Republic of China. It is a three-story brick and wood structure imitating European style, with arched doorways, European columns, and Chinese gardens that together create an architectural style where East meets West. It was opened to the public as a museum in 1996. The second floor of the building houses a collection of fine exhibits, displaying local cultural relics; the first floor is a temporary exhibition hall, regularly hosting historical and cultural exhibitions.

Wandering in the museum inside the Xiguan Mansions, it feels like traveling back in history
What was the first bus in Guangzhou like?
How many 'firsts' in the country were created by Guangzhou's manufacturing industry?
How luxurious were the restaurants in Guangzhou?
How prosperous were Guangzhou's trade and finance sectors?
....
Understanding the history of a city
helps to better understand its present.
Old Xiguan and Zhujiang New Town
Street stalls and upscale restaurants
Conservatism and innovation
Turns out, they have always been the tradition and heritage of Guangzhou.

One sentence: One Baoyuan Road, half of the history of Xiguan
📍Guangzhou | Baoyuan Road
📌One sentence: One Baoyuan Road, half of the history of Xiguan.
Compared with Yongqingfang, this place can represent Xiguan more. There are more than a dozen Xiguan mansions hidden on the short 500-meter road😲.
Here, you can see the Tantong door, carved glass windows and green brick stone feet everywhere👀.
If you want to understand Guangzhou and take the children to know the real Xiguan mansion, come here👉.
Now the entire Baoyuan Road, in addition to historical buildings, there are various restaurants and homestays.
The one that is well preserved in appearance is the Mingqin Mansion at No. 141. It is influenced by European culture and is one of the representatives of the combination of Chinese and Western in Xiguan mansions🤩.
From Baoyuan Road through Fengyuan Street, you can also go to Liwan Museum, Liwan Lake Park and Pantang Wuyue, to feel the unique humanistic atmosphere of old Guangzhou🎉

During the National Day holiday, I managed to take such cool photos at Yongqingfang
Guangzhou is still a popular destination for the National Day holiday! Although it's crowded, if you look carefully, you can still take beautiful photos away from the crowd! Let's take a deep walk in Liwan, Guangzhou together~
citywalk route: from Huangsha subway station B exit to Yongqingfang-Enning Road-Longjin West Road-Lizhiwan Park-Lizhiwan Grand Theater-Liwan Museum
Along the way, you can encounter many different small shops, and you can find interesting little things by casually strolling around~ Taking the subway + walking is the correct way to deeply explore Guangzhou!
🧾Sharing some photo-taking tips:
1⃣️You can dress in a Chinese style, many girls in Hanfu look good, and the photos are very impressive
2⃣️Prepare some props, you can buy fans, small lanterns, etc. on the road, which add fun to the photos, basically you can buy them for 10-20💰
3⃣️Even if there are many people, you can still take beautiful photos away from the crowd! Find angles, use coverings to block the crowd, be patient, if it doesn't work, blurring the people in the post-production also has a sense of atmosphere!

Xiguan, in the eyes of the old Guangzhou people, is the name of the area in the Liwan District, from the west to the west village, the south to the Pearl River, the east to the Renmin Road, and the west to the Xiaobei River. The ancient time refers to the west gate of Guangzhou City, which is now Zhongshan 6th Road and the junction of Zhongshan 7th Road and Renmin Road. The traditional old houses in this area are called "Xiguan Big House" by Guangzhou people. Most of these old houses have a long history and have witnessed the glory and vicissitudes of the city.
The old Xiguan area of Guangzhou is a good place to go back and not tired, sometimes it is directed at a bowl of burdock, sometimes for the little things of the ancient spirits, sometimes In order to feel the atmosphere... The old Xiguans excitement is as recorded in the literature: Guangzhou Xiguan, meat forest wine sea, no cold weather, no day and night.
